Kinda of a tradition in my family to gift everyone in the family a 119 ever since my mom and dad got each other one and I love mine, not as slippery as it feels but not the stickiest of handles by far. Use them all the time for butcher work hold a good edge and easy to sharpen and its cool to see when our whole family gets together butching a hog or beef that the 119 is either in everyone's hand or in their selection of knives to bring to the event i hope it never changes.

My 119 has really grown on me. It has become my primary sheath knife. It’s not so expensive and fancy that you don’t want to use it, yet it’s incredibly durable, versatile, and just a great knife for almost any task. You would think the handle would be slippery but even soaking wet it’s never slipped.

I actually gave my 119 away after using it for the last few years. Went for the $25 Gordon 119 copy from hobo freight. Durability tests prove it actually stays together better under hard use and the steel is better than bucks. It’s just a knife like the guy here says, not trying to be anything else. I just went to a slightly better one for half the price and the guy that got it had his day made. Hate away it’s not made in the USA, but eh, it’s just a knife, only a little tougher with better edge retention.

If you still want a buck but need better steel than 420HC cuz you use knives a lot and know how to sharpen them correctly buck offers S30V which is a better alloy by far.

If you want a real beast, and an indestructible one, check out the (stupidly) discontinued Buck 650 Nighthawk. One of the toughest blades you'll handle. 1/4" stabber and slicer. And as stated before, Buck stupidly discontinued it. I have a new found respect for Buck's 420HC. Larrin (of Magnacut fame) has showed in his toughness chart that 420HC is some of the toughest steel out there. So I don't need or want to spend half a paycheck on a tool when the old school steels - 1095, 5160, 154CM, 420HC and 440C work just fine.

Tip retention surprised me on this one. Every Buck I've ever owned had great edge retention, the tradeoff being that they were super brittle and prone to chipping/breaking. There's a piece of wood in a local state park that still has the tip of an old Buck I used to own buried in it somewhere. 😅

Yeah I never owned a Buck 110 because I didn’t like the brass bolsters and so I hadn’t really learned how good of a company they are. I would definitely like to get a 110 in synthetic scales.

Id do the old kukri trick and wrap the handle in either pin tar or the modern take and use grip tape. The slippery problem is fixed and you got a great knife.

Surprisingly, the handle isn’t bad when it’s “wet”. I’ve owned one for over 30 years and cleaned a lot of deer with mine. Mine also CD strike a farrow rod between the blade and the hand guard. But like I said, mine is old.
