Dear Sebastian, I really enjoyed every one of your videos. You are so incredibly knowledgable about fragrances, not to mention your talent of explaining things.
I didn’t wear or like perfume until I was introduced to the niche. My first one was Atelier Cologne and I liked how unique they smell but got frustrated by their bad longevity. Then I jumped into By Kilian, Parfum de Marly, Amouage, Frederick Malle and MFK. These have way better performance and found many more unique scents from them. So I never own a bottle of designer perfume. Now I’m addicted to perfumery. Thanks for the information!
Each Guerlain make up product I've tested smelled AMAZING. Best example: the Petit Robe Noire lipstick. Instead of making scented soaps and candles, they make scented make up. They do emphasize how important a scent is in all of their products. I don't know if it makes Guerlain niche, but that doesn't matter - their fragrances and make up are top quality. Great video, learnt a lot, thank you Sebastian :)
Not always. I think there are many designer houses who offer “interesting” scents. For example Hermes. I don’t think that all Hermes perfumes smell “nice”. They can be pretty weird for the mainstream
Thanks for the 30,000-foot macro view of the fragrance industry, Sebastian. I can't help but wonder how conglomerates negatively influence (in terms of originality and quality) their acquired niche brands and pull them towards the mainstream designer world until the fragrances are no longer original nor niche. As you say, Indy / Artisanal is the new niche.
Thanks for making this video, I was really interested in your opinion on this topic. In my mind lumping jewelry, glassware, makeup, skincare, luxury car brands, etc. in with designer houses is too general. To me "designer" = high end fashion houses... but the more I specify/try to categorize these things in my mind the less meaning they have. At the end of the day if it's unique, interesting, and well made, it's worth discussing; if it isn't it isn't.
Thank you for putting up this video, I for one have been confused a lot by the term niche been thrown around and was starting to struggle to identify what is niche and what's not. Very informative. Thank you!
I have only just started to take a proper interest in fragrances and have not yet sampled many Niche fragrances. But from what I have sampled, I love the strength and complexity of Niche. Frederic Malle is one of my favourite. Dominique Ripion to be a bit more specific.
For years I thought I didn’t like fragrances much because literally all women’s designer fragrances were the same super sweet/white floral scents. Then I discovered Tom Ford’s private blends, and it blew my mind to what fragrances could smell like. From then on, it was down the rabbit hole I went...
I completely agree with you on this point. In my view, fragrance is already a niche market, so in order to not be redundant I think niche should be a term used only for brands that make fragrance their only product. So, they are a niche company in a niche market. I think the 'niche style' designers should just be referred to as exclusive/private lines, since they are less available and usually much more expensive. I have thought about this a lot LOL and I have changed my opinion, but as of now this is what I think is the most logical. Since fragrance is already a niche market (just for people who enjoy fragrances) then saying that a designer, who makes other products, is also niche just makes it more confusing. To make things simple, designer brands are designer, if they have exclusive, or private lines then just call it exclusive. However, niche fragrances should only be from those houses that only make fragrance, because that is their only focus and craft, just strictly products that involve fragrance. So, Guerlain for instance is niche to me because it is a house the produces mainly fragrance as their main product and focuses the majority of their resources on producing fragrances.
Great topic. For me, the driving factor is my desire to enjoy the scent I’m wearing, be it indie, niche or designer, but looking at my collection, I’m more drawn to niche and indie over designers
I always wonder why anyone could label Guerlain designer - their heritage is in perfumery, their fragrances are more niche in style and whilst they might sell make-up, that's very different to say clothing or sunglasses. Definitely niche for me.
Please try a fragrance from an small in-house company in Glasgow Scotland called Pocket Scents. Surprising quality and inexpensive. I would love to see you review one of they're scents.
To me, Niche is a city in Serbia (Niš). 😁 I love some designers like Dior Homme Intense or Prada L'Homme and some niche like MFK's Baccarat Rouge 540 edp od Amrys Homme .... I section my parfums by like and dislike, not designer or nish, like many people I presume. Great content. 😁
I think Guerlain can be considered a niche house. I think they may not be considered niche because they have so many affordable offerings. I'm not even mad because I really like Guerlain. Question, would a house like Diptyque be considered niche when they also make candles, skin care products, and air fresheners? And if they are considered niche, why wouldn't Guerlain be niche as well?
I've learned in this video very interesting things about niche and designer perfumes....... I consider Guerlain a niche brand because some of their frangrances are unique especially the exclusive range thanks so much Sebastian 🖤👍🖤🖤
I'm 100% in category B; I love what's unique, unusual, off-the-beaten-trail. I also tend to gravitate toward green, woodsy, resinous, earthy fragrances.
I was really introduced to fragrance by some of the more interesting designers. Comme des Garcons and Maison Margiela, specifically. I quickly turned my interests onto the more Indie/Artisinal side of niche. Lately I find myself grabbing easier to wear stuff from my collection. Unknown Pleasures, Field Notes From Paris, Camel, and Au Coeur du Desert all get regular play. Sometimes I want more challenging stuff. I guess my mood comes in phases lol.
Hi Sebastian, thank you so much for clearing up some of the nagging questions I've been asking friends if a particular perfume is a designer or niche. Your video help me a lot. Keep up the good work !!
Even if you think you know what all of the differences mean, people will still argue their opinion on the matter. Great to have a condensed discussion and have your thoughts on this topic :)
Jo Loves Pomelo is great I also repurchase the body spray in Tuberose the latter not long lasting but it smells amazing. However, when I layer it that gives it some longevity but only close to the skin-no real projection!
I find niche everything that smells kinda different. For example, Zara Rich, warm, addictive is niche af to me. Same with BR540 and Kalan, for example. Other Parfums de Marly I don't consider niche as much, like Darcy and Saffanad. Although I like them, I feel like I've smelled them before.
I agree with you, but I’ve watched an interview with Frederic Malle in instagram, and he said that his house is not a niche brand, and asked not to name it so. He’s trying to build something luxurious like Chanel.
In other words he wants to make copious amounts of money...I guess he sees niche as limiting in terms of building his capital. That said his perfumes are worthy!
Guerlain is the only brand that i can think of that is strictly in fragrance..i consider them technically niche..it doesnt really matter how much the house charges for a fragrance..if the house only does fragrance by definition it has to be considered niche despite the size of the company...Gueralin is the worlds largest perfume company ..only creating fragrance. I hate the snobs who try to consider Guerlain designer...
I love many fragrances, I like designer, such as Prada, Shiseido, Hermes. I also love niche, Serge Lutens --- but now Lutens has been purchased by Shiseido. So what is Lutens now? Byredo was also purchased by a large conglomerate. I love Amouage, but I also love Light Blue! Lots to love in the perfume world --- an expensive hobby for sure. I must have 100 bottles....... so far.
Great insights Sebastian. My idea of what’s niche and designer certainly echoes yours. Indie is certainly the way I’m leaning now apart from a few exceptions (Clive Christian is my guilty pleasure!). I appreciate the creativity allowed by independence from a larger organisation. Also, I would rather give my hard earned money to someone who’s pricing reflects the true value of the scent rather than some arbitrary mark up associated with larger organisations who have cut the base materials to the bone. Well, at least I live in hope that is the case!
Surprised you didn't address the elephant in the room: a lot of people talk/care about "niche" when what they really want to talk/care about is "more expensive".
I watch your reviews and important hints and words,,which you put emphasis on a fragrance or fragrances, and taking them as important references and then select fragrances according to that. It's for both niche and designers. So far this strategy has been working great for me. Thanks for the discussion.and all the reviews you are making Sir
Thank you for your great video!!! Very interesting and informative also. I prefer an interesting, well made , sophisticated fragrance regardless if it is a niche or a designer one 🥰
To me Guerlain is not designer nor niche. It's mainstream, like Lancome (but much more interesting and with a longer tradition), with a few exclusive/boutique-lines that can be considered more as niche.
I heard the Zara Emotions collection was supposed to become available in the States sometime this year. They were planning on opening up shops before the end of 2020.
Hi from France! According to you, when did we begin to speak about " niche fragrances"? Which one would be the oldest? Some people say that Lutens perfumes are "niche", all right he does'nt create clothes or glasses, but we find him in big shops in France like Sephora...So for me it is not. What do you think about that.?
Well there was a time when Jacques Fath made clothes but they no longer do and they are owned by a company called Panouge and they strictly focus on perfumes and perfumed products nothing else so yes I agree with you they are niche! :)
@ MarsOnEarth Ahh I see....that makes some sense, too. I figured they were designer because I associated them with selling skin care, lipsticks, make-up, and other products...
I know, this house is a tricky one. I personally call it luxury. Its not a designer brand; since they produce skincare, fragrance, and makeup. But I don't consider it niche, only because they do not focus solely on scent based products; as well as being more produced and available compared to traditionally niche fragrance brands. However one can argue many of their releases are niche; so who knows. Im no expert, just my 2 cents rant. P.S. Guerlain is one of my favorite houses all around.
@sweet pea Well, the important thing is how much you enjoy Guerlain. I think calling it a luxury house is a good call. I'll adopt that, because I don't consider them niche.
Nice info in the video. Some funny facts: when designers were great in the 60's to the early 90's, most niche houses were either inexistent or had normal prices and not so innovative fragrances. I remember when I was in England in 2005, all Creed fragrances were priced between £100-120. After they launched Aventus that got hyped by reviewers...well we all know what are their prices now. The difference is not improved quality or performance, but brand value. I agree that lately the designers launch poor fragrances that are very similar. Maybe 10% of designer fragrances launched every year are good. So here niche wins. I also find it funny that some niche houses copy designer fragrances and some of them can be considered clone niche houses - Parfums de Marly is the best example. Not the mention Jeremy's or other reviewers "houses". You are very lucky that you can afford some great niche fragrances that are really innovative. However paying $ 200 or even more than $ 2000 for 100 ml of fragrance is just not possible for most people.
I feel like I need to take a test about this ... as far as niche fragrances from Lush Cosmetics, Molten Brown and Pennhaligons come I to play . Are they categorized as niche . ? I’m loving more niche as I get into more bedspoke fragrances since niche smell more higher quality.
I would certainly classify those brands you mentioned as niche. Now once again what is really niche? In the end I am only distinguishing between if they make clothes, jewelry, cars etc or not! :)
I know I’m a year late ⏰ but I have been following a few of your “FAVORITES” videos and I have noticed that you do not mention Creed at all, but everyone else and they’re mother does on every blog and every website and every video. But you do not talk about Creed or I have not seen it in the rankings I watched So could you tell me why that is?
No I mention Creed but not a lot but there are other brands that I do not mention at all but creed I do! Look for it! I even mentioned one of their fragrances in my Saturday video last Saturday did you miss that one?
You turned me on to the Designer Frags that I never would’ve batted an 👁 to: Van Cleef and Arpels are Really Nice 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 and downright cheap on Fragrancenet! Tom Ford(The Eva Monroe is responsible for my TF love) But Dior exclusifs...Chanel... Sebastian YOU turned me into a Nichehead😂😂😂
Since you ask for suggestions : I think you are the only on YT, at least English speaker, who tries to approach the topic of fragrances with more depth. However, I think you should add more quality content for example inviting more experts and discussing the history of perfumes and why some succeed and others discontinue, etc. But overall, I find your videos much better in terms of scenarios and content than the others who obviously copy what others do with very limied knowledge on the topic. I THINK if you lose the cap, it would be much better 😊
Very interesting, good vid, i guess I'm not a total frag head, I like fragrances that are wearable and smell good, lol, designer or niche. Have great night.
To me Guerlain is niche. They have a line that's for mass-market but most of their fragrances are boutique exclusifs . Plus they started off as perfume house. Also before they were bought out there was hardly any place that you could buy any Guerlain unless you went a high end department stores
Jeremy’s brand is a little tricky. I would consider him designer only because his fragrances are very mass appealing and not as “artistic”, imho. But then again for the moment he only sells fragrances...it could go both ways...lol

I just want to enjoy whatever scent I'm wearing...
Didn't think I like fragrance until I discovered niche\Indie. Now dipping into vintages I realize how much things changed for the designer fragrances.
Totally I am with you re vintages!! :)
Most of us start w/ designer, but then we graduate to niche and artisanal. Good overview.
Hehe, I started with niche, and then graduated to designer and indie.
I went to niche and went back to designers because they smell better and aren't so specific for a certain purpose or setting
same @@NPC123UH 😅
300$ is niche. No matter the brand, its niche.
I didn’t wear or like perfume until I was introduced to the niche. My first one was Atelier Cologne and I liked how unique they smell but got frustrated by their bad longevity. I think the only difference is the price tag. I’ve smelled drug store cheapies that are better than niche. It’s about what works in my opinion

Guerlain perfumes are very unique and special. I love it
@@Analysaddict Shalimar was my mother’s signature scent. I haven’t smelled anything like it.
Designer for those who want to smell "nice"
Niche for those who want to smell "interesting"
Not always. I think there are many designer houses who offer “interesting” scents. For example Hermes. I don’t think that all Hermes perfumes smell “nice”. They can be pretty weird for the mainstream
@@Analysaddict Great counter response. Terres d'Hermes is a great example.
@@Edward_Rogue yeah I hated that smell. Got a sample. Smells hurt my nose
That’s not true tho. Guerlain, hermes even dolce gabbana with light blue forever shows that’s not the case

In my opinion, Guerlain is niche but they have some offerings that compete with the designer level fragrances, like their L'Homme Ideal line.
Guy has explained so well that I instantly subscribed. Done better than the other more established channels
I have only just started to take a proper interest in fragrances and have not yet sampled many Niche fragrances. But from what I have sampled, I love the strength and complexity of Niche. Frederic Malle is one of my favourite. Dominique Ripion to be a bit more specific.

Niche houses, to me, are houses that are built around the creation of fragrances. That's why Maison Margiela and Tom Ford aren't niche.
of course they are not! People who think Margiela and TF are niche they clearly have no idea of the brand.
Who cares?
Guerlain is a curious case 🤔 I just consider them a perfume house personally.
That's exactly it!! :)
in france we considere it a designer house

Tom Ford(The Eva Monroe is responsible for my TF love) But Dior exclusifs...Chanel... Sebastian YOU turned me into a Nichehead😂😂😂
Right on
So, lancome and guerlain are niche or designer?
It’s a technicality. I list them in the designer category!
You can kiss me bye bye with the cap cause if it leaves I leave too! ;)

Keep up the good work

What would you consider your top 5 Niche houses for mens cologne?
I'm planning a video on this topic stay tuned! :)
Guerlain should not be categorized as niche or designer. It should be in its own category, heritage.
Informative as always 👌
Very interesting, good vid, i guess I'm not a total frag head, I like fragrances that are wearable and smell good, lol, designer or niche. Have great night.
We have the Jo Malone x Zara here in Australia.
To me Guerlain is niche. They have a line that's for mass-market but most of their fragrances are boutique exclusifs . Plus they started off as perfume house. Also before they were bought out there was hardly any place that you could buy any Guerlain unless you went a high end department stores
Are Jeremy Fragrance Office/date fragrances considered Niche?
Niche/indie
Jeremy’s brand is a little tricky. I would consider him designer only because his fragrances are very mass appealing and not as “artistic”, imho. But then again for the moment he only sells fragrances...it could go both ways...lol
Also, I don’t think Jeremy does his own packaging....I could be wrong.
Thanks alot for info 👍
What would Byredo be considered?
Niche.
@@ThePerfumeGuy thanks!
