      AFD seen as whole is actually not "far right". And most criticism is not "hate".
      I'm very much on the left myself, and I think it's important that especially our side does not mislabel anything. It only breeds confusion, negativity and aggression - because no one likes to be misunderstood. For example, how would anyone on the left feel about being called a "communistst" all the time, no matter what we talked about?
      Hainbach - your intentions are clearly good, but please don't use the wrong words, terms and labels. Because so many other artists and creative people do, and it's so destructive for important societal debates.

    Its strange for me as a person from the other side of the world, to hear Germans speak negatively about avant-garde music, saying it has nothing to do with the national heritage etc when, again from the other side of the world, Germany is totally identified with avant-garde and experimental music and art. To us, this music and art is EXTREMELY German.

That's mainly due to how music was publically funded and also how the academic study of music was established. All the German speaking microstates started to establish research Universities after Prussia had done so in Berlin and Bonn and started to compete by adding new departments. As a result you got the first departments of music and then to keep up more of them started to pop up. But you are right in that the Nazis opposed these styles of music as well, anything that came after the late Romantic period, really (and that's the same for other types of art as well).

      Indeed, even sticking to the late 20th century German avant-garde was extremely influential on an enormous amount of new music styles.
      If you listen to interviews or documentaries about virtually any band from the UK from the 70s or 80s doing something new, there’s almost inevitably a moment where they say the moment their understanding of music change was something like “I heard Kraftwerk for the first time on the radio, and that took me to Can/Faust/Stockhausen/etc.”

    It's a sad form of irony given how instrumental Germanic composers were in the development of early synthesizers and electronic music. To minimalize their musical history to forms of folk, as great as that genre of music may be in its own right, is a disservice to their own country's advancements
    Quite an awesome piece you made in response, I'm glad that in the end you were able to share at least one nice, human moment through it. Very strong statement behind it and I'm glad that someone said it. It's sad to see large groups hold such strong, visceral, and influential opinions over an increasing amount of seemingly non-disruptive "issues" (as if a musical festival could even be labeled as such)

      I was going to say that the actions of the AfD bear a horrible resemblance to the Entartete Kunst ("degenerate art") activities of the 1930s. The irony is that this period virtually wiped out all native German culture up to that point, and a "new" German culture had to be constructed from the ashes of WW2. This rebuild led directly to the avant-garde and electronic music of Can, Neu, Tangerine Dream etc. that we, outside of Germany, so admire to this day! Art and music need to be presented and tested before the public without fear, and if it becomes "niche" - well, so be it. After all, the critics rushed to criticize Mozart, Bach, Beethoven etc. as they were creating their greatest works.

You don't have to enjoy it to accept that it is music

      You don't have to make it explicitly political, obviously, but just like any form of art, it is mere communication from an artist to a consumer via a medium. And they can chose whatever it is they want to communicate and in whatever shape and form.

    A neighboring state was awarding musicians for their composition. My college professor was asked to be a judge. As he spent time with the organizers, he started asking questions about their program.
    In the 80s, their state had a 5 million dollar taxpayer funder budget for music. Each year, they handed out $50,000 in grants and awards to musicians. $50,000 of the $5,000,000 budget was given to musicians. Where did the other 99% go?
    After that point, he became an advocate against the NEA and various state sponsored music programs.
    It is interesting to hear that in your story, once the state no longer sponsored the festival - private industry took its place to keep the festival going. ...and the love of the community to support the festival directly shows its true worth. That is very likely the way it should be.

    Music is "the most unpolitical art form"? Has whoever said that ever actually heard of music before...?

    • @drpibisback7680
      @drpibisback7680 3 роки тому +12

      Calling any artform non-political smacks of complete ignorance. Art is inherently political because (among loads of other reasons) many political ideologies are anti-art. Self-expression is a challenge to fascism because fascists believe self-expression is a defect to be stamped out.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 3 роки тому +5

      @@drpibisback7680 There have been studies on this to examine it more closely. Researchers identified five "moral foundations" people have... and the results varied quite a bit with political affiliation. Specifically, the studies found that people on the left place very high value on:
      A. Fairness (integrity, justice, proportionality)
      B. Caring (empathy, doing no harm)
      People on the right also value these things, but to a lesser extent. Instead, people on the right (especially far right) placed a higher priority on:
      C. Ingroup loyalty
      D. Obedience to authority
      E. Purity (order, cleanliness, disgust toward differences and disorder)
      The researchers considered these last three to be good things, and concluded or at least hinted that people on the right are more ethical because they have more values. However, traits C+D+E add up to a strongly conformist value system which considers uniqueness and self-expression to be defects. It's basically the core of what enables fascism.
      If you're interested in more detail, look up Moral Foundations Theory. It's a fascinating look at humanity.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 3 роки тому +1

      @ The Pack Rat Basically, while moving from left to right on the political spectrum, the studies found that the weight of A and B decreased and C, D, and E increased.
      There was a point in-between where the lines crossed, but that doesn't mean it's an optimal balance. Being half-caring and half-fascist is better than being entirely fascist, but it's still not great.
      FWIW, the intersection point was near the right edge of the graph. The vast majority of the population scores higher on A and B than on the other traits... and basically only criminals, psychopaths, and right-wing authoritarians scored higher on C, D, and E.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 3 роки тому

      As for self-expression vs fascism, there were other studies which looked at right-wing authoritarianism and found some curious results... Like, after establishing a given trait as bad or undesirable, a study asked people how much of that trait a person should ideally have -- less than average, an average amount, or more than average.
      Almost everyone answered "less than average", of course... but people with right-wing authoritarian traits answered "an average amount". Like, they didn't care if it was bad... they just cared if it was common. They recognized that they had that trait, and wanted to believe everyone else did too. They needed to believe they were normal.
      This is probably a big part of why the far right spends so much effort saying everyone else is "equally bad". And why the previous president cared so much about crowd sizes. And why, when no one agrees with them, they call themselves "the silent majority". And why that one lady calls herself "One Million Moms" even though it's just one person and a few twitter followers. They call people "sheep", but yet are very deeply uncomfortable with being different, and are obsessed with being part of a flock.
      Meanwhile, the rest of the population views uniqueness and self-expression as good things.
      In any case, one key finding from the study was that, when dealing with an extremist of that sort, it's pointless to argue that what they're doing is wrong. They probably are well aware of that, and just don't care. Instead, it's more effective to show them that they're alone, that what they're doing is weird or aberrant.
      So Hainbach's destruction tapes, and the widespread positive response to it, are a great answer. It may seem a bit like public ridicule, but it speaks their language. It hits on a level much deeper than any rational or empirical argument ever could.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 3 роки тому

      @ The Pack Rat Left-wing authoritarians are too rare to really measure.
      However, the moral foundations researchers later added a sixth trait called "liberty", because Libertarians were upset about being lumped in with other conservatives.
      So there are a couple more categories on the spectrum... there are conservatives who value liberty above everything else, and they're usually called Libertarians. They tend to vote the same as other conservatives, but for different reasons.
      There are also progressives who value liberty above everything else, and they're usually called anarchists. They tend to vote differently, and often support right-wing policies for much the same reasons as Libertarians do.

    What an absolutely haunting project. It is absurd to me that the reaction to avant-garde works has been roughly unchanged for, what, 200 years? Every time a different voice emerges there is always a reaction of 'this is no longer art'. Now, I understand that not everyone likes the same things, there are people who like old art and there are people who like new art, but time and time again progressive and avant-garde artists have been painted as the death of art. Then there's also the aspect of protest in art. This political party is presenting this festival as if all art before has been compliant with the status quo. Protest against and critique of a (let's say) ruling class in music has been going on for centuries. I understand your apprehension to go to this festival, given that these people are quite vocal about their disgust for music they deem un-musical, but it must feel great to have been able to show a work like this in an environment like that. Over the years, the magnetic compound on audiotape becomes brittle and begins to rub off the tape just with the friction of the playback heads and other machinery. This destroys it much like your knives. We went to great lengths to prevent and restore the integrity of the tape. We even went so far as baking reels of tape in an oven. Sometimes we only had one chance to save the material as it may disintegrate before a second. To see the process that we worked so hard against being used in such a beautiful and cathartic way fills me with joy. Thank you.

    Congratulations on delivering such a great response to the AfD's attacks. This is an incredibly powerful artwork. Claiming art is apolitical just shows immense ignorance - art does not exist in a vacuum, it exists in a social context - challenging and questioning that context has been a core part of art since postmodernism, at the very least. Resisting criticism of one's own ideology and blindly following reactionary rhetoric can lead to a very dangerous path.

    On the street there's more people than we think willing to fight fascism. Constitutional representation is what makes them seem more in numbers and power. Keep up the good fight and don't give them an inch of public space. ✊
