As a matter of fact, Andy used some songs last year including Don't Start Now, Blinding Lights & Everything I wanted, but can we appreciated the video editing, the transactions and some songs he used in the mashup such as More by KDA, Astronomia (The Coffin Dance), Gurenge (Demon Slayer) by LiSA, and some K-pops.. I think he does it by what songs are popular, not necessarily when they were released. In 2018 he used a queen song (for the bohemian rhapsody movie). Hamilton came out in 2016 and yet it was used in this.
Songs like Dont Start Now, Blinding Lights, Everything I Wanted, Watermelon Sugar, etc. were released late last year and we can’t predict how big they’ll be. So, we try to use them in the year they come out in case they’re not popular in the following year so there’s not as much pressure to use them when there are other options. And if the song ends up being popular (like the examples given), then they get used in both years 😊

edit: just finished. well first of all...my kpop multistan heart has been majorly blessed. that’s aside the point...this made me have a huge realization of the impact this year has had on everyone (and everything) i legit started crying while just thinking “damn this year has been a lot”. i’m legit lose for words just remember all the stuff that happened. it started out so normal and went to shit before our eyes. i hope 2021 will be better it most likely won’t but it’s best to still have some type of hope. this was definitely worth the wait.

So, we try to use them in the year they come out in case they’re not popular in the following year so there’s not as much pressure to use them when there are other options. And if the song ends up being popular (like the examples given), then they get used in both years 😊
