Walter Sales was a kid that used to play with Paiva’s kids. He went to that house many times when he was a child.
This masterpiece provokes sensorial experience which I never had before and I’m 62!
I'm brazilian, I watched the movie, I cried at the very moment it ended.
I was only a child when Paiva was taken, when dictatorship was ruling my country, and I didn't know what was going on around me, and of course no adult would say anything about it, and the truth was not told either on newspapers or on TV.
As long as I grew up, I began to understand a lot of stuff that had happened by that time, mainly when our democracy was restored.
But there was a price to pay to get democracy back: an amnesty law was aproved so that those military who had tortured and killed people could not be punished for what they had done.
Regarding to the amazing Fernanda's performance on this film, of course we, brazilians, knew how good her acting is, no surprise at all; what we were not expecting was her "coming back" to drama, for she got famous in Brasil for her roles on TV comedy sitcoms and series for a long time.
The one who had become famous and highly respected for her roles on drama stories was her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, considered by us as our greatest actress, one of our best actresses ever.
It seems that, as you use to say in English, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"...
This film was not nominated for any other categories because it was released in the cinema at the end of November, many voters did not have time to watch it during the voting period for the nominees, it was really lucky to have been nominated for the Golden Globe and Oscar, Im Still Hera is a dark horse in the race, but it could win the Oscar because it is truly a masterpiece!
Watched it on Friday here in Austin and to my surprise the screening room was actually full. After the movie ended, everyone just sat there kinda still digesting the story. I really loved it, Fernanda Torres really is a fantastic actress. She needs that Oscar. I also read that they filmed the movie chronologically, which made the cast’s emotions more realistic since they were all developing together with the story.
The same happened here in Brazil when I watched it. Everyone was just sitting still, not saying a word, just processing everything, some crying their hearts out (aka me). I've never seen that happen tbh usually people start getting up or talking as soon as credits start rolling, but this wasn't the case
Thanks a lot for you joining us for Fernanda Torres.
You até Super 👏👏👏👏👏
Sue tomorrow is my day off and I was planning on staying home and being lazy. I think you may have convinced me. I probably will go tomorrow
Just go... you won't regret!
This is an awesome experience... And is even more creeping when we discover it was also a consequence of Cold War!
Nos conte o que achou
Thanks a lot for you joining us. A good fun for you tomorrow 👏👏👏👏👏
Next week I'm going to try my best to see this movie. I have an intuitive feeling this movie will live up to all the hype.
Hope you like it.
I love your first sentences on this, it reminded of my own reaction coming out of the session!!!
I'm Still Here does a great job on balancing great technique, engaging actors and timely messages.
This film deserves all the awards, it would be very important for us Brazilians if she won as an actress, winning the award that her mother lost in 1999 (the first Brazilian actress to be nominated for an Oscar).
Remembering that the person who played Eunice Paiva in her old age was Fernanda Torres' own mother. The wonderful Fernanda Montenegro.
Thank you for your sensitive review.❤️
As a true story, Walter Salles - who met the family in the 70s - wanted to be faithful to Eunice legacy and tell her story until the end.
And more than that, the parallels of Eunice’s life and the times we are living are remarkable.
After all her the fight for democracy and human rights, she started to loose her memory at the same time Brazil (and I dare to say - the world) was forgetting how is life under an authoritarian regime.
Above all, this is a film about memory and endurance through life.
So glad that you enjoyed the film, Sue. I also did not know that it was based on a true story.
The thing about the epilogues is that this movie is actually based on a memoir written by Marcelo, the son of Rubens and Eunice. Unlike the film, the book does not focus solely on those fateful days in 1971; rather, it covers the family's history from its beginnings all the way to Eunice's later years, when she was elderly and suffering from Alzheimer's. I believe the screenwriters made the right choice in narrowing the focus to that brief yet defining period-encompassing the family's life in Rio, Rubens' disappearance, and its immediate aftermath. However, since this is a biopic, it was important to acknowledge that Eunice went on to have a brilliant career as a lawyer and a dedicated activist for Indigenous rights.
In the first epilogue, we see her finally obtaining Rubens' death certificate after 25 years of battling bureaucracy. This moment is significant because it marks the Brazilian State’s official recognition of its crime and provides some sense of closure for Eunice and her family.
In the second epilogue, we see her as an Alzheimer's patient, which is a central part of the book. This scene is particularly moving because it captures a fleeting moment of clarity-when she recognizes a picture of Rubens on TV, at a time when Brazil was beginning to investigate the crimes committed by the dictatorship. We also witness her lasting legacy: her large, loving family and grandchildren running around, much like her own children did back in Rio. And, as the perfect final touch, we get Fernanda Montenegro portraying older Eunice, bringing theaters to tears without uttering a single word.
Amazing! I’m Brazilian collector and I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and I’m very happy that you’re talking about I’m Still Here! ❤ Soo proud 🙏🏻✨thank you
We still here ❤❤❤
I too 👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome review! ❤
When a film tells a powerful and absolutely human story about reality and brings out our genuine emotions and feelings, it's ABSOLUTE CINEMA! 🎬📽🎞🇧🇷
Very grateful that the world is finally giving Fernanda Torres the recognition she deserves. Here in Brazil she has always been loved, celebrated and respected for her talent, her charisma and her irreverent and passionate personality. And her mother, the goddess Fernanda Montenegro, is basically idolized, one of the greatest of our stars, of immeasurable talent and a Lady of impeccable class, education and integrity, that no one in their right mind dares to criticize.
incredible performance by fernanda torres in i'm still here
Well, let me just add a little more context here: All of of the songs that the family listens in the house are from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop period. On the other hand, the songs that were being played on the radios were popular songs as well, but from artists that were complict with (therefore allowed by) the regime. When the military agents took Rubens away for good, you can actually see them looking at their vinyl collection and books... they were actually looking for content that could be considered subversive, communist or whatever.
The movie shows that Eunice Paiva graduated in Law School when she was 48 years old. In her work as a lawyer, she dedicated herself to the indigenous peoples issues and acted mostly against the violence and undue expropriation of land suffered by the indigenous population. That's the kind of fight that nobody wanted to take back in the day (maybe not even today). It is partially because of her work decades ago that today we have a wider area of well preserved amazon forest for instance.
The helicopter that flies by them at the beach also tells us a lot. Those choppers were used to drop bodies at the sea. Sometimes they dropped not only dead bodies, but living people in chains. The country only found about that a few decades later. You kind of have to be Brazilian to understand that. The sound of the chopper actually gave me a little despair feeling in the theater whereas the characters in the movie expressed no feeling (cuz they had no idea at the time).
Brazil inaugurated a statue in honor of Congressman Rubens Paiva a few years ago. Our former president Bolsonaro (Trump wannabe) actually spat at the statue and then said to reporters and to whomever was around that Rubens deserved to die. Oh yeah... and he did all that IN FRONT OF his family on the very inauguration day. .. Yep, he's that disgusting (even though it seems like I'm far from you telling enough).
In fact, there's so much more information that I could add here that it seems like it's not even fair to non-Brazilians to watch the movie without them. Of course, It is a good movie. But it's much better when you understand everything that surrounds that family in that period. It feels like presenting Van Gogh to a blind man, or jazz to a deaf man...
Anyway, I hope I can help a little.
Foi perfeito!
Fernada deserves the oscar. She's brilliant.
I just loved your review! Thank you so much!
❤❤❤
I agree one of the best films of the year. I want a criterion 4k.🎉
But the actress that doesn't need to say a word for us to know her feelings, sitting in a chair, is not Fernanda Torres. It is her mother, Fernanda Montenegro.
She was referring to the ice cream shop scene.
It’s trully incredible that Fernanda Montenegro, mother of Fernanda Torres, is now 95 years old and plays Torres’ character in the final scene. Montenegro was the first brazilian actress to be nominated to an Oscar back in 1999, and now Torres gets her own so well deserved nomination.
I believe she gives the best female performance of the year, but, even if she loses the Oscar to the also deserving Demi Moore or Mikey Madison, “I’m still here” has to win international feature film over “Emilia Pérez”.
Eu sou brasileira. Ela merece o Oscar.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's funny that the one thing you didn’t quite like-the moment when you thought the movie was going to end, but it didn’t-actually represents the title of the movie. I'm Still Here. We are still here. Every time we thought we would get closure, every time we expected justice for what happened, every time we believed it would finally end-it didn’t. Everybody knows what they did at the time, and nothing...
I love your review!! I am going to watch it tonight with a group of about 40 people in our local theater, and I can't wait! Fingers crossed for Best International Film and for the FANTASTIC Fernanda Torres. I agree with you. How all other awards missed this performance except for the Globes and the Oscats?!?!!!
We Brazilians know who Fernanda Torres is and her extraordinary talent, now it's time for the world to get to know this beloved and super talented actress. She deserves this Oscar!❤❤❤❤❤
It's just one end. The film is about Eunice, Marcelo wrote the book when she was diagnose with Alzheimer. She fought for her family, she became a lawyer and fought for human rights and indigenous people and, at the end of the movie, you see old Eunice with her family like you saw at the begining. Thanks for your review, I loved it.
Great film, Fernanda is an amazing actress, much beloved in Brazil. Both deserve the Oscar!
5:43 Inside Story: I just happened to watch this movie very late so I got unnecessary spoilers. Then I thought the whole charm might be all gone... But oh no, when I sat there I let the movie carry me and (with all due respect) this thing of 3 endings and bits dragging for me just didn't happened at all. When the "middle" was ending, my only concern was: Will I be able to review this without crying? I was blown away with every fiber of my heart.
TRUE
@Andre92754 yeah baby 🥲
"I'm Still Here" is a film of the purest and most wonderful art, with the talented actress Fernanda Torres delivering an exceptional performance. She’s so incredible that she can act on two fronts: one shows a whole universe of hidden suffering, reflected in her eyes - faithful witnesses to the terrible pain of her family drama - while, at the same time, through her lips and smiles, she creates a reality based on positivity and the strength of a mother who must keep fighting for her children’s happiness.
This is a family story, with moments of joy and also of sadness. This film could’ve been signed by any painting master, like Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky, or Monet, because it’s a beautiful and inspiring work of art that tells a human story of pain, overcoming, and a whole lot of love, taking the viewer to the edge of emotion.
Thank you for the video and for the comments. The movie is really amazing and Fernanda’s performance is incredible. The 1st book from Marcelo (the one he autographed in the screen) is called “Happy Old Year”, and talks about his accident and “recovery “.
Well you just sold me. I’ll be watching it maybe tomorrow!
Go for it and you won't regret any minute!
I can’t wait to see this it looks great
Great review❤
Thank you very much for your analysis!!
Enjoyed your review, thank you. 🙏🏼
We're still here 💛💚💛💚
Fernanda Torres is a phenomenal 😍👏🏼👏🏼✨✨✨
Thanks a lot ❤🇧🇷
It's not so much a nitpick, but a simple consequence of you being a foreigner, which means not super familiar with stuff going on here in Brazil. Many, and I mean MANY youtube reviewers said similar things, so I'm here to explain.
The death certificate scene was a certificate "in absentia" because it had been 25 years since nobody had heard of him. A journalist asks her if the State does not have more pressing issues than revisiting the past, and she says "no." Given how many people tried to silence this story (And this film) she was correct.
Then, in 2014 she is watching the National Truth Commission, that publicised the archives of the dictatorship and took testimonies of surviors and publicised the brutality and the crimes of the regime. That's when we all learned that Rubens died because he did not resist the torture to which he was subjected. It's okay that you didn't catch that detail, but WE knew what was going on.
Thanks for that ❤
Ooo thanks for your review ❤ i think she was not nominated everywhere because people outside Brazil didn't see the movie . And she is at Oscar because of the L.A fires and the prorrogation of the votation, it has to be!!!
Loved your review! One important thing to say is: the movie goes on until 2014 because that's the year when Brazilian government finally investigated and made an official report about the human rights violations during our military dictatorship. In that time many people that were killed and disappeared by government officials were given justice and tributes, Rubens Paiva (Eunice's husband) being one of them. In honor of his fight for democracy, a bust was inaugurated at the government headquarters.
Thanks!!! 👏👏👏
Thank you for your great review. During these times of neofascism in the rise, we need to make this movie trend like Parasyte did a few years ago, not only because Torres and everyone else deserves it, but because it is a powerful warning.
I just saw this movie over the weekend too, and I'm with your view 500%. it's a must see for everyone, Fernanda Torres wins it all I hope. Also a little trivia - the actress that plays old Eunice is Fernanda Montenegro - mother of Fernanda Torres.
She makes everybody cry without dropping a tear. This movie is a masterpiece 💯
I loved a lot of things about the film, and one of them is how the actors don't look like movie stars performing in a slightly fake way, with their artificial faces. In "I'm Still Here" they seem like normal people we can identify with. I miss this not only in the cinema, but on social media as well.
And I loved the entire cast, even the dog, but it's undeniable that Fernanda's performance stood out for being so believable, complex and amazing. I hope she and the film win the oscars in the categories they were nominated, as they deserve it! ♥️✨
I watched the movie yesterday and OMG. Fernanda Torres! What an incredible actress, in my opinion, the best performance of the year. She doesn’t need to say a single word to convey emotion. She is unbelievable.
Thank you for your review ❤
Sue your analysis is brilhant, i loved it. Very the best Review 👏👏👏👏👏.
You were Super!!!!
Have a great Monday and week everyone, from Tampa Florida. #MoviesandSue #MaMaBluRay Had not heard about this movie, but I'm my defense. I've been working a lot lately.
Thank you for your review 💚🇧🇷🇧🇷🙌
Por que choras, Le Monde? Why do you cry, Le Monde?
Masterpiece!
Thanks! you capture the emotion the movie provoques in audience here in Brasil.
Perfect Review.Thanks !!!!

Superb Review !
Amazing review, there is a Movie and a book about the author and one of the kids (Marcelo) from this devastated family, (feliz ano velho - (Happy old year).
Bravo!
Thank you very much, from Brazil
Viva Fernanda!!!❤

Greetings from BRAZIL🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
This film is a masterpiece!!
I'm still here is a must see. Fernanda Torres is outstanding in it.
Great screenplay, compelling story. While Fernanda Torres did not quite live up to the hype I’ve heard on line I love the ensemble cast (they really felt like a family). Oh, and the subtitles didn’t detract from the experience. So glad you also were moved.
GREAT REVIEW! Fernanda had the best performance this season, without a doubt. With all due respect to the other incredible actresses, but the way Torres plays Eunice Paiva makes us realize how powerful a performance can really be. Her delivery is subtle, quiet, not exaggerated. She shows us exactly how mothers react in tragic situations, where they need to gather strength to care for their children, while fighting for justice, without being able to scream. I think "I'm Still Here" is much more than a masterpiece. It is a powerful document of a dark moment in Brazil's recent history.
🥳🇧🇷🏆
The movie jumping those decades, and the information that those parts at the end convey are entirely pivotal to Eunice Paiva as an iconic activist for indigenous rights, and the future of the Paiva family. By no means could the film have been shorter - in fact, I'd throw in AT LEAST another extra 20 minutes (I'm being very, very conservative here) because far too many details were left out. Not that they'd be spelled out, as subtlety is dominant in this movie, it would be at least 20 minutes of subtle nods to events that were happening at the time.
Surely this would have destroyed the brainwashed imperialist-"patriots'" reasons to watch the film, which also comprises most of the voters in the academy, such as the fact that the dictatorship was very directly backed by the US, and that even before the coup of '64 happened, JFK, the "peaceful" president, had greenlit the interventions and back up for the coup. It's a shame he was mercifully assassinated, he should've rotted in jail for the rest of his life for his war crimes, same as his predecessors and successors. As the title of a book says, we linger on the scourge of the "Open Veins of Latin America", caused by these loathsome individuals and their puppets. Family members disappearing is something that still happens all across the continent because of it, and Eunice, as shown after the first time jump, was a fierce fighter against the very things that are destroying the planet, because of the global north's ever-the-more-fascist agenda. She actively advocated for the people who protected our forests and are, to this day, dying at the hands of those who lick the boots of these despots, and gathered many, many enemies in this journey. And yet, she was still there.
Perfect.
