It makes me really happy that there are people like you on youtube still. I am angered by how commercial yt in general has become and the culture that surrounds everything with clickbait etc. I hate it! So I guess this is me saying thank you. Thank you for being a light in a dimming society and for promoting the wonder of books- they are truly one of the best gifts to give and receive and are such a key, interesting marker of the progression of society; thank you
I love your book recommendations!! They always get me so excited about books and different kinds of books. I always end up a bit meh about the fact that I can't ingest a book in one go, but you always get me excited about the process of reading. Thank you!
Thank you. This is the gift guide we all needed. I simply have to say how much I appreciate your ethical views on gift giving, books, and life. Once again, thank you!
Gifting myself some of these. ✌🏻 How cool would it be if bookstores had these sort of recommendation tables that was more than “new books”.. I feel like the booksellers would definitely add new recommendation categories that we wouldn’t have thought of or would find funny or quirky or interesting. Or even if goodreads algorithm was more smarter/advanced and would do that based off previous books or information you put in. I love recommendations because more often than not it’s either a book I haven’t read or a book I have on my list and they just made me want to start reading it immediately. A slight tangent there but I love these sort of videos that you make.
Yess, perfect timing! I like how you included people who are sad with Christmas or don't like it, as I know many of those. It is very considerate. Also good tip, the Guardian Bookshop... will check that one out!
I love how you always bring a new perspective into my life. When you said that you’ve bought a book in the past and it hasn’t looked like enough so you bought a kit kat too I cackled... yesterday I did exactly that. Definitely changing my attitude towards books as gifts - guardian books here I come!!
THANK YOU! Not just for the book recommendations but your advice at the end. I like to put a card with a photo in with a book that tells the story of where I got it, why I chose it for them, etc.
I've bought the Neil gaiman "art matters" book today for a friend starting her new job in an arts centre. Went to the local bookshop and everything. It's perfect. Also wanted a book for my nephew but they didn't have it in, so it's coming for me tomorrow to collect. I'm also a big fan of second hand bookshops and charity shops because you can always find a good book!

i've been trying to ween myself off amazon and actually it's been a lot of fun to go out into the world and look for the things i want! ps: the irony of youtube running an amazon ad just before your video.... yikes
Although I would like to buy from independent bookshops, I live in Poland and there is no independent bookshops with a vast selection of english literature. Thank you for that list! It was a great help.
Another Amazon alternative is Better World Books. Lots of used books on there, but they donate books for every purchase and include a carbon neutral shipping option. Of course, supporting your local bookshop is the best option but that's where I go if I can't find a book locally.
Uuu the way you described Hotel Silence reminded me so much of a book I used to like a lot lot when I was younger - Muleum by Erlend Loe, which I still think is brilliant and from what you described it deals with very, very similar issues of those in Hotel Silence (and some of the plot points seem to also be a little eerily alike. ..) but is perhaps targeted towards a younger audience (my inner prejudices can't let me call it YA), and would also make a good Christmas gift for an angsty but mentally stable teenager
LOVE this (and you). thanks so much for reminding me of "100 hugs"! also "hotel silence" sounds amazing and your description made me choke up. maybe too much mulled wine? NEVER. xx
Love this Leena!! I know you have piles of books to get through but two writers I've read recently you might love are Joanna Walsh and Rachel Cusk, both got me obsessively buying their back catalogues! ✨
The Dream Big Little Leader book looks adooooorable! I'm always the person buying people books, and my younger cousins have gotten it this year with me sitting here like "you WILL be readers!" ahahaha. I loved seeing the books in this video because I feel like they're the sort you don't always think to pick up? I might just have to find Hotel Silence, it's sounds incredible. And on second thoughts, the Being An Adult book could come quite in handy too ahaha. No one tells you these things I swear!
This is such a great guide, Erotica for Feminists is going straight into my friend’s Christmas stockings. I’ve never clicked out of a video to buy a book quicker in my life (I came back I promise). Can’t wait for the next book vid!
I don't know whether you have done this already but please can you do a video on buying books from bookshops vs charity shops/second hand from the point of view of someone in publishing? Considering the author, publisher etc
Love this! Books are always my favourite presents to give and receive! As a side note, does anyone have any information on the ethics of book buying? It was mentioned in the video, but I'd love a little more detail on how authors get paid for their work when it's sold on Amazon or The Book Depository. I know these businesses are killing bricks and mortar bookstores, but are they also underpaying authors and publishers for their work? How does this work? When I buy a book online am I harming the author? Sorry if this is a bit of a dumb question!
I am planning on reading the Norwegian translation of Ör by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir (Hotel Silence). It won the Nordic Literature Award this year, which is a pretty huge deal for Nordic authors. Besides, I have a thing for Iceland. 😉
This video is such a wonderful help! Thank you 😊 Can you please do an updated feminist/kick ass women video? I love memoirs but there are so many to choose from. Thanks for being such an informed influencer!
Give us another one of these! What about the conservative academic?? Or is that too specific?? Hahah I just don't know what to get my dad, I want a book that I would also love to read.....so not just the memoir of a past PM that he would ask for. Do you know any good books that blend liberal and conservative ideas really well? Or something about family heritage??? Thank for another great well thought out video!
What is your opinion on Waterstones? I know you've worked there in the past, but do you think it's good or bad for the book industry? :-) loved the video
How do you feel about book depository? I deffo understand amazon but book depository has been a life saver for buying uni books and internally I'm like ah not you too (in terms of their ethical standing). Loved all the recommendations :)
Book Depository is owned by Amazon so it's essentially the same company, different branding :( But I totally get that everyone should only do what they can afford and the free shipping worldwide is a winner so it's really just knowing yourself and your situation and doing what you can where you are :) xxx
I was literally searching your channel today hoping you had made this exact video and now you have it's a christmas MIRACLE

MAKE 👏 MORE 👏 BOOK 👏 VIDEOS 👏 you’re so good at it 💛
This is exactly the gift guide I was looking for! Thank you so much. Happy Holidays 💌
WOo hope it helps!
You have sold Hotel Silence to me - it sounds beautiful
I love your book recommendations!! They always get me so excited about books and different kinds of books. I always end up a bit meh about the fact that I can't ingest a book in one go, but you always get me excited about the process of reading. Thank you!
This is the loveliest comment, thank you so much. Saving this somewhere for a rainy day x
I just bought my mum 2 books for her birthday = best son ever!
I just paused you to go and buy Hotel Silence and December Stories (for myself from myself)! 👍🏻😊
Thank you. This is the gift guide we all needed. I simply have to say how much I appreciate your ethical views on gift giving, books, and life. Once again, thank you!

DESPERATE to read Hotel Silence. Maybe a gift to myself?

I got so excited when I saw Chris Riddell, hands down favourite illustrator ever.
I'm off to college in a few months and will definitely pick up Art matters and Being an Adult. Thanks, Leena!!
Thank you for the recommendations. Also the bit about buying independently, because I didn’t realise how important it is
THANK YOU! Not just for the book recommendations but your advice at the end. I like to put a card with a photo in with a book that tells the story of where I got it, why I chose it for them, etc.
Watched this with the intention of buying books for others but 100% think I need all these books myself 😂 💕

Yes ! Needed this. Your reasons for suggesting the books make me want all of them for myself. As usual everyone is getting books this year.

eh i don't think there exists an english translation though:(

Hotel Silence sounds beautiful! Sounds similar to A Man Called Ove which I also thought was really sweet
loved this vid leena! hotel silence seems like it needs 2 be a christmas present from me to me this year
Love this Leena!! I know you have piles of books to get through but two writers I've read recently you might love are Joanna Walsh and Rachel Cusk, both got me obsessively buying their back catalogues! ✨
Love this! So many interesting books- I may have to purchase a few for myself (as well as gifts).

I need to read Hotel Silence, so glad you recommended it because I hadn't heard of it before.
Hotel Silence looks absolutely fantastic! I loved your video 😊
I don't know whether you have done this already but please can you do a video on buying books from bookshops vs charity shops/second hand from the point of view of someone in publishing? Considering the author, publisher etc
So cool ❤❤❤
Hotel Silence and Neil Gaiman's essays are definitely on my to-read-list
those were LOVELY suggestions!
This is so great! (Also I might buy my partner the 100 hugs book!!)

I think books ARE an experience!
I really want all these books for myself 😂
Great video idea!
usually hate christmas gift guides because they're simply capitalist, boring, generic bullshit; but this is MARVELLOUS
i love your content!
You saved me! Thank you
This video is such a wonderful help! Thank you 😊

Would you review my book? It's a unique super-genre that I think could be a game changer.
love the recommendations! but the stunning books behind you were so distracting, would love to know the titles.
Is the adulting book very specific to the UK? I want to get it for someone who doesn't live in the UK
What is your opinion on Waterstones? I know you've worked there in the past, but do you think it's good or bad for the book industry? :-) loved the video

WHAT BOOK SHOULD I BUY FOR MY DAD
yeeeet
I feel I need being an adult
I'd shop at independent book stores but most of them aren't wheelchair accessible so I can't...
Depending on where you are, Nomad Books in Fulham in London is a lovely bookstore which is accessible!
always the best recommendations. a l w a y s
If you're wondering when I clicked the thumbs up button, it was 100% at "I'm allergic to the capitalist machine".
Is it possible to follow you on goodreads? :)
Immediately bought 100 hugs for my nephew I don't care that he's a baby
december stories 1 looks awesome! it looks perfect for my very anti-christmas boyfriend
