  • NEL Storm Coil for the Garrett AT Pro. Air Test, Garden Test and Hunt (Knocked one off the Bucket List). I've used this coil for over a year. It's my go to coil for all our "Hunted Out" sites. I get questions everyday about this coil. I've been asked numerous times to do a review. Well here it is!! Enjoy.

    Thanks Kurt, I appreciated you taking the time to do this, what I think is, good test. I was swinging a place (Southern PA) where the goods seemed to be just on the edge of my AT Pro stock coil's reach. After watching your tests I order the NEL coil and indeed this coil's deeper reach was exactly what i needed. Thanks again for all your instructional tidbits.

    I've been watching the hoover boys channel for going on 6 years now and it has helped me out tremendously with my detecting and getting to know my machine. I've been running this set up for a few days after running the stock coil for a year but today I really put it to the test. I've been running on pro/custom mode, full sensitivity. Ive been pinpointing by working the coil up to the target in 2 directions.. My buddy runs the xp deus and absolutely smoked me in coins which is a bit discouraging, however I absolutely killed it on iron rings and a giant axe head hahah. All hit in the mid/high 80s. got some memorials that sounded nice.. Hopefully I'm not doing something wrong. I'll press on with it and try to learn more and find more. Thank you and the guys for the years of awesome footage and spreading the joy and love of history.

    Fantastic info - thanks for the great vid. Gonna give the Storm a try. Most importantly, your love token is a PHENOMENAL find - a bucket list item for me as well, and I can't tell you how happy it made me to hear your excitement - I have seen too many people online complain that they found a defaced coin which is like a gut-punch... Seemingly not realizing that it doesn't get any more special than something that meant so much to someone... The fact that it matched your wife's name is icing on the cake. I sought out two seated love tokens with my girlfriend's initials on one and first name on the other, and she wears them every day. Loved seeing you flip that date side - it was an amazing reveal. Top notch. Cheers, man....

      +BB_in_ Maine Thank you for the Kind words. I love holed coins, stamped, rolled, and carved. Gives them more character. But a love token? Wow it's something special. One of my favorite finds. So I'm watching this video about listening closely to what the machine is telling you so I grab up my AT PRO and head back out into the yard.I did a factory reset pro zero max sen and started digging all of those weird sounds.

    Thanx, Kurt! Luv this video. I've only been detecting for 2 years now (recently retired) and have learned a great deal from you and the Hoover Boys thanks to your UA-cam videos. Santa brought me a Nel Storm coil for my AT Pro a few weeks ago and I'm waiting for the snow to go away (here in Utah) so I can get outdoors again. I go nuts waiting for the ground to thaw....Oh, I also got a Foo-Foo juice spray bottle from you guys just 'cause I'm a big fan of yours. Keep the good videos coming. I gotta tell ya brother, you just answered so many questions I had with this video. I run the stock 8.5x11 stock coil on the AT Pro. I'll get the bigger one some day, I just have to convince the wife :-), but I want to thank you for this video, very, very helpful in the different tones I've been hearing based on depth and passing it off as being iron. From now on I'll listen for the pop I've passed over so many times. Thanks again. hh

      +MrBryanBarry My pleasure Bryan. So many people listen for perfect signals and VDI's. Number one rule for me is if it's deep dig it. Most of our deep signals sound terrible until we pop a plug, get some of the dirt away, and they clean up. Best of luck

    Nice test. A friend just got this machine and I told him to get this coil. One test you didn’t show in the air or ground was how the signal is effected when the coin is at differ angles like 45° or 90° vs flat as you showed. That gets best signal but show how the signal changes when coin angle changes. Nice test I sent this video to him to watch so he will upgrade.

    Excellent video, Kurt! Thanks so much for all of the valuable info. I've learned alot about depth, flutter & pop from you and realized that I've probably been passing up some good targets that I thought were iron with my AT Pro... glad you told me to dig anything that's deep, especially those deep "iron" tones that pop. I'm pretty much sold on either a NEL Storm or Tornado now and can't wait to get one. Question for you -- using the NEL Storm, do you hunt with Iron Audio on all the time, or only when you get to an interesting/deep target? Thanks & HH!

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  6 років тому +1

    • @buzzzlightyearable
      @buzzzlightyearable 6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Kurt. Gotcha - I've been running wide open on Pro Zero mode with iron discrimination up at about 20-25, but I'm going to take your advice and go with 0 iron discrimination unless I get to areas where it's really infested with iron trash. I don't want to take the chance of missing good deep stuff that might be non ferrous but still sounding off as iron, or interesting deep iron.
      Can't wait to get a Storm or Tornado coil for my AT Pro. I'm trying to hit some home/farm sites showing up on 1851 map that are now out in the woods, and one of them in particular has produced good finds so far after only spending a couple of hours there (Flying Eagle cent, 1870's British Mappin & Webb hallmarked silver pen knife, etc.).

    Great video Kurt. I just picked up the Nel storm coil for my Atpro. Where is the pinpoint hot spot on the Nel storm coil?
    Is it directly in the center of the coil or one of the square cut outs on the coil like it is on the stock 8 1/2 x 11 coil.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому +1

      New England Metal Detectors Thank you! For me it's dead nuts in the middle. The bolt is is the middle on the Storm. The stock coil the bolt is below the middle of the coil. If I'm on a good target the pinpoint is dead on. It takes some getting used to. I've used this coil for a while now

I hope to get 2"-3" or more depth with this new coil. I watched another video you did comparing the Pro, Gold and Max which makes me think the Max would have been a better choice for me since I hunt for coins first, any relics is a plus. Well K.K I finally got the Storm coil. I've searched the Web for anything I could find to help me learn this coil. I've been out with it 2 days and it's driving me crazy it doesn't pin point as well as the stock coil and I end up with a 3ft×1ft. hole WTF I guess it takes time to figure it out. But I'm have trouble with where the actual spot is once you have it pin pointed. The coil is so huge is it at the center of the coil. I've even tried the back off method and the cross cross method. I just don't want to be 1hr looking for a pull tab. You know what I mean!Well out of all the videos out there yours was the best instructional out. Thanks for Sharing KURT. See these are the things that take time out of Kurtz life and that's what makes me a lover not a hater. Time is precious and he does it for us. SO stop the Hating.

    Great video man.... all your videos are great. I'm getting ready to upgrade the coil on my at pro.. this storm coil was my first choice but after looking the thunder coil hold up in stats against the storm and is lighter... have you ever used the thunder? If so does it stand up to the storm? Will it interchange from the pro to the max?

      The Thunder is definitely lighter. Both deep. Can go wrong with either. This was before the Thunder came out. The coils are frequency sensitive. Shouldn’t be interchanged

    Kurt how does soil mineralization effect the NEL? I live in the south and in my area the soil is low to medium mineralization or little iron in my area. That should work well for the NEL I would think and it looks like the average extra depth is 21/2 to 3 " deeper. You did a great job comparing the two. I've got the 5 X 8 and the stock coil for my PRO. It seems the stock is deeper but for me it is harder to pinpoint. That makes a difference in somebody's yard. My question is, how much deeper on average do you think the 5 X 8 is over the stock coil? In my soil I can't tell much difference. Thanks

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому

      +F75digger I don't have the 5x8 to compare them. It's hard to say. I only use my small coil in iron or high trash. This differs from site to site. I think it's important to have a coil for every situation. In yard the 5x8 or Stock are all you need

      The Hoover Boys I have read on older AT Pro models that they have 1-2 more inches of depth than mine that was made in 2014.For some reason the owners sent their AT Pros to Garrett to get a upgrade or any other fix and was sent back to the owner with less depth.That's not mine, but interesting that there possibly might be depth issues with other detectors out there.I do run mine the same as you and it just seems i'm just missing something.I found a merc. in a park down 6.5 inches and had to really fight for it , no vdi.Must be this Indiana soil. Thanks.

    Somebody's probably asked you this before, so I apologize in advance. But why the NEL Storm coil over the NEL Attack coil? Gonna definitely buy one of the two, any insights? To me it looks like the Attack coil is superior in everything? Am I missing something? Ps. I REALLY love your videos, and appreciate your time making them. I've learned a lot from them. Still trying to figure out the "flutter" of deep coins though. Some of the targets in your videos I wouldn't have dug. They seem to "grunt" like iron. But thanks to your videos I know now to take a little more time on those signals. So thanks again.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому

      +chadscottification I was between the Attack and the Tornado so I went with the Storm. There's all great coils. The Storm has worked for me over and over again. It all depends how much weight your arm can take and how much money you want to spend. Deep targets will bounce all over the VDI chart and in the iron zone. Next time you beep a penny signal slowly lift your coil off the ground while swinging. The signal will sound like iron right before you lose the signal. Extremely deep non ferrous targets will give an iron grunt sometimes. At those depths the machine is just guessing. I will never leave a deep target in the ground. They're always worth a pop in my book. Sometimes the signal will clean up after you pop it sometimes it's just a deep nail. But I know I didn't leave it for the next guy. One day the ground at our favorite site was really wet and all the iron nails sounded like silver coins. So I was wondering what the deep iron sounds were. So I started digging them. I was finding musket balls, buttons and coins at extreme depth. The machine was just guessing. Hope this helped. Best of luck to you

    I am very curious as to what your ground balance setting is on your AT Pro for the area of this video, or your area.
    Where I live I am running a ground balance between 93 and 94 (auto set by the AT). I have a very high concentration of iron in the soil here. Talk about dry dirt, the dirt here in the desert gets like cement during the summer, a pick ax bounces off it. lol I am currently cleaning out an area for my test bed and finding all sorts of " junk " metal at pretty good depths with just the standard 8.5x11 coil that came with the AT Pro. I am seriously thinking of getting a NEL Storm coil but wondering if it would work well in this hell for metal detectors. By the way, during the summer months the ground temperature gets up around 147 degrees, I know because I took a thermo gun and measured it.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  8 років тому

      +nmsidewinder Most of my sites range from 85-92 on Ground Balance. My ground gets pretty dry in the summer but nothing like you're explaining. I still hit Indians at 9" in the summer. In high mineralized ground a smaller coil is better to cut though. Kind of like high beams in the fog. The larger coils will see more minerals and throw off the machine. What state are you digging?

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder 8 років тому

      +The Hoover Boys
      I'm in the southern part of New Mexico, if I tossed a rock I could hit White Sands missile range.
      I know what you are saying about the high mineralized ground. It's like cluttering a radar beam with chaff, there is so much iron in the soil here near the mountains. Right now as I said I am cleaning out a test bed and from what the nearest neighbors say this land use to be a junk yard of sorts. I can believe it with all the junk I am finding. I envy you guys where you live finding all those old coins and nice dirt to dig in. lol
      I've got some ideas of where to do some hunting but everything and I mean everything is either privately owned or the government owns it. I've got a spy facility with huge parabolic antennas not 6 miles from my place, so who knows what other interference I am getting from their equipments as well. It's really tricky finding targets here at my place. I'm old school metal detector user, Like you said if you want to know what's in the ground ( no matter what the bells and whistles on the detector indicates) dig it up.
      I dig everything up, never know what you will find.

    so today was my first hunt with the storm coil on my at pro. i didnt see any gains over my stock coil... also, my air test maxed out at around 6 inches or so using a dime. i reset my machine, set sensitivity at half then ground balanced it, turned my sensitivity back up and the still wasnt a change. everything is hooked up nice and tight. whats going on? in your video you clearly have a night and day difference between stock and nel and ive seen you dig coins at like 14 inches or more. in fact, i didnt even find a single coin today. and is your nel noisy when you use it? oh, and i also ground balanced it manually as well

    What would you say is the best ATP NEL coil for a combination of good separation and depth? I dig some trashy ferrous areas and have found nonferrous targets mixed in as deep as 10 inches at least. I've probably missed so many targets though attempting to separate the trash from the good signals.

    Did you get the Thunder coil from Ukraine or somewhere in the US.? And is it really as good as the Storm? I'm looking to purchase one of them for my Garrett ATpro.

      I got it from Kellyco. Free shipping with promo code HOOVERBOYS. The Thunder is deep and it's lighter then the storm. I'll probably never use the Storm again

    hey hoover boys, have you used the 5x8 coil for the at pro and if so what do you think about it. Not sure if you've already talked about that coil or not. Thanks and HH!!!

      +roy dunn I don't have the 5x8. I do have the NEL Sharpshooter 5.5x9.5 the small coils are awesome for separation. I only use them when I'm hunting in iron around cellar holes. A lot of people love the small coils for every day swinging. The good old targets are too deep at our sites for the small coils

      ststock27 Thank you for watching. I bought mine on eBay. I know it shipped out of New England. I don't know the company. Bought it last year. Sorry

    Hi, would you suggest any other model in the NEL range, like the ATTACK or SHARPSHOOTER etc. the storm is a very hard item to find. ( nel hard to find in Australia ) cant find any dealers in this country. cheers bud.

      +Zeds notdeadyet Hahahaha! Yeah everyone is buying them up. In my opinion the Attack is a bit big. The tornado is a killer coil. 12"x13" I also have a sharpshooter for hunting in iron when I need separation

    Kurt, Love your Videos! Watched them all!Question regarding the NEL Storm 13x14 Vs the NEL Attack 15" .Will the 15 inch coil outperform the 13x14?Looking to purchase a "Mini-hoover" set up similar to what you use and wondered if the 15 inch coil would be better.Also whenever you get the time, tell us about your background music and sound affects....Love how you put your videos together! - Ricky Fix It

      Thank you for the support! I'm my opinion the Attack is over kill. Bill uses the Attack and he's never done anything I haven't depth wise. Look into the new Thunder coil too. I think it's going to be a super hot coil. Depth like the storm but better separation and it's apparently lighter than the stock coil. Which is a game changer.

    got a nel storm coil for my at-pro having a hard time pinpointing with it digging wide holes any helpful tips thanks Ron

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  8 років тому +1

      It takes time to learn it. Pinpointing is tough at first. Remember the center of the coil is where the shaft meets the coil. Not above the shaft like the stock coil. Good luck

    I'm on the verge of getting a Deus in place of my AT Pro. But this coil can save me another 6 months of spending the $1500.00. My concern is the weight. What do you think?

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  8 років тому

      I have a Deus. Bought it for the weight. Great for farm fields and Woods. The Pro/Storm is my go to everyday setup. It can get heavy if you swing it around. I sweep it. Let the grass absorb the weight. The tornado coil is another great option. An inch smaller, lighter and cheaper. Still great depth. Good luck

    I like how the at pro stays consistent on tone especially with the Nel. I have noticed the AT Max does not handle the same way. It likes to change tones to Iron instead of going faint. Does anyone else notice that?

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  6 років тому

      I haven’t had problems like that. I have had the Max get unstable in hot ground with the NEL. But it’s a coil made for the Pro. Looking forward to NEL making Max specific coils

    I find that the depth meter on my AT Pro reads most accurately in pin point mode and always reads deeper than the object really is when just looking at the meter outside of pin point mode. Is this what you find too?
    Happy New Year.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  8 років тому +1

      +Greg Appelgren Yeah. The meter is usually a little off. All depends on the size of the target. If the depth meter is pegged I'll dig it no matter what the signal. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

    I know you say you are getting tons of questions about this coil. Can I ask one. you say your ground balanced to 87 is that normal for your area cus I live in a area where it is normal to get readings from the high 80ies to low 90ies on the AT Pro when I ground balance and am wondering how well this coil will cope with the highly ferrous soil?Thanks Dennis
