You’ve got to decide that you’re going to cannibalize your existing business, and take a big risk, and deal with all of the new issues that arise when you try to push a new technology (and not get fired along the way). “It’s pretty hard.”
25:12 Recruiting and motivating the best people - must be a reasonably fun work environment, it’s a lot easier to be productive and focused if you’re interested in what you’re doing and you’re looking forward to it, versus if your mind is trying to escape and it feels like prison. Financial reward needs to be commensurate with the effort expended. If you see someone being rewarded for much less effort than you, then that’s de-motivating (CRT, affirmative action, Socialist/Neo-Marxist policies). Having a greater cause & vision that people can change the world is also a motivating factor. *For the most talented and driven people, it’s important that there be a larger purpose.*
33:38 Manufacturing / R&D innovation. Think of manufacturing as a technology problem, and not just like you’re going to make copies. Taking raw materials and getting them into the desired shape as efficiently as possible. It’s a very interesting puzzle as to how you do that, and there’s a huge amount of innovation that can be applied there (Toyota Production System is one example). You need to have a tight iteration loop between engineering and production in order to apply that innovation. That’s why Tesla has both departments closely physically located next to one another in Silicon Valley (pre-Austin, TX move).

Wouldn't it have been great getting a hand full of shares at that time?! I just recently started investing so I can't really kick myself in the ass for anything other than having not started investing sooner, but I guess starting at 27 years old is better than starting at 47!

Great interview and a lot of interesting insights in terms of certain technicals regarding overall financing as a hands on innovative founder and also the types of companies that offered services to new age tech , i learnt so much!!!!
