  • As a South Asian growing up in Texas, WNYC's Arun Venugopal never thought twice about eating with his hands at home, but in public in front of his friends and strangers alike, it was a different story. Arun hits Wall Street to see if this taboo of his childhood is still relevant in NYC today. Do you have a custom you do only at home? A tradition you wouldn't show strangers? Reminds me of the first time I was invited to eat at my Indian friends house, it was both shocking and amazing. The smell of the masala hitting the hot oil and the chocking fumes it created, the delicious vegetarian food, the eating with the hand, the curry colored vegetables, the smells, the sounds I was only 14 but it left a deep imprint in me, to this day I cook Indian food though I still can't eat with my hands, even though half of the world still does it. Hope to over come this one day

    Eating with your hands and a tortilla was very customary growing up in a Mexican family.

    Well narrated, explained in context and easy to identify with. I am a South Indian, vegetarian Brahmin. I do eat pizza with my hand and even when alone, I eat all other food with utensils. When I go to India, I eat with my hand but my younger relatives there have started using utensils. A tea spoon is the commonest utensil in Indian household.
    I like Ethiopian food; the cuisine has vegetarian food and it's eaten in a communal setting, with fingers and no utensils. In NYC, I have seen all diners at Ethiopian restaurants eating with their fingers with no hesitation.
    Self consciousness is created by the self. I've been an American for 46 years but people refer tom me as an "Indian" doctor. It's a way to identify me; not to marginalize me. This video tells people to be comfortable with their cultural roots and have a ready explanation for the cultural habits. Regarding using ones fingers, my dad used to say "only I can use my fingers and I wash them thoroughly before and after eating".

      How do you know someone's a South Indian Brahmin? It's the first thing they'll tell you. Even after they have been living in another country for 46 years, a country where their high caste means nothing to the vast majority of people, and a country where most find such caste distinctions revolting.

      I'm not boasting; that's who I am. I'm no better than anyone nor am I worse. Please don't make any assumptions about me and if you do, you would be wrong on every count. Just take it easy and eat whatever you eat in any manner you like and enjoy it.

      ThatsSoRavin But a country where racial distinctions still mean something, right?...going by the disproportionate incarceration of blacks & still ongoing racism against colored people in the US. Before pointing out bigotry in others, may be you should see if you are being hypocritical.

    • @ThatsSoRavin
      @ThatsSoRavin 10 років тому

      Ms Sandhu As a "colored" citizen of the US, I know first hand how far my country has come in terms of racial equality and how far we still have to go. But, I am also a person of Indian descent, and every Brahmin I've met has made it a point to tell me his/her caste. This video is about how Indian people eat, not how Brahmins eat or vegetarians eat. GKrishnametube described how he/she is thought of by his patients as their "Indian" doctor, not their "Brahmin" doctor. So I am merely pointing out that mentioning caste is irrelevant and serves only to separate oneself when there is no reason to.

    • @MsSandhu9
      @MsSandhu9 10 років тому

      ThatsSoRavin I agree with you that he shouldn't have pointed out his caste but you talked about his 'caste-awareness' as something that Americans think as 'revolting'. Who cares what Americans think when many of them are themselves racist but are very quick to point out casteism or other 'evils' in other cultures? Not only that reeks of hypocrisy, there is racist element behind degrading other cultures for bigotries that they themselves haven't gotten rid of. GKrishnametube shouldn't have mentioned his caste (especially when its no way related to the subject of this video). He shouldn't mention it because casteism is wrong, irrespective of what Americans think about it.

    I discovered this in my own home, eating curry. Instead of opting to eat it with a fork as I usually did, I first used my naan to pick up my curry sauce and ate small pieces of my naan. Then, I infused a bit of curry with my rice and ate it that way. It was absolutely delicious. A lot better than with a fork.

    The only reason why I don't eat Indian food with my hands in public is because of the mess it causes. This would probably not happen with other cuisines but because of all the various liquids and colorful spices used in Indian food, it's very easy to stain your newly bought suit or look like a toddler with food all over on the table when eating. At home however it's a different story.

    Haha! I have vivid childhood memories of mom forcefeeding me a ball of food (that was definitely the right size for an adult, but too much for a kid) if I was being a little stubborn jerk during dinner time. Kind of violating and also extremely delicious is exactly what it was! Couldn't really be that mad for being put in my place. Genius really..

    I'm so sick and tired if being insta blocked when I describe the way we eat bbq on posts like this and in support of your culture. That's so damned disturbing and disappointing on youtubes part. It is beyond racist.

    Why would you use fork or a chopstick to eat RICE??

  • @MsSandhu9
    @MsSandhu9 10 років тому

    I hate it when foreign born-bred Indians, who don't have a clue about cultural & regional variations within India, generalise Indian practices. Eating rice with hands is mostly South Indian cultural practice. In North India, we always used spoons (not forks) for eating rice & curry, only chapati/naan/roti is eaten with hands & this is how my parents ate, my grandparents & generations before that, yes, even at home. Not saying there is anything wrong with eating rice with hands. I tried it & its true the food tastes better because you don't get to taste the metal in your mouth. But it took me a long time to finish my food since I am so used to spoon.

      I hate it when Indian-born Indians generalize us foreign-born/bred Indians as clueless about cultural and regional variations within India. Many of us are fully aware of and are interested in various cultures of the different parts of India. Eating rice with hands is also common in Eastern India, too, not just the South.

    • @MsSandhu9
      @MsSandhu9 10 років тому

      ThatsSoRavin Still, in terms of total population, number of Indians who eat rice with spoon probably outnumber those who eat with their hands. In this video the guy talks as if ALL Indians do this. Either he doesn't know the reality himself or didn't bother clarifying this.

    • @ThatsSoRavin
      @ThatsSoRavin 10 років тому

      Ms Sandhu In the majority of cultures in South, East, and North-East India for which rice is the daily staple, rice is eaten by hand. For the most part in North India, where bread is the staple and rice is more of an occasional food, the spoon is used. For rice eaters, this is how it's done. I don't see how much more needs to be clarified.
      If we have to split hairs this much then I should complain every time a Hindi speaker equates Bollywood with the entire cinema of India, because for me, my Indian cinema is Tollywood.

    • @MsSandhu9
      @MsSandhu9 10 років тому

      ThatsSoRavin Your cinema is Tamilian & it does have it's own identity & following. And it also makes high quality films. If this subject comes across, I, for one, do tell people that Bombay Film Industry isn't the only one in India & that most states in India have their own regional film industry.

    • @ThatsSoRavin
      @ThatsSoRavin 10 років тому

      Ms Sandhu Sorry, but Tollywood is the cinema of WB named after the Tollygunge area of Kolkata and was the first to use the "ollywood" name in India. Kollywood is the Tamil film industry.
