From manor house station to badge in hand , 3 years 1 month and 17 days. Went 3 all on 28s and 21s. Did it the wizzan way and took a chance and did map test with 1000 points. Thought sod it let's just get into the system. It's a game you gotta play. Try and enjoy it, and dont ever stop calling a book a day. Good luck all

3 years 8 months for me .. never put back.. straight c’s.... 3-1 56’s 3-1 28’s 3-3 21’s nervous as hell on the last 21 appearance said to myself there is no way I’m coming out of here without this .. took my time and got a ...B .. and hand shake with Mr Wilkins.. Been out 12 years now.. Ps the suburban is no pushover folks
Great video Tom! My Favorite of yours so far... It's a time line I've thought about for some time ive put off doing but, you have broken it down perfect for me...thank you. Keep the vids coming buddy.👍
I i’m always surprised to discover that there is no retesting at all - all one has to do is to keep up payments for the ticket. So, you could actually be off the road for, say 10 years, go back and things have changed so much that would be very lost.
Best thing is to not put a date on it. However one can't be on it forever either, one has to be realistic when enough is enough. Went 3-3 2nd time round, both on 56s and 21s. I swore to myself that on both occasions if I got sent back that would be my lot. Fortunately both times in this situation I scored to progress, so maybe it was meant to be. Being in that situation on 21s, the pressure was absolutely insane. Was feeling right sorry for myself, that the rest of my life could be shaped in just 20 minutes forever.
What is the 56s and 21s I’m starting mine just now haven’t got a clue what’s going on can someone tell me what I have to buy please like size of engine bike maps and books if your bit busy thanks.
Hey Modular Curiousity, WizAnn is a knowledge school, that provide facilities and materials to complete The Knowledge. Going out pointing, is the process of see points of interest in real life, then correlating them with your map so you know exactly where they sit geographically 👍🏻
Wizan - one of the taxi schools, they have their preferred method of memorising runs and points. Pointing - memorising points of interest Appearances - Face to face exams where they quiz you on the fastest route between points The appearances are 56 days apart to start with. You get points for doing well in the exams. After a certain number of points you do quizzes every 28 days. Get enough points in those you do quizzes every 21 days. I think 3 3's means you've got 3 C's (the worst passing grade) on the first level of the appearances (where they're 56 days apart). You need to get 4 C's in a row to get to the second level where the appearances are closer together.
Another excellent presentation, Tom. Concerning the time taken to do the Knowledge some students must have more natural ability to encode and retrieve this sort of information and therefore do the run learning more rapidly and score more often at appearances. All else being equal they are more likely to pass within a timespan before which they feel they have to give up. Do you think that there is a wide range of ability and if so is there any way of assessing relatively early on whether a student has the necessary ability to pass within a reasonable time frame (apart from the voluntary test)? It seems a reasonable question because the drop out rate is so high.
adapt andsucceed I believe it’s largely down to how consistent you are. Some people start well and fall off the wagon, some people start slowly and then gradually buck their ideas up. The common pattern I believe is consistency, there’s going to be set backs and life will get in the way but you have to continue being consistent. Like a good diet, finances, or fitness. You don’t achieve results by going hard on the first day, constant every day action gets you there. If you walk consistently in the correct direction, you will eventually reach your destination.
Tom Hutley Thanks, Tom, some ancient wisdom there! I had in mind that there are some people who seem much less able to relate the location of one place to another and there is a condition known as dyspraxia which is concerned with organising information in working memory. This condition can apply in different situations and must be a continuum. From what you say the environment is more important than the genes (although there must be a genetic component to being persistent and consistent too!). By the way, I like the fact that your advice is so goal-focussed e.g. it doesn’t matter what you know, it’s what you can demonstrate that you know in the appearance and practice for that (a bit like the difference between taking football penalties in training and in a match situation).
adapt andsucceed ultimately the relation of one place to another is the crux of the knowledge, and studies have shown that as people progress through the knowledge, their hippocampus grows, the area reserved for laying down and consolidating new memories.

Late comment, but this reminds me of the university. They said parental students were effective. When “normal” students could postpone things, parental students had to focus on the time they had to study. They got discipline in a way.
Hi Tom love all your videos. Married with 2 kids and will have to do knowledge in a car due to distance. Thinking of doing 12-16 runs a week in the car, 5am start then once Ive done them all was thinking of getting a job with Addison Lee so I can continue pointing early morning then working rest of the day. Hopefully can learn a bit whilst driving for AL, what are your thoughts? All the best mate

Very good video from Tom...................the thing that will kill it for many candidates , is finances , family commitments , work commitments , age and stamina ..................if you haven't got a bucket load of your own personal time and money to throw at this , then you're gonna be on one leg with your arm tied behind your back before you've even found Manor House station. With utmost respect to Tom , he is a relatively young man and might not yet be anchored down with a lot of the above , if he is then all credit to you Tom , however the older you get the harder it will be both physically and mentally...................... if that doesn't put you off....................then Good Luck . :)
@@TomtheTaxiDriver As I clearly stated and gave you credit for , it's a realism that people need to be aware of ................I'm not digging you out , yours films are very informative , however not everybody's personal circumstances will leave them able to get their badge. originalpickaxe it is definitely worth assessing the hurdles that are likely to come up so when they do, you know if you can or can’t. Budget was a big one for me, working again minimum wage, I had to keep a car and motorbike running and put fuel in it 3 times a week, doing approx 350-400 miles in that week. Once the essentials are covered, be it a schedule that covers the kids, etc it really comes down to how much you want it. Some might look at my situation and say it’s an easier ride than others but ultimately still takes the work. Like someone running a marathon in 3 hours or 5 hours. Both are gruelling experiences, but both achieve the required result. When I started my forecast my journey to take 6-7 years as a worse case scenario, I wanted the badge so badly, I wasn’t going to let anything hold it back.
originalpickaxe I don’t think there’s any blame being attached to anyone deciding not to do the Knowledge or taking longer than anyone else. It depends on the preferences and priorities of each of us within our own situations. Ultimately it’s our own lives and we’re answerable only to ourselves. If (you think) it’s a choice between staying married and doing the knowledge the choice is yours - which would you regret losing more? I would add, though, that often we’re capable of more in life than we think, sometimes with a little bit of support.
Learning something as hard as this by memory seems abit old fashond now tho, that we have better technology that we dont need to kno everything by memory now.
Hi Tom what's the quickest it can be done or the quickest it's been done. Just out of interest? Can it done in under 2 years. I've heard stories of people doing it in Under 9 months is this true?
Dave Barrett I explain it in the video Dave. Years ago in the 70’s, people could knock it out in a year. Now because of the appearances and how long it takes to run your runs 2 years is the absolute minimum, and that is if you worked like a madman and got ridiculously lucky on appearances.
i know it was some time ago when i did it but from starting the knowledge till driving it took me 9 months i must admit i had a very good memory and it was when the carriage office was in Lambeth.but we did have the dungeon to contend with but we also had marcantonios for points.
Worst part about this, is that is it really worth it in the end? After watching some for you other vids about costs and earnings etc i dont think so. You could put the same amount of time and effort in to a degree or climbing up the corporate ladder and have much higher earnings on average. I get for you, you love doing the job, but for someone with a family to feed and need a work life balance no fucking thank you.
