imagine you have one 10 stars character and you obtain a character which you want to add in your line up, but you don't have the materials to upgrade that new character. Revert means, stripping off the materials in that 10 stars character and making it a default one (not upgraded character) thus obtaining the materials used in that character, so you can use the materials in the new character. Rebirth is just another term for upgrade to another star
