- From space, the difference between North and South Korea is drastic. In video released by NASA that was taken from the International Space Station, North Korea shows up as a large dark spot, while South Korea is much brighter.

This puts it behind Russia which has a life expectancy of 70 years and Ukraine with a life expectancy of 71 years. But it is way ahead of most sub-saharan countries which have life expectancies in the fifties. South Africa 61. Haiti 63. Iraq 69, Afghanistan 60.

Its 72 years in 2020 and DPRK is 19th in Asia of life expectancy, but the fact that 1 in 1000 americans get k*lled by a gun, its hard to take WHO serious when america is number one in life expectancy with 109 years avg.

A lot of those lights are street lights, traffic lights, night time traffic to move supplies and deliveries. The harbors have to stay lit as some jobs at sea can only be done in the evening. Security has to be provided at many buildings. Airlines need to be able to see strucfures of certain heights and airfields.
Even more than that though, the ability to NOT be beholden to daylight for our schedules is a massive economic boon, especially for the poorest among us. There's been multiple studies on energy poverty - the inability to have light a night being a major feature - and it is universally linked with the worst kind of destitution.
By no means whatsoever is there some meaningful silver ligning to North Korea's situation.
