    IDK If it helps or not but I just got an Electrolux Epic 3500SR. Seller claimed it was dead and didn't turn on. Turns out the hot wire to the on/off switch inside the handle had come unplugged. Plugged it back in, good as new. A vacuum will never just "not turn on" with dead silence. It will hum, or screech, or smoke, or blow your circuit breaker. If it turns on and you hear nothing but silence, it's going to be a wire connection issue. D.I.Y. Dan might have nicked the wires in the cord and didn't know it before taping it up and torn the strands and it's only making a connection when the wire is bent a certain way.
    People in the USA usually don't maintain their vacuums and treat them with no maintenance until they die.

    There is almost definitely a loose wire or bad switch somewhere. These are beasts, I don’t want to know what this poor machine has gone through if the motor is burned out.

  • @Aleroluver
    @Aleroluver 6 років тому

    And I've never seen one here in the US with screws in the bottom plate! By the way, yours is in amazing cosmetic shape for a self propelled machine, they got horribly smashed into things and most of them bear many battle scars, yours is mint minus the cord, and that's a miracle because it looks to have seen a fair amount of use from the looks of the sole plate...

    That Hoover is beautiful! I have one very similar, except mine does not have the headlight or cord reel, and is Grayish-blue instead of Burgundy. The agitator brushes on yours are very sound, and have years of life left in them. The bottom plate was held in place by the two spring clips and a little friction (no screws required.) I hope you are able to resolve the motor issues with it, because it really is a fine cleaner.

    It was made in May 91 as mine was except mine was light blue. Don't use the powersurge often as the little finger cap can come off of the switch.

    If I remember correctly the handle needs to be pushed down to lock the switch into the non self propelled position. The odd sound that it made for the moment that the motor started could be a shroud touching the motor. It happened to some of them.

    I had my Concept 1 when the Concept 2 came out. I think that you'd find the successor Powermax Supreme Upright which had regular onboard tools. I know that if I returned to synthetic rugs I'd look for one since I liked my Concept 1 so much.

    That's a shame the machine is DOA. It is likely related to the damaged cord. There could be a short inside the machine near the cord reel, or when the cord was ran over, it dug deep into the insulation and nicked one of the lead wires. If I remember correctly, many Concepts sound quite rough, as the motors tend to have deteriorated quite quickly in these.

    Hi Roger. I have in my collection the Concept II version of this machine, which incorporates the little hand-held cleaner on the front of the machine. I also have an electronic version of the service manual for this machine, which I used to help me when I was restoring mine. It's full of diagrams and very useful information. Let me know if you'd like me to send it to you.

    Very sorry the vac doesn't work Roger :( These were common in the 80's. Bought my mum one at a garage sale. Worked great until my sister rode it across the living room and smashed it into the hearth! Sure its just your cord that needs replacing. And taking it out of drive, the handle should be in about the middle of travel before the lever will engage

    Hi Roger - I am new to vacuums but could you tell me what DAMS are? Someone on Vacuumland has posted his huge collection of Hoover vacuums and one group is called DAMS. But what are they?

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 років тому +1

      DAMS is an abbreviation for Dial a Matic, a hard bag clean air upright cleaner with a socket at the back to plug in a hose and tools. In the UK it was knows as the Convertible.

  • @Aleroluver
    @Aleroluver 6 років тому

    Hi Roger... Your American accent is nearly as bad as my attempt at a British one is :). Very funny... Anyway I love your channel and I'm very sorry this didn't work, I know how disappointing that is. The power drive Concept 1 was the first vacuum I collected and it was a slippery slope from there. I had a similar issue with mine and a friend's father cleaned the carbon brushes for me and it started working again... But I don't know much about repairing electrical and motor issues... With the self propelled handle , in order to get it turned off, the handle has to be in a certain place so that the switch will slide into a slot that locks it into position, likely somewhere near the middle of its travel... Try pushing the switch toward the off position while moving the handle up and down until you feel it slide into the slot that locks it... Good luck with the repair, looking forward to seeing it once you get it fixed!!
