Squier is NOT Fender

  • After posting my video "How to Spot a Fake Fender in Seconds" a few years ago... one of the most common comments is "Squier is made by Fender, so it's not fake." In the video I show how people fake fenders by rubbing off the Squier logo and put on a fake Fender logo on it. This video explains why that makes it a fake Fender. That is not to say that a Squier is a bag guitar... I own many of them, but it is a fake fender if you try and pawn it off as a Fender. I take a look at a number of guitars, Squier, Fender, and parts guitars to see where the fake line is drawn. I hope this video clears up the confusion.

You are so right about people changing decals and trying pass off a lesser brand as a premium brand. I own and play live with two Squier guitars, but I always tell people the guitars are the Squier brand. Enjoyed your video.

Squiers are no more Fender than Epiphone is Gibson. Putting a Fender logo on a Squier really just means one of two things. You're either insecure about a owning a Squier and you're trying to impress a bunch of cork sniffing gear snobs or you're up to no good and you're trying rip someone off by passing a Squier off as a Fender.

Kennis Russell I just got one a little over a month ago, the Squier CV Custom Tele 60s. It is indeed a very nice guitar. Super light, too. I did replace the nut with a GraphTec nut, but, other than that, definitely no complaints.

Yeah the Squier Classic Vibes are so much better than most ( bone nut, no fret sprout, etc) MIMs but if somebody put a fender logo on it then it is still fake. much like if somebody took a MIM Fender and put a squier logo on it instead then that would be a fake squier guitar....not that anybody would do that. i would be pissed if i bought what i thought was a classic vibe squier but it turned out to be a MIM Fender I would be pissed.

Me too! But so what? Who is arguing? How is this relevant? Did you spend $1500 or $2500 on it thinking you were getting a USA Fender only to get it home and realize the it was a Classic Vibe with a fake logo put on it? Guessing not. Kennis has never said Squiers can't be good guitars, only that if someone slaps on a Fender logo and sells it as a Fender, it's a fake.

I will say that early 80's Japanese Squiers with the JV and SQ serial numbers are very nice instruments. I love my SQ P-bass and Telecaster. A pickup swap and a refret to 6105s made the Tele perfect. Not that there was anything wrong with the existing fretwork, I just prefer bigger frets over tiny vintage ones.

Hi there, great video! Since the topic of the video is about Squier branded instruments, there are some interesting facts about it: of course, those of us hip to fender history are aware of the Japanese squiers of the eighties. These guitars and basses are now almost as coveted as the Japanese Fender branded instruments, due to the excellent build quality (and I believe they were also produced on the same assembly lines at times). There’s also the strange case of Korean made Fender instruments and Mexican made Squier instruments, as well as the Fender branded instruments with Fender decals on the headstocks that were marketed in the “Squier series”.
By the by, I would like to mention that I own a couple of Squier instruments, both of which I’ve completely replaced every part save for the body and neck, and have put the fender decal on the front of the headstock. Essentially, these instruments are now almost completely custom to my taste for studio and live performance. Likewise, I built a bass with a Squier body and an MIM fender neck that I dearly love. HOWEVER, even though I’ve put the fender decals on, I have kept the Squier serial numbers. If ever I sell these instruments (which to be honest I doubt I will, though that’s regardless to the main point), I will put them up for sale as squiers with heavy modification. It doesn’t matter that I put custom shop pickups in them, high end electronics, and really nice hardware, they’re still Squier made instruments at their core. Exception of course would be the partscaster I did with the Squier body and fender neck, because that does have a fender neck with a fender serial on it.

One of my favorite strats ever is the recent black Squier Bullet that has the HSS configuration and the sparkle pickguard. The neck on that thing played amazingly well. Sadly, the electronics aren't great, but it's a REALLY cheap instrument that looks more impressive at first glance than many Fenders. It just has that look that I love. You could get one new for 130 bucks (might still be able to) but I think I got mine used for like 70 or 80. I left it with a teacher since he didn't have one in his classroom studio. However, I'd play one of those things in full stadiums with no guilt. It didn't sound as good as many guitars, but it felt amazing to play and looked great. I've played a few MiM Strats that actually felt worse to play and (to be fair due to having only single coils) sounded worse for what I play. On the other hand, the best strat I've ever played was a Mexican Strat with a Carvin pickup in the bridge. In conclusion, I don't know what my point was but guitars are cool.

After watching the video, I understand what you meant. People are ripping others off by saying a Squier is a Fender, and that's not cool. I agree. And I did learn a lot from the video.
But at the expense of kicking the hornet's nest (I know many in the comments will disagree), I see where there's confusion. The "Squier by Fender" part *is* kinda open to interpretation. Because without knowing what you explained, one can look at it and think, "Are they the same? Is one a subsect if the other? They seem related." It threw me for a loop myself, so I can understand someone looking at that logo and thinking it's a Fender.
You're still 100% right that Squier and Fender are different, but I'm saying that I can't blame anyone for missing that.

The 2016 "Squier" *Skullcaster* Haruna Ono (Scandal) Signature model is labeled a Squier® but technically it .is a Fender. That specific run of 300 units are pretty much all Fender parts specs. The first run in 2014 were made to be beginner guitars. The 2nd run though the build was completely changed with different paint, shielding bridge pickups etc. at the request of the artist.
Having worked with the band at the time *Haru* wanted the guitar to be closer to what she actually plays. The design was changed. A compromise was made To keep it in the same price range as the 2014s the company band branded case was deleted & the guitar sold by itself only. The only reason the 2016s had a Squier ® logo on the headstock was the band's sponsored contract said it had too. I
I have had many techs look at the guitar and 100% have said it is better quality than an Ameican made Tele. There are exceptions to the rule. I know this is a rare case but sometimes labels aren't what they mean.

How did happened when they put Squires logo on the headstock because they had the Fender serial number. It supposingly happened when Fender came out with the HSS HT with the Rosewood Fretboard because it happened to me when I traded a Ibanez acoustic electric thinline guitar made in 1992. The salesman at Sam Ash said he had a Squires Bullet that had been in the backroom for two years and I only paid 35 dollars difference. A little bit later I had a friend who had been playing the guitar for 40 years was going to put new strings on it had never seen a HSS HT Squires before and he was looking it over happened to look at the serial number and it was a first of the American Standard series. What made him notice was the Headstock was a Fender. For a hobby he worked on used Fender guitars for a friend sold the once a month at a flea market that had one Saturday a month just for people to buy, sell, and trade guitars. I had it for 4 years before it got stolen.

Hello. Congratulations on the channel. I don't agree with the argument regarding the value of guitars made in the USA or in Mexico. For example here in Europe a Fender Stratocaster USA standart costs about 1400 dollars and a Mexican standart costs 600 dollars. In the used market, one made in the USA costs between 800/900 dollars and a Mexican made an average of 420/470 dollars.
In my reality a made in the USA loses more value, however being realistic the Fender made in the USA have more quality, but knowing from Fender's own information the factory in mexico has excellent quality, what makes them cheaper is the fact that the labor is cheaper and some pieces of hardware and the finish on paint job.

I don't have a problem though with someone putting a Fender logo on a squier as long as they make it known that is what they are doing and don't try and sell it as a fake. The second you start erasing serial numbers and putting fake Fender serial numbers on squiers then I have problem. I have a friend who put a Fender logo on a squier tele he owned, but he kept the squier serial number and even wood burned fake in the back of the headstock to prevent someone trying to sell it as Fender before he sold it.

Well if the body is NOT Fender made, and the pickups and other parts are NOT made by Fender than it is disingenous to pass it off as Fender. It is a "parts guitar" or "custom build parts guitar". The neck is legit, but just the neck, not the whole guitar. The thing is people use the Fender logo to appraise value to guitars thay dont have that value. If i have a chinese made strat rip off, and just change the neck to make it "a fender" i would still be ripping off someone by just passing it off as a Fender, or charging that person 600 dollars which is what the cheapest price for a new MIM Fender.

Sometimes people replace the necks with legit Fender necks and then you have technically a Fake Fender but you didn't do that on purpose, you just liked a different neck and had it replaced, the logo comes with it.
Tbh though if you replace the hardware and the neck they're pretty much indistinguishable, even in cost because it would cost you enough to do those mods that it would be like buying a MIM Fender instead of a Squier

we bought a jimmy vaughn strat,we thought was new back around 2006 or so,a beautiful guitar,an i put a lil 59 in bridge an much later took the tex mex sticker off,but eventually the frets wore pretty fast,as so did a 91 american standard i once had, anyway, paint started coming off this guitar, an found out later it was a first year 1996,an heard of one or two more jimmy vaughn strats with paint coming off around near where neck joins, frets are low now,it plays an sounds great,we paid about 630.00 cash at firehouse musick for it,an i swear we thought it was new, been played all over atlanta an church etc for years an still played with humbucker i put in an tex mex pickups..i honestly believe my first year 50,s classic vibe strat 50,s is better quality, no clue really..but paint coming off a signature guitar sux,an frets not lasting long at all sux too,a great spanky twangy sound,an lil 59 sounds great..but american strats are too high priced,an some suck..i bought a squire classic vibe 50,s for 70 bucks at a pawn shop,i seen vintage tuners an a lotta shiny lacquer,an gold in the squire logo,an i knew someone had screwed up,an a guy ran the numbers on it,an came back as a 2008 classic vibe 50,s an is very nice,a 380.00 guitar for 70 bucks, yep someone screwed up,an just bought a classic 50,s daphne blue strat, mexican, pretty nice, but dang near too narrow for my huge hands, with 7.25 radius i think.....beautiful..i do not trust american guitars no more, ..1800.00 bucks for an american strat, made by mexicans in southern california..nope...

fender actually copied squire once..In 2004, squire produced a model called, 51. It is a guitar with a Stratocaster styled body ,a telecaster styled neck..It had a single coil at the neck, a humbucker at the bridge with coil tap..There were two knobs, one is the volume control, and the second knob is a 3-way pick up selector.. The guitar has no tone control. The guitar is called the 51 because the pick guard resembled the 1951 fender telecaster bass pick guard.
this is a six string electric guitar.. I believe they made them in 2004, 2005, 2006. They did not sell well, now they are a valuable collectors item and sell for much more than they listed for depending on condition.. fender actually copied this guitar , Sold it as a fender guitar, and called them the pawnshop models..

I own a few guitars. One is a Squier Stratocaster. Another is a Fender Telecaster. The Strat is a REAL Stratocaster, but it is not a real FENDER Stratocaster. The Tele is a REAL Telecaster, as would be a Squier, but the difference is that it's a real FENDER Telecaster. Both are good guitars, but the difference is that I could get about $400 - $500 for the Tele, but only about $100 for the Strat. If I put a Fender logo on the Strat, it would still be a real Strat, but it would be a fake Fender.

It's 2years ago I want to put my comment in the last month of 2022. Squire it's not a fake Fender guitar, it's a Squire yes it is not a Fender, a Squire is a Squire, a Fender is a Fender. Yes Squire made or designed by Fender but it's not a Fender guitar, back again Squire is Squire. But it's true if someone rub off the Squire logo and changed it to a Fender logo and claimed it's a Fender well it's fake because it's not a Fender, it's a Squire. From the beginning I knew what Russel want to discuss or talk about "There are some people take off Squire logo on the headstock and changed it to Fender logo and they said this is a Fender". That's it. CMIIW Fender and Squire are brands even though one of them made or produce a brand under the main brand well it's different thing and brands. Just think with logic "Why a brand made another brand that exactly the same but with low price?" -> this impossible there are must be a different thing or many things between those two brands, are they the same? Nooooo. Squire is a Fender? of course not. A Fender Electric guitar for example $4000 and a Squire only $600 is it logic? Lol. 😅🤣 I know what Russel talked about. Cheers....

Tens maybe. Plays and sounds just fine, btw.

Sir, you got it all right, Squier is not a Fender, it only is owned and backed by Fender, made in Asia, not America, however yes I love Squier, they've come a long ways in the past 20 years, same goes with Epiphone, it's not a Gibson, only owned and made by Gibson in Asian factories in Asia, not America, and I love Epiphone also. Back in the 1990's I hated Epiphone, they were not like they are today, so both Epiphone and Squier have come a long ways, why do you think both Fender and Gibson went bankrupt 2 years ago, because they can't compete with the Asian market regarding building top notch instruments for a budget price, no more said, that also includes many other brands as well, Ibanez, Jackson owned by Fender and many more also, no more said, Robert from Canada!

You know, a lot of people really put a lot of emphasis on the name on the headstock. It all falls under the same corporate umbrella. It is ALL Fender, they have a foreign produced low-budget brand and that's for sure but Fender owns it and makes revenue. If you want to find out if your guitar belongs to said parent company or not, make some direct copies of Squires, LTDs and Sterlings and start selling them. Squire, LTD and Sterling will not be on the letterhead of the cease and desist letter you most certainly will be getting. That legal warning will most definitely be sent from Fender, ESP and Ernie Ball inc. Selling a Squire as a Fender is not cool obviously, as Squire is Fender's budget brand. Unfortunately this happens quite a bit. Reminds me of the time a friend of mine purchased an Acura Integra Type R and later found out that it was an Acura Integra GS with Type R badging and an upgraded interior. It's funny when I think back on it but at the time is wasn't cool. However, it was still a Honda lol! BTW I really like that black 1971 Jazz with the replacement neck. I think the weirdness makes it cool. Me personally I'd leave the headstock blank because it tells a story. When people ask you if it's a Fender you can shake your head "no" and say "yes".

  • @nobuna2114

Well Squier guitars are basically cheap Fenders but that doesn't mean that Squier also is Fender. They produce basically licensed copies of the original. Yes it says Squier by Fender but at the back of the headstock it also says "Designed and backed by Fender" which just means they are using the designs that Fender provides and are allowed to do that, therefore are legitimate copies.

Sometimes Squiers are also faked. Because of their high price and desirability I have seen lesser Squier models labeled as JV made in Japan models. It isn't just guitars either, if money is to be made people sometimes do this with classic cars, paintings, autographs etc. The high end Squier models like the Classic Vibes are great on their own and I have proudly played them on stage. Squier has made some great guitars over the years, no need to change the decal on the headstock. Ask Jack Pearson of the Allman Brothers who proudly plays Squier guitars.

So many truths. So much BS. Great conversion. Chitty argument. It's all perspective and semantics. Changing one single tuning peg from a vintage Strat would, to some people mean it's not original Fender. And piecing together all original 'Fender' parts from various originals into one single piece could also be considered a fake. It's all perspective. The real truth is just that, say what the damn thing is and how it got modified. And in reality, you'll never really know with stamps, provenance and what your gut tells you. Some value the name, the look, the smell, the lie. Others value how it feels, plays and sounds. It's like trying to figure out somebody's favorite flavor of ice-cream. "The eye of the beholder" holds true. If you got raped by Leo in a law suit 40 years ago you'd burn a vintage 60's strat in a bon fire and enjoy it. It's a funky world we live in.

Here is the easy difference, why Squier is Squier and why Fender is Fender. Squiers are made in Asian factories not owned by Fender to spec Fender provides to the contracted factories. Indonesia and China basically at this point. MIA and MIM Fenders are made in either Corona, CA or Ensenada Mexico in factories owned and operated by Fender. They own the building, they own the land, they own the CNC machines, etc. The paychecks of the employees working there all say 'Fender' on them. THAT is the difference. I'm not calling Squiers 'fake' either, but no, they are NOT Fender, by Fender, made in asia to spec by contracted factories, by employees who are NOT on Fender's payroll vs made in north america, by Fender employees in Fender factories.
That is the big difference. I am not knocking squier, I am not calling them fake... but no, they are NOT Fenders, and no, they are not 'just as good'. They are great bargain instruments for beginners though, and some of the high end ones are pretty nice... but they are not Fenders. And as pointed out, the most common guitar fake on earth is to take a Squier and try to pass it off as a Fender.

seriously one of my biggest pet peeves. You wouldn't sell a Smart Car as a BMW, even though it's the same company. That would be fraud, unfortunately in the Squier/Fender case it's more of a matter of ignorance than malice.

Why do you hate it? They just want you to find it, looking for a Fender.

i've always almost gotten off on the fact i'll play an early Squire Silver Series Tele on stage, (rarely, as i'm a bassist) but squire have done some amazing stuff over the years, this one plays simply incredibly, though it's had 30 years to get this way lol but i still love the shock when other players pick up my "Squire" only to see how it plays...
however, even though it is essentially a fender, strait off the fender Japan production line, with a top load bridge being the only deviation from a 91 fender japan tele, if i were to change the headstock over to a fender logo, it'd 100% be a fake fender, no questios asked...

I have a Squire Affinity Tele. I slapped in a set of used MIM pickups and wow what a difference. Squires are a good platform for mods.

Fender is magical, the guitar world has twisted knickers over their instruments, amateurs and pros alike. However, i have never heard a voice as sweet as an American made Fender Stratocaster and its relatives. I do however want a guitar from every quality maker because i have listened to their songs and have been made to realize that quality in craftsmanship is a must but the differences in sound is what we chase. May the chase continue.

Granted, it's no fender, but it still beats the super cheap brands like crescent.

Hey, VW owns Rolls Royce, so all those Beetles with those phony Rolls grilles on them are real Rolls Royces by these people's criteria.

@@darrenharriss8972 You got the point :P But yeah, you could put a Porsche body kit on top of a universal VW undercarriage used for a Beetle (ps. I had a colleague that modded his Beetle that way. Looked awesome! Sounded absolutely f*king horrific with the original VW engine)

@@forkless There used to be companies that advertised in car magazines in the 60's that offered exactly that same idea in a kit. You could buy the kit, strip your bug and a few days later have a whole new car. Still felt, sound and drive like a beetle, but it looked better.
My favorites were the new hoods and things you could get to turn your bug into a Rolls Royce. Absolutely wonderful, imaginative stuff.
