I know exactly what you mean with Rick Owens(high fashion). I really like his stuff overall but there are only a couple of items that I would really ever consider buying. I feel similar with John Varvatos.
I did 1/2 size up from brannock, I prefer a slightly looser fit. This is the same size I wear in New Balance and Common Projects and most sneakers. Side-comment, I've found the fit to be best if I don't use the top set of eyelits but YMMV. Hope that helps!
