Fantastic to see and hear this again. I saw the original production in the 1990s, and still remember this as one of the most sublime few minutes I ever spent in a theatre. Anne Murray's commitment in both her singing and acting, and the bitterness she evokes, is heart-stopping. Thank you.
‘Take your pleasure, / Entwined with your lover. / In the arms of death I’ll languish; / For your falsehood, I shall die. / But to purge my pain and anguish, / As a phantom (dismal and groaning) / I shall haunt you day and night’. Thanks for the upload 🌹
magnifique ! j'ai vu cet opéra à la télévision il y a quelques années et je suis heureuse de retrouver des extraits car j'ai perdu l'enregistrement ! quel dommage ! merci merci

I really couldn’t stand the staging of this opera, but Ann Murray is phenomenal. I really don’t like the direction the director made the singers take, I felt they were pushed. But, the cast is strong and they totally deliver. Loved the tempo of this aria.
Simone Talvela Why not in English? It’s Handel’s only ‘British’ opera (i.e., the only one with a British setting: Scotland), so singing it in English isn’t entirely pointless.
So wrong in this production, flapping all over the stage, mugging her way through the divine "Scherza Infida". She's no spring chicken and was a poor choice for the young Ariodante. Otherwise a very strong cast.
One of the more idiotic comments I've read for quite a while. Anyone who saw this in the theatre will remember how completely spellbinding she was. Sham on you.
@@richardwhitehouse8762 Well said. So many armchair experts on UA-cam, who complain, but can't do anything half so brilliant. Ann Murray is a very fine singer, and now Professor at the Royal college of Music. There is hope for the next generation of singers if they are mentored by her.
@@7starsxx I envy your being able to attend this superb production. Having loved Ann Murray's voice and acting in her younger days, her performance in this production disappointed me. Perhaps my expectations were the problem.
Mari Christian I’m puzzled by this, I must say Mari Christian. These were Ann Murray’s ‘younger days’. She was 43 in 1993 which is when I think this was recorded. The fantastic Joyce DiDonato sang it last year at the Carnegie Hall aged 50 and ‘age’ did not appear to be a factor in her great performance. Nor indeed was it mentioned in the brilliant reviews that AM received at the time. In re acting AM was very secure in her stagecraft always, though interpretation is also influenced by the director. In this case, David Alden has her sliding down that immense roof over the course of singing ‘Take your pleasure’. It was a white knuckle ride for the audience along with fabulous singing, playing and acting of high intensity expressing Ariodante’s extreme grief and pain at his apparent betrayal by Ginevra. One thing that is a bit challenging is the filming of this scene. The lighting in the the theatre was pretty atmospheric and dramatic but it doesn’t come over that well on UA-cam I think. This is still the case, i find, in some Met Live performances! This may have affected your ‘seeing’ of what actually wAs happening on stage..just a thought. I glad you like AM - she is one of my all time favourite opera singers and I feel so privileged to have seen her many, many times at the ENO, ROH and Wigmore Hall along with other music venues. All the best. J

In inglese no, ma comunque bravissima interprete.

Ludicrous comment. I was there too and she, was magnificent..you could have heard a pin drop in the Coli, the audience was so focused. #spellbinding
