    Monk is my favorite! His advantage is not being a threat. The strong characters take themselves out.
    Strangely thematic.

      That's an interesting take. I feel he sometimes gets picked on because he's an easy target, and he's easier to take followers from.

      I've only played a few times so far, but the monk is definitely high up on my list. He starts with the same strength as the warrior (using his ability to add his starting craft) but can level up his strength more easily as his strength is so low to begin with (i.e. less trophies to trade). Also, the ability to choose whether to add +1 whilst praying is so good as it makes it a lot easier to get what you want at the temple and at shrines.

      I like the dwarf a lot. There is something quite pleasing about all those tiny little buffs. It makes it feel like you are always getting a little bonus no matter what you do. He's good value just for his ability in the mines!

    I'm new to Talisman and I figured 5th edition was a good place to get into it. These characters look like a lot of fun. I love the simple gameplay but high amount of emergent story talisman looks like it offers. Looking forward to getting my preorder copy! Thanks for your coverage it's getting me hyped.

    Great, *another* edition I need to buy.
    Might as well start with the Warrior, since that was the first character I played in first edition.
    At game conventions/tournaments the old standby rule with the Prophetess was that the card she didn't want ended up at the bottom of the deck, rather than the discard pile; nothing ticked off the evil characters more than her discarding the runesword.

    Regarding the Elf, when you land on a woods and just teleport between them each turn, avoiding what you need to and collecting all the good stuff, he really shines. If you're lucky enough to get a stream on a woods, you're going to get ahead pretty quickly. The fate movement kind of makes him better because it potentially helps you set up your forestwalking earlier.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      As I said in the video, it can be good when there is stuff in the woods you need, but with the new fate movement it's quite easy for other players to land on spaces they want anyway, and spaces like magic fountains tend to get drained rather quickly now. I think players tend to avoid the woods more when the elf is in play anyway to minimise the risk. It would be a slightly better option if you could roll for movement first, and then choose to teleport if you didn't like the result.

    I played a couple of games running two characters. Firstly, Thief and Ghoul. The Ghoul kept on getting his quality kit nicked and bumped into very few monsters to take as followers. The Thief walked all over him and romped to an early victory. Next up, the Elf and Dwarf; unlike the Thief and Ghoul there was not a whole heap of interaction. The Elf managed to skip away every time the angry Dwarf wanted to get friendly. Elf, triumphed over the Dwarf but it was quite close. I enjoyed both games very much but was left wandering how much fun the Dwarf would have when going head-to-head with the Prophetess, for example.

    Played / play currently 8 different characters out of the twelve. The Assassin beat the s&%€ out of all in the first game, the Priest collected enemy spirits like candy and the sorceress took the dwarf to town. Poor fellas, neither faith nor gold, ended up last of all.
    Now, Troll / Thief/ Monk & Warrior, boyo, the warrior started slow with the devious thief taking him out twice but even the troll gained craft & more strength the two weapons combined with the mercenary, wow (he beat the dragon so easily).the monk played very good, so much fun, turned evil and was on his way to take the crown as well, as was the troll, the thief ended up last.
    So, in my humble opinion, luck 🍀 & faith, the right cards and everything is possible with every character.
    Going to used the last 4 soon ( when I finished painting them ).
    Thank you for the insight and perspective on the game, highly appreciated.

    On the wizard card, it says "if you ever run out of spells immediately draw a new spell card, ensuring that you always have at least one spell, does that mean the wizard could potentially cast a ton of spells in one turn as long as he doesn't run into a spell you have to cast at a contextual time?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +2

      No. You can never cast more spells in your own turn than you started that turn with (maximum 3), so if you ever draw a card from running out you aren't able to cast it that turn. Additionally, you can only cast a maximum of one spell on another player's turn, and only a few spells are "any time" spells, the rest are for use in specific situations. So you can't spam your spells and I've rarely seen someone use more than one at a time.

    Is this game playable solo but controlling multiple characters? Just to see how it plays out?
    I know there is a co op expansion coming out soon but just curious if the base game is playable controlling multiple sides or would it really not work

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  4 місяці тому +1

      It's not designed for solo play - it's a race to see who gets the crown first - and even the new co-op expansion seems to be for at least two players. However, the only secret information is the spell cards, and there is nothing stopping you from taking on a couple of characters and just seeing what happens to them. You could also play with just one character by setting yourself a time limit - a number of turns to complete the quest.
      I actually play a lot of games solo that aren't officially intended for it, even playing miniatures skirmish games taking control of both sides, but Talisman isn't one I would consider doing it with because I feel the very streamlined gameplay really needs interaction with other players to spice it up. I have a full review of Talisman on the channel if you haven't checked it out, which goes through the gamplay in detail so you can get an idea of whether you might enjoy playing it solo.

      Ok yeah, like you I play many many games including many skirmish games that are designed as 2 player but solo. Some work fine for that while others don’t (even though you could) so it sounds like even though I could I probably wouldn’t have as much fun with talisman solo.
      I did however go down the deep hole on your channel and am looking into the Middle Earth TCG haha thanks for the content!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      We don't know exactly, but in my recent video on the Fate Beckons expansion I do go into that a bit. The expansion is introducing "villain characters" so it looks like there will be AI-powered rivals moving around the board and they will get more powerful as the doom tracker advances. I assume they will be accumulating items, followers and wealth that you will be able to take from them.
      If you check out my Instagram page (link in video description) I have just shared a spoiler image of four of these villains, and a fifth one is spoiled in my video on the expansion.

    Dwarf is great for an early win! But... maybe not with the Dragon. How tough is he?
    Also, the Monk actually is a lot more powerful with the new levelling rules. Essentially +3 strength but you can trade trophies on the cheap.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      The dwarf has won both times he has turned up in our games since playing fifth edition. I thin he's a great character.
      Not sure I understand what you mean about the monk being more powerful with the new leveling rules. The first time he levels strength he only needs three trophies, but then he will need four, then five, then six, same as every other character, yet no matter how much he levels his craft he will still only add three to his strength in combat. When you add in the fact he can't use weapons or armour, I still think he ends up being on the weak side of things. But other people in the comments find him quite a useful character, so opinions do vary!

    • @finelerv
      @finelerv 5 місяців тому

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring What I mean is, if another character had strength 5, he'd need 6 trophies to level up. The monk essentially starts with strength 5 in battles but only needs 3 trophies to level up (then four, and so on). Sure, it's not EXACTLY Strength 5 for the purpose of breaking down doors and stuff but it functions the same early on when you're just grinding.
      As for not being able to use weapons it DOES matter, but he basically has a +3 sword! It gets annoying when you can't use a Rune Sword but his mind is his weapon.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      The fact you can never add more than 3 craft to your strength in a battle, and you can't add strength to your craft in psychic combat, means I always feel like he's floundering below the curve. The assassin quite quickly ends up insta-killing whatever she meets and she really puts the pressure on other players to hurry up.

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That's true, the monk starts at +2 in battle above the Assassin and if he can draw right should be able to take out most creatures at str4 minimum, needing only 2 strength points to level up first should help as well, though my mind may change once I play a few games, still waiting for mine and the digital copy to be released.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      I suspect it was a combination of factors like space limitations on the box size they were pushing for, and keeping the costs down. I do quite like playing the warrior because I roll so badly it really does take some of the pressure off always having two dice in combat.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      Interesting idea. It's possible - they could do it without "locking" character choices because the rules allow you to change any character's alignment at the start of the game. However, changing alignment can happen multiple times throughout a single game so they will probably allow mixed groups anyway.

      A few characters were gender swapped, but of the 12 characters 7 are male and 5 are female, and it's the same line-up of character classes from the original (just without the druid and bard). I'm not sure how you are choosing to evaluate "strong" but there are some excellent male characters in the game. The troll has the highest strength and life scores, the dwarf has the second highest life score and a vast array of useful skills, the priest can insta-kill any spirit, and the wizard is the most powerful spellcaster. That said they are all supposed to be strong and competent in their skills. There are no joke characters intended to tear down or deconstruct the classes.
