    "I claimed this planet in the name of the Terran Dominion. I'm not gonna lose it"
    We did it, we made it to the halfway point of the campaign
    Unlike Domination, yeah this one is intended to be living hell. Gotta claw for every inch of ground and make sure Warfield never takes it back.
    Aberration:
    Damage buffed from 20 (40 vs armored) to 30 (45 vs armored)
    Armor reduced 2 -> 1
    Hp reduced 275 -> 250
    The slappy bois get to slap a lot harder. It may not sound like that much, but it makes them take 1 fewer hit to kill nearly every unit. (They can kill marines in 2 hits instead of 3, marauders/firebats in 3 hits instead of 4, almost any mech unit in 3-4 hits, etc.) They feel surprisingly good, despite their low range. (I also made them benefit the correct amount from weapon upgrades, which makes them scale better than usual).
    Old Soldiers: (The Showdown vs Warfield)
    1. Warfield attempts to retake bases and fortify areas
    2. Less patches at gold base
    3. Less minerals at expansions and a new expansion added at low ground of warfields main compound.
    4. Bonuses remove cellular reactors and psi disruptors from Dominion
    1, 2, 3 were Grant's designs. I thought it was genius to have Warfield lose the 2 highest tiers of zerg research when you destroy his zerg research facilities. (Even if cellular reactor isn't the most noticeable thing). Very happy with that bonus objective. I didn't change the nukes at all, which I'm sure there are some people surprised at, but their siege-line disruption is much more impactful with the much slower pace of the mission. I also didn't really buff Warfield's tactical ops center (iirc I think it has some more hp but otherwise unchanged). Warfield is the boss, not just his cannon at the end.

      Had an idea for a potential buff to Swarm Hosts. Burrow by default, its upgrade could be changed to:
      Faster burrowing/unburrowing and a smaller radius (both burrowed and unborrwed, inner radius untouched). Makes them more mobile and allows more to fit in a smaller area (less pathing to find areas to burrow as well).

      Nice mission.
      After seeing the swarm host at play here it is kinda trashy. The burrow by default + auto release swarm to selected area for ladder wasn't considered to consolidate units like the rest of your changes? (Muta, hydra, zergling)

      Oh Rhyme for bug fixing... Rebuilt command centers are not getting upgraded to orbital or planetary... Grant didn't bust it when it "went back" to a planetary afaik because the pickups were still there after he took it down and I doubt SCVs can build over minerals.

      I was thinking about it throughout the mission, swarm hosts are really bad for their costs, so I think the best way to compensate is to give them all three of their evo chamber upgrades. Maybe make the new upgrades-
      -Increase swarm host life or armor, just make them less likely to drop dead as soon as an enemy sees them.
      -Give them a base attack, for when they're unburrowed, or just something to do while they're getting into possition
      -Increase locust attack speed or something, maybe increase the time they stick around for, idk
      Idk if that's overtuned but it feels right for how much they cost, and how much of a burden they can be to use normally. And I certainly don't think Rhyme should go to the effort

      I'd be inclined to give them burrow by default, aside from it being basically required to stop locusts from being path blocked by their hosts, it always struck me as silly that un-upgraded campaign hosts are arguably worse than multiplayer hosts.
      Especially as the nature of single player makes Swarm Hosts Inherently worse by design. Their main role is to whittle down an opponent through attrition, where indecisive engagements will mostly only cost you free units, leaving you ahead in resources. However in single player, the AI cannon be killed through attrition because they get everything for free. They are still ok when you run out of resources or tanking for more valuable units, but they still lose a lot of their value.

    One of the things I was never really sure about was whether Warfield was fighting for valerian still, for arcturus or just generally for the dominion.
    Edit: looks like he's just fighting for the dominion... I'm honestly surprised that negotiation was never attempted by kerrigan. She just defaults to murder and never even tries diplomacy. IMO this campaign would have been better if she'd at least tried to make peaceful resolutions on Kaldir and Char and protoss / Warfield just straight up reject her. Would have given her a distinctly different identity to original QoB.

    • @vibingwiththewind2889
      @vibingwiththewind2889 2 роки тому +62

      I do really agree - especially with Kaldir.
      I think there are a lot of subtle lore implications that the Protoss came to Kaldir in the aftermath of Wings of Liberty to capture / experiment on Zerg (mostly in Shoot the Messenger), and it would be fascinating to see Kerrigan try to negotiate for peace in Harvest of Screams, the Protoss outright reject her (because they are the ZERG - you can't negotiate with a group of mindless insects - and because of the Queen of Blade's betrayal of Fenix); and then you can have Kerrigan outraged when she discovers the Protoss were experimenting on Zerg - because Kerrigan would have a respect for the Zerg as creatures, as entities (especially with the revelations on Zerus) whereas the Protoss think of them as more of a disease, and it can lead into some really fun moral dilemmas.
      But they never explore it, so it's all wasted.
      With Warfield, Kerrigan does give an ultimatum of surrender ("Leave now or I'll kill you all") - but never any chance at genuine negotiations. I would love to see a talk or some form of proper scene between Warfield and Kerrigan before she kills him. Perhaps at the start of Fire in the Sky? It would be cool to see Kerrigan and Warfield, on either side of the Bone Trench...

      How do you think it should look? Oi hello! I am commanding a Zerg army. Yeah, those creatures that destroyed Aiur and terrorised your colonies! Yeah, yeah! Me! The person that betrayed your trust couple of times already! Wanna negotiate with me?
      Why would she do it if her offer will be rejected anyways? And she knows it. That's why she does not even try. Cause there is no point in trying. That's not a scriptwriter's fault. That's a way to show that she is smart enough to not try and do something that has no chances of success.

      Heck, the original Brood War Kerrigan did negotiate, a lot even. She was one of like a dozen cerebrates, and she needed help from Mengsk, from Raynor and from Fenix to destroy another, human controlled Overmind.

I get what you're saying - I agree that the protoss and terrans she encounters wouldn't see any difference and would be hostile because of their history with her - just seems a shame that no real attempt is made as a way to emphasise her personality change.
      Broodwar Kerrigan was able to be crafty due to no-one really knowing how killing the overmind had affected her. But by the end of bw it was clear there was no good in her. For Swarm host buffs I think there are a few things that could be done. For starters, the burrow needs to be default similarly to the roach's burrow move. As for the mutations, Rapid incubation could remain the same or just have a few extra % added but that's not really needed. Pressurized glands should be a range buff maybe a simple +1 to or +2 but nor more than that. The final mutation to replace the burrow could then be extra locust spawns.
    The evolutions could do with some fiddling. Carrions should be able to attack air and ground by default otherwise they can remain the same. The creeper could also spread creep while rooted so they can always be teleporting forwards in a slow push and maybe have more tanky locusts. If carrions locusts gain attack at the cost of health creepers should either have more health, longer duration, or more armor.
    Just some ideas to hopefully benefit my favorite unit in the zerg roster.

    I agree with the swarm host buff, and I think they should be fully burrowed by default. The fact that they are so unwieldy when they don't have burrow makes burrow the only mutation to actually pick for them, in my opinion.

  • @Nurk0m0rath
    @Nurk0m0rath 2 роки тому +1

    This swarm host thing is tricky ... for years I've felt like they really need all three upgrades to be truly viable. Because crawlers suck and hosts that can't fully burrow are way too flimsy, so they really need more locusts on the field to survive attacks. But if you actually give them all three upgrades, they would basically become an auto-win button.
    Lately I've been toying with the idea of turning them into more of a carrier unit. Instead of spawning infinity timed-life locusts, they carry a fixed number of permanent ones, say eight per, and have to take time (and possibly minerals) rebuilding them. Their locusts can attack on the move but the hosts can burrow for their own protection, which lets them rally their locusts at long range as a siege weapon. Then their upgrades could involve reduced time/money costs for new locusts, higher damage or more durable locusts, or higher hp/armor for the hosts.
    But, short of a full rebuild of the unit, probably the best solution is just to make burrow default and figure out another upgrade. Burrow movement, perhaps, or locusts using the baneling explosion when they die. I mean hey, that might be one way to make good use of healing banelings.

    It always seemed to me that the swarm host, after they designed it, was a bit OP and for that they split it's abilities into 3 mutually exclusive upgrades making it bad. I feel like strain upgrades are all right as they are now, creeper or carrion, but other 3 mutations should all be on by default.
    Burrow should be by default, both for detection and pathfinding of the locusts. Locusts should last as much as it would take the next spawn of them to come into fight, so essentially what rapid incubation does and they should be able to hit both air and ground by default as well, so SH would be viable for both siege and defense. I think all those abilities wouldn't make the SH overpowered, but rather viable at all.
    New mutations could be something else to make it better at specific tasks. Like 50% more SH health for defense, 3 locust per cycle instead of 2 for offense and some mutation for utility.
    I remember back in the day when i was achivementhunting HotS on brutal. SH on crucible simply wasn't viable, it spawned way too slow so it didn't hold defense, everything else got stuck on them and once breached they always got killed by the dozen. I'm not particularly good player, but that thing i passed with roach hydra.

    The problem with balancing the swarm host is that they're intended to be an infinite value unit, specialized either for defense or siege, so if you go TOO hard on them they start to outclass every option.
    I think if you wanted to make a buff you could retool the Evo chamber upgrades to specialize one way or the other - more powerful, short-term locusts for defense, or bulkier, long-term locusts for offense, with maybe the flying locust variant that can hit air as the third option. I do agree that swarm host burrow is basically mandatory to using the swarm host in any capacity though so that can be assumed the default.
    For people who want numbers this would be my first pass estimate:
    1. Locust duration and spawn timer reduced to 15 sec (iirc default in base HotS), locusts gain +2 damage
    2. Locust duration and spawn timer increased to 25 sec (seems to be default in nightmare), locust hp increased by 25%
    3. Locusts can fly and can hit air?
    This is just a first pass untested though so numbers definitely not set.
    I don't like a lot of the suggestions other people have had for swarm hosts because they just make them all around stronger instead of carving out a specific niche for each upgrade, which I feel the Evo chamber was designed to do (regardless of if it was successful in that attempt).

    Could we make the Creeper Hosts full burrow by default and then have the flying ones not burrow by default? Then you could replace the full burrow upgrade with something else.
    Optional replacements:
    -The first attack of each locust deals extra damage and reduces the target's armor by 2. Every subsequent attack is normal.
    -Locusts apply a damage over time effect to targets.
    -Locusts reduce armor of nearby units by 2 on death.
    Also, man I wanna play this with the new Impaler. Those would definitely help crack those buildings. Practically the perfect map for them.
