    Calling Polygon 'unknown' is a bit of a mischaracterization. They are a massive bicycle manufacturer and have been around for decades. They been in North America for a while too and are very well known here for their mountain bikes. So they are a known quantity, with solid manufacturer warranty backing.

      The point is "do you have to spend $10k for a certain level of performance?" The answer is no you don't. You can pay $10k or you can pay $4.5k+2k (for wheels) and achieve similar performance. Doing the wheel swap test is kind of pointless in this case.

    Also important to note, for those Crit racers that are not sponsored and buy their own gear - the Polygon Helios at half the price, you can replace it with another brand-new Polygon Helios bike if you crash it & you will still be less the costs of the Scott for a single bike. Jeff- would love to see you do a review on the Tavelo Arrow and see if it is a Factor Ostro Van killer

    You touched on a topic that is likely one of the most under-evaluated performance aspects of a frame: power transfer efficiency. Why isn't the industry measuring and reporting loss of watts due to frame flex under high load (accelerating up a short climb, out of a corner as you say)? There seems to be a trade-off between compliance (for comfort) and stiffness (for power transfer) that is discussed, but it would be good to see some numbers on that topic. I'd think the % loss at higher power levels would be vary a lot between frames. You could probably add wheels into that mix.

    • @therider4909
      @therider4909 5 місяців тому

      Or maybe the watts supposedly 'lost' are so low that they are not worth talking about.
      Track and road sprinters putting out 1,500w for 20 seconds may well show a difference but for the vast majority of riders I'd bet real money that it is inconsequential.

  • @pierrex3226
    @pierrex3226 5 місяців тому +7

    Both are disks bikes. Why not use the Scott wheels on the polygon?
    The polygon wheels almost certainly have poor tyres with butyl tubes. Testing shows that alone is likely to be responsible for most of the time gap.
    And when commenting on bike comfort, you really have to be using the same wheelset, because most of the comfort these days comes from large(r) volume tyres.

    I’m from Malaysia. We have a lotttttt of these Polygon Helios A’s running around. Quite a decent number of them have slipping seat post issues. It can still be remedied. But if you’re a home mechanic, be ready to work on it if it slips. Other than that, it’s a great bike for its asking price.

    • @apair4002
      @apair4002 5 місяців тому

      Nasib baik aku guna entry level pardus all rounder frame, conventional seatpost clamp. Kalau confirm podium race dlm Malaysia boleh la angkat yg mahal, kalau dah podium pasti ada sponsor nanti. Kalau kaya bolehla angkat satu yg mahal, kalau jatuh takla makan hati. haha

    • @ariffau
      @ariffau 5 місяців тому +1

      @@apair4002 yes, usually cheaper & entry level frames do not have a lot of other proprietary stuff so it comes with conventional seat post and clamp is good for us normal people.
      We are not sponsored nor do we have a full time mechanic 24/7 on standby at our Service Courses. Haha.
      Btw, on the topic of seat posts, there are 2 types.
      1. Clamp style
      2. Wedge style
      Usually the ones slipping are those with wedge style. Wedge style may look nicer, cleaner and more aero by 0.0000000012 watts, but most famous bikes with slipping seat posts uses wedge style like Canyon Aeroad, Factor Ostro, Seka Exceed, Poly Helios.

  • @aaronjacobtrent
    @aaronjacobtrent 5 місяців тому

    Lots of folks have commented on methodology of the testing, so I'd like to look at some rough numbers.
    We can assume that 10 watts is worth 1 second per kilometer. We know this course is 12.25km.
    Let's assume (based on BRR and Aerocoach tests) that the Schwalbe One TLE (the stock Helios tire) is 10-20 watts slower than the GP5k for both wheels combined.
    Let's assume latex tubes are 5-10 watts faster than butyl tubes for both wheels combined.
    Let's assume the Scott has butyl tubes still.
    Now that assumptions are outlined, let's plug and chug:
    Swapping tires on the Helios should result in going 12-24 seconds faster or a range of 5 seconds faster to 7 seconds slower compared to the Scott.
    Swapping tires and tubes should result in the Helios going 18-36 seconds faster, let's cut it down the middle and call it 24 seconds. Consider that the Scott was 7 seconds faster in the later run, possibly wind conditions changed. So perhaps the Helios with fast tires/tubes on stock wheels is now in the range of 19:10 compared to the Helios on Reserve wheels. 20ish seconds, or about 15 watts.
    TL:DR
    1) Roughly half of the difference between the Reserve and the Entity wheels can be attributed to tires and tubes
    2) On equal tires, the Helios is the same speed as the Scott in a steady state effort
    3) Really fast wheels are faster, but really fast rubber is worth a similar savings at 1/8 the cost.

The difference is so little compared to my Trek SLR is like this test 1% est. I'm an avg rider my 290 watts is only maybe 2-3 minutes if that. As much as we want to pretend that it doesn't, brand matters when you're speding this much on a bike. I can't see many people going for a Dura-Ace Polygon bike. Most people would prefer a lower end groupset with a well known brand printed on the downtube. A Polygon with 105 or SRAM Rival that significantly undercuts the big brands would be more compelling but even then most people will just want to save a bit more for the big brands.

    You really missed changing the wheelset for this test and I bet you had it in mind but simply decided not to do it? Dunno...
    EJ and you with the same sponsoring with Polygon 🔥

    I bought a 2002 Raleigh R700 off Craigslist, Aluminum Frame, carbon forks, ultegra shifters, rim brakes. Do you think I could beat you in a race if you're riding on that $4,500 let alone $9,000 bicycle? btw - I paid $275, Cash.

    Budget is go train to make yourself faster. Your rim brake bike isn’t gonna slow you down more than your fitness 🤸🏻‍♂️🤸🏻‍♂️

    PLEASE, stop saying OUTSIDE DIAMETER when the one you're measuring is really the rim's OUTER WIDTH. You have done this a lot of times already! Lmao

    When you think $4500 is budget, you have clearly been using 'Pro' discounts or flat out been handed the bikes from brands in exchange for these reviews. This shows just how far out of touch industry influencers have gotten.

    Some people don't want to ride a chines bike to not be in shame in front of other people.
    Men, i'm PROUD to ride my Winspace T1500+Hyper wheels and be faster than guys with bikes that are twice the price of mine !!

    I’d buy the Polygon simply because the brand name isn’t embarrassing. I can’t been seen in atop a weird Chinglish neologism like “Winspace”

    I really don't think any amateur cyclist needs Dura ace unless they are rich... Ultegra or 105 should be more that enough...

    Idk man, this isn’t budget. I understand you’re in the ‘world of racing’ and high end equipment, but ouch.
    I thought a 105 equipped TCR (what I got) was a budget option. Would be really interested in an actual budget bike (sub 2k? Still a lot…) vs these. And then throw some decent wheels and tires on each and see how close they get to each other.

    My take is somewhat different. Seems to me that the Polygon chassis is way better than the Scott. With the same wheelset it is faster and more comfortable. Job done.... Scott exposed...
