Such a great video, and such great lessons. I transitioned from classical to jazz when I was around 16... Though I still love playing classical music. I think the last answer hit the nail on the head - there shouldn't be any distinctions, all music comes from the same place. Speaking about the late Chick Corea, this is what he was all about, as well as the entire late 20th century tradition of jazz fusion - blending everything together. Great lesson, I will go back and watch it again sometime for sure, thank you to tonebase for excellent content as usual and for diversifying and not being shy of jazz!

Great video. Two things would be nice to emphasize. The importance of rhythm in Jazz. Understanding it is very important. Also realizing that people like Chopin or Bach were improvisers. Today every classical musician has to play in so many styles that they have no chance to learn the language of one style properly and therefore don’t learn improvising except some Organist’s who partially can improvise over the standards of the past (Chorals). It always struck me how little harmonic awareness classical performer musician has. I also think a classical musician has the complex of the written note. It’s sacrilegious to change it. Funny that they constantly bend and change rhythm, partially also improvise with dynamics an a lot with articulation. The holiness of the written note might be the reason for blocking improvisation on pitches in classic.
You might have to understand that improvisations are not really necessary in classical music now because there is quite an insurmountable number of classical pieces that performers are trying to keep alive for hundreds of years. There are a few very good classical music improvisers, but for the most part, improvising notes is not a necessity for a classical performer.
you dont improvise shakespear by adding garbage , thats why you dont improvise in classical music. change note in beethoven or chopin is like adding emoji to consititution. jazz is totally different than classical stuff hence the freedom of improvising .

@@usernamehyt Sorry, but i have the feeling, you misunderstand the notion of improvising and you miss the point entirely. I try to explain your wrong path. Consequently You also don’t add any „Garbage“ to a recorded Charlie Parker solo for example.
??? I'm not sure if this was supposed to be ironic but you clearly don't 'get' classical music in the way you seem to think classical musicians don't 'get' jazz.
How do you think it would sound if a string section of 60 just improv'd based on a chord chart? Now expand that to an entire 100+ piece orchestra.
Orchestration doesn't have volume knobs either, so when you've carefully balanced a chord texture across the sections that would go away entirely if one trombone decided to double another note. Or now all of a sudden you can't hear the flute because the 2nd oboe decided to double the melody instead of reinforcing the flute at a lower register, while also creating a nasty doubling due to intonation differences between the two oboes. Likewise now you destroyed the faux texture combining flute and oboe so it doesn't blend with the clarinet and violas, you just have a weak breathy flute and a honky tonk oboe a2 and then clarinet and violas being a warm and hairy tone beneath it.
Maybe one day you'll stop being pretentious and learn to appreciate the fact that you can learn from other disciplines, instead of putting them down for simply being a different set of goals and uses. Maybe assume that YOU don't understand their craft and grow from it.

Practicing Jazz is easy. Just listen to A LOT Jazz and start Improvising over it.
That is not how to practice Jazz. That’s the equivalent of blindfolding yourself and shooting a dart and hoping you hit the bullseye.
@@pjbpiano First of all, it was not meant completly seriously. And second, you can indeed learn Jazz that way. Perhaps it will take you longer, but that is the only way of feeling the Jazz and beeing able to not just play down scales and licks, but actually pruduce an Improvisation skill which is unique.
@@nimagarthe no. You cannot learn that way. The guy in the video is actually teach one right way to learn jazz and jazz improvisation. I just had to put it there before people who want to learn jazz see what you wrote and think they can actually learn jazz by just listening to a lot of jazz and then start improvising over it.
@@pjbpiano haha. If you thing. At least that is how I learned it and it got me into University. Obviously thare is way more to learn but still, you cant get a feel of swing and jazz harmony, without listening to A LOT of Jazz. It is not like classical music where you learn the technique and than play the notes. You cant force it. Also notice that thare is a difference between learning and practicing.

Unfortunately, I've never been able to really enjoy Jazz-Music... it just doesn't really cause any emotional resonance inside of me. It's a shame, really. There's no doubt that it's a fascinating style of music.
Either way, I've REALLY enjoyed this video! Despite not playing Jazz myself, there's still a lot to learn from Jeremy's instructions and tricks! Especially the different scales were fascinating!

Maybe go listen to some live smooth jazz (Contemporary smooth jazz), and feel the groove, bass and Rhythm and the various solo expressions, as a musician it may begin to intrigue you more.
