I did MSQ as BLM for the first time after doing it as healer until now. I don't regret it, though I do feel DT BLM is clunkier than EW. In the end, I simply love BLM.
I have used BLM to clear MSQ from ARR to DT and I have never felt more neutered now than before. Manafont changes are great, but I cannot fathom how it was rolled out in its current state. PCT overtuning aside, BLM is just so weird to play now.
So, ISH. Once you hit 100, the optimal AoE rotation is High Fire II (to enter Astral Fire) -> Flare x2 -> Flare Star. Prior to getting Flare Star, you still use High Fire II twice after entering Astral Fire before going into Flare. There's no upper breakpoint for that Flare Star rotation, though. I just mathed out the potencies up to a million targets, and using High Fire II for more than just entering Astral Fire is a loss even at that number of targets. And that sorta makes sense. High Fire II deals 180p per target in Astral Fire 3, so 60p per target per second spent casting it. The Flare Star rotation above, going immediately into Flare after entering Astral Fire, is 76.4p per target per second spent casting at 3 target, and still 62.7p per at _a million targets,_ so there's no possible way High Fire II can be a gain as a result.
@@foop87wouldn’t even take much tbh, revert Thunder to work like it did before, have more ways to get to Flare star instead of just Fire 4, and re-add the big mama Ice phase tics alongside the ice spell restoring. That’s the bare minimum they should do. And fix AOE, High Fire 2 is only a gain on _14_ enemies. *Fourteen*

This annoys me so much. Wtf did Paradox do, mechanically, in ice? Except make the ice phase longer? Why do you want a longer Ice Phase? It's meaningless. Also Paradox is instant in fire phase and you also get Firestarter procs. Fuck me it really seems like players who played BLM before casually are ok with the changes, while all the autists just screech about completely useless shit like ice phase paradox and non-standard openers, fucking server tick mana regen and using transpose for something other than keeping your umbral shit up. Thundercloud was the best designed dot in the game. It did so much for BLM: A dot, an instant cast for movement a high damage nuke, and a weaving window. I miss it. Nowadays weaving thunderhead early feels so bad.

I haven't played the game since around mid endwalker (and even then I only got to SB msq wise, I was taking my time enjoy the content of each expansion before moving to the next one), and I just wanted to provide that context to the following fact exposition: Man did I love this video! I hardly understand what it means to black mage, but I just loved the sense of "hi I'm just sharing as I enjoy leveling BLM and not taking it too seriously"... Truly to have a video that's just about someone having a good time is such wonderful content. Thanks Larryzaur!
i will always love the fantasy of black mage and the idea of a slow casting turret mage but i blow so hard at this job. it was rough enough re-learning the job every 6-10 levels but with the update i kind of have to do it again lmaoooo. and then learn level 100 blm on top of it. something about this job stinks really bad and i think i'm finally content with it not being for me at all 😁 edit: also crazy to see so much larry videos. watched em a ton around sb when i started 🤍
Picto is now the slow casting turret mage. BLM actually has the second most mobility amongst the casters. And their casts are only of average length now. It’s a crisis of identity now. Not sure what they want to do with it anymore.

to compensate for damage calculations, black mage will now get a High Thunder Mode where they get a big beard and cast move movement-friendly spells. Please look forward to it
larry, you're keeping scathe in your hotbar. You don't know it but scathe has a hidden passive that if you have it on your hotbar, you're likely to get hit even harderer and all your casts WILL 100% fail on impact and all aoes will land on your ley lines.
As a BLM that got it to 100 then swapped over to PCT, man it's so sad how bad it feels now. I keep trying but being so restricted and hard punished for ANYTHING that breaks the standard line is really rough, the 100 ability just cements it unless you get lucky and can swift case a flare to prep it on a short line, but even that's rough. I also don't think some of the fights were tested with casters in mind, but might also just be a skill issue that I'll figure out when my casters are done.
You 2 just aren't very good obviously. I'm out damaging PCT with no problem. It's so easy to get flare star and use it, I have no idea what's confusing you.

For 1v1 targets, flare star naturally falls in line with the cooldown of swiftcast. For AoE trash pulls, triplecast your 2 regular flares, 3rd cast being flare star.
Back in Black, Not gonna sack, I cannot get my mana server ticks back. Lightning Loose, From double use, That lets me put up my big dot I've been using Umbral Soul For icy mana regen roles, Forget the flare, cause I got big goals Leylines Lost before my eyes Standing in Aoes, and not running wild
I can't believe it, there are 3 videos in a row from Larry about FFXIV this month. I think something bad is going to happen in the world. It was supposed to take a year between each video.
I know this is outdated as of this morning, but here's a quick thing that'll help the new rotation make a lot more sense: Blizzard 3 or High Blizzard II is free to cast, and grants you full Umbral Hearts. Follow that up with Umbral Soul or a nice Blizzard 4/Freeze for AOE to get yourself full MP and Umbral Souls, and you're right back into fire. Toss in a cheeky Thunder if you want. Transpose is now your oh shit I need to keep moving button. Flip over, Thunder, dodge mechanics. It's not great DPS but it's better than no DPS! Two ice spells for all the fire magic in the world is an easy trade. Oh yeah, and Flare grants 3 charges of Astral Flare... It's so different but god, it's so freakin' rewarding to take on the Arcadion bosses with the new kit.
I was a big Black Mage fan before and DT didn't change it for me. I just suffer because Picto is waaaay overpowered right now, but I'm believing in YoshiP to make things right... Eventually.

I feel I'm very lonely in this, but I've never learned to skip ice phase back then as BLM, or I did, but it was more for the funnies and never legit plays. I've always did ice phase BLM or the "intended" rotation So this "new" BLM to me plays the EXACT same as how I used to and is even better/smoother than how I used to play, so to me, BLM is sitting super comfy :)
Likewise, as someone that always played the "intended" way it feels so nice. I wish they didn't remove ice paradox or axe the extra damage on thundercloud, but fire phase is so comfy now and feels more flexible than ever with the instant fire paradox
If you guys played how it was intended, then you should still be mad about not having ice paradox, and losing the thunder procs, they took our thunder damage from us. Revolt brethren!
I main BLM on my alt and while it took a moment to adapt, I find it easier to sustain mechanically now than before. For one, while you can only use Paradox once in Astral Fire, it also 100% procs Firestarter, giving you a free instant cast of Fire III. This means that during your Astral Fire phase, you have 2 abilities that lets you refresh your Enochian timer (Paradox and Fire III). They also being instant cast means it gives you some movement leeway. The changes to Umbral Ice took me a moment to get used to but having your Umbral Hearts now means you get all your MP back on one Ice spell, including Umbral Soul. Thunder spells now being free, instant casts is nice while also dealing good damage and I swear they lifted the cast animations from Ramuh, which would make sense. Retrace is great, being able to move your Leylines feels like it should have been something we got back in the end of Shadowbringers but I'll take it nonetheless. Manafont basically refreshing your whole Astral Fire phase is amazing during dungeon pulls or applying pressure on bosses. Flare Star looks good being casted and exploding... but I feel like it is lacking in "oomph" on the sound design. It sounds a bit muted and kind of weak, especially when preceded by two Flares. I would have figured that, since Flare has that distinct explosion sound, that Flare Star would have as much or more impact. As far as balance goes, I'm not a savage or extreme raider; I do feel that it is a bit lacking in power in dungeons and against bosses. Having more mobility is welcome though, especially with the nightmare of AoEs some dungeons have. Having equivalent gear and a Picto in the party, I can't help but think that Picto can achieve better DPS with half the effort given how simple its mechanics are, even if they imply a bit more downtime with muse recasts. Still, I'm going to keep to BLM simply because of the satisfaction it provides visually and sound-wise (besides that Flare Star detail).
The issues people have with BLM changes aren't really with the standard rotation. If you played standard before, always using Blizzard 3 and Blizzard 4 and full-length Fire phases, the job is practically the same now. It's a bit annoying that Thunder is now a big loss when used for movement, low spell speed is a little uncomfortable with Paradox refreshing fire phase at the start of the GCD, and Flare Star is really punishing of mistakes, but overall it's fine. Also don't forget that Despair also refreshes the timer. Saving the Fire 3 proc for AF1 F3P (that is, leaving ice phase with an instant cast + Transpose -> instant Fire 3) is a little bit better than before, so ending fire with Despair -> Flare Star is better than using the F3 there. Pictomancer is the real issue, though. BLM could maybe use some small buffs, but PCT is outdamaging half of the melees which is just silly with their current balance philosophy.

You can Despair before Flare Star to refresh AF

If it lines up after a despair, I do all of my Xeno's + Amp if I have it, saving firestarter to refresh fire before using Flare Star

I recommend going for spell speed as a black mage it feels and hit much better when you can cast as fast you need to move for mechanics

Personally I would put Flarestar right after Despair because it refreshes astral fire that way you dont have to worry about astral fire running out.

I know this is outdated as of this morning, but here's a quick thing that'll help the new rotation make a lot more sense:
Blizzard 3 or High Blizzard II is free to cast, and grants you full Umbral Hearts. Follow that up with Umbral Soul or a nice Blizzard 4/Freeze for AOE to get yourself full MP and Umbral Souls, and you're right back into fire. Toss in a cheeky Thunder if you want.
Transpose is now your oh shit I need to keep moving button. Flip over, Thunder, dodge mechanics. It's not great DPS but it's better than no DPS!
Two ice spells for all the fire magic in the world is an easy trade.
Oh yeah, and Flare grants 3 charges of Astral Flare...
It's so different but god, it's so freakin' rewarding to take on the Arcadion bosses with the new kit.

I feel I'm very lonely in this, but I've never learned to skip ice phase back then as BLM, or I did, but it was more for the funnies and never legit plays.
I've always did ice phase BLM or the "intended" rotation
So this "new" BLM to me plays the EXACT same as how I used to and is even better/smoother than how I used to play, so to me, BLM is sitting super comfy :)
Likewise, as someone that always played the "intended" way it feels so nice. I wish they didn't remove ice paradox or axe the extra damage on thundercloud, but fire phase is so comfy now and feels more flexible than ever with the instant fire paradox
@@hydragoon513 the insta fire paradox is just a free firestarter or swift fire1 where I'm used to use those. So its great :D
If you guys played how it was intended, then you should still be mad about not having ice paradox, and losing the thunder procs, they took our thunder damage from us. Revolt brethren!

I main BLM on my alt and while it took a moment to adapt, I find it easier to sustain mechanically now than before. For one, while you can only use Paradox once in Astral Fire, it also 100% procs Firestarter, giving you a free instant cast of Fire III. This means that during your Astral Fire phase, you have 2 abilities that lets you refresh your Enochian timer (Paradox and Fire III). They also being instant cast means it gives you some movement leeway.
The changes to Umbral Ice took me a moment to get used to but having your Umbral Hearts now means you get all your MP back on one Ice spell, including Umbral Soul. Thunder spells now being free, instant casts is nice while also dealing good damage and I swear they lifted the cast animations from Ramuh, which would make sense.
Retrace is great, being able to move your Leylines feels like it should have been something we got back in the end of Shadowbringers but I'll take it nonetheless. Manafont basically refreshing your whole Astral Fire phase is amazing during dungeon pulls or applying pressure on bosses.
Flare Star looks good being casted and exploding... but I feel like it is lacking in "oomph" on the sound design. It sounds a bit muted and kind of weak, especially when preceded by two Flares. I would have figured that, since Flare has that distinct explosion sound, that Flare Star would have as much or more impact.
As far as balance goes, I'm not a savage or extreme raider; I do feel that it is a bit lacking in power in dungeons and against bosses. Having more mobility is welcome though, especially with the nightmare of AoEs some dungeons have. Having equivalent gear and a Picto in the party, I can't help but think that Picto can achieve better DPS with half the effort given how simple its mechanics are, even if they imply a bit more downtime with muse recasts.
Still, I'm going to keep to BLM simply because of the satisfaction it provides visually and sound-wise (besides that Flare Star detail).
The issues people have with BLM changes aren't really with the standard rotation. If you played standard before, always using Blizzard 3 and Blizzard 4 and full-length Fire phases, the job is practically the same now. It's a bit annoying that Thunder is now a big loss when used for movement, low spell speed is a little uncomfortable with Paradox refreshing fire phase at the start of the GCD, and Flare Star is really punishing of mistakes, but overall it's fine.
Also don't forget that Despair also refreshes the timer. Saving the Fire 3 proc for AF1 F3P (that is, leaving ice phase with an instant cast + Transpose -> instant Fire 3) is a little bit better than before, so ending fire with Despair -> Flare Star is better than using the F3 there.
Pictomancer is the real issue, though. BLM could maybe use some small buffs, but PCT is outdamaging half of the melees which is just silly with their current balance philosophy.
I hate flare star, like thats our 100 ability. Not a fan of how it works, looks, feels. Sadge
