---+ Why is an assassin bug called an assassin bug?
Likely because it impales its insect and arachnid victims with its pointy mouthparts.
---+ Is an assassin bug the same thing as a kissing bug?
No. Assassin bugs and kissing bugs are relatives, but they’re different from each other. They’re both part of a large family of insects called reduviids, known as the “assassin bug” family, hence part of the confusion. Kissing bugs and assassin bugs look similar to each other in that they have long mouthparts that they keep folded under their head when they’re not using them.
But they’re different from each other in their feeding habits. Assassin bugs, which are found around the world, live on plants and feed mainly on insects, for example, moth caterpillars and beetles and beetle larvae.
Kissing bugs make up a group of 150 species known as triatomines and found mainly in the Americas. Kissing bugs feed on the blood of humans, as well as that of many other domestic and wild mammals and birds. These insects can transmit a parasite through their feces that causes Chagas disease. The parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, may live inside the body for many years without causing health problems, but it damages the heart and digestive systems of 20% to 30% of infected people and can be deadly.
Even though its feces can make you sick, the bite of a kissing bug is usually painless, since the parasite injects chemicals so that it can feed undisturbed for several minutes. But a kissing bug’s bite can sometimes cause anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that leads to shortness of breath, shock and death, if left unattended. An assassin bug’s stab, if you’re unlucky enough to step on one or you pick one up by mistake, will hurt. And both assassin bug and kissing bug bites can be itchy.
---+ What are an assassin bug’s mouthparts called?
Assassin bugs’ mouthparts are often referred to as the rostrum or beak.
---+ Is there anything good about the assassin bug?
Yes! Assassin bugs can help control agricultural and garden pests.

I can tell Laura's grinning everytime she does it in character. 🤣
Me too 😆
You can hear her cheeriness wants to break through in some lines
I love her voice she’s amazing!!!
As happy Sherlock Holmes or smiley Moriarty?
Hahahahaha yeah
@@men_del12 I have to admit. When I was hearing the Moriarty voice she did I almost thought it was a new voice actor. I was going to throw a fit and march in a picket line. But then I looked at the credits and realized it WAS still Laura and everything was right in the world again.
She strolled into my office like a warm summer breeze and I knew she would be trouble “you’ve got to help us detective, it’s the assassin bug, he killed my husband” I swore I would never return to the tarweed but paying jobs were hard enough to come by these days.
I see you’ve watched plenty of old time detective shows. 😂

@@livelybubbs6242 Insecticide.
The way she stays in character :o). I think this is my favorite episode of the show.
Wonderful! We all loved making this episode. So much fun and such amazing creatures. We have an episode in production right now on an assassin bug relative called the Kissing Bug BUT DON"T TELL ANYONE
MIss gurl?
@@KQEDDeepLook ummm did you mean to post that in a public comment section?
;->
@@KQEDDeepLook We don't kiss and tell :X
I recommend this channel to my teacher and now she always make us watch at least 1 of these videos daily lol m loving it.
That is awesome! #inspo
Ikr it's a very nicely illustrated educational channel.
Oh man, has to be one of the fun class
The big caterpillar smacking the assassin bug away with it's head was brutal.
that was the best part.
the music in the background is what really made the clip
We have Seth Samuel, our composer, to thank! Every Deep Look episode has an original music score.
that was my favorite part especially with the added sound effects

I love this content! It’s so interesting! Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
@@KQEDDeepLook your channel is great
Love how this video is portrayed like a crime documentary. Good work Laura.
Hey Laura and the deep look production team, amazing video especially the narration and storytelling! Hope to see more from this channel. Love from Malaysia Fans!
this is gonna sound weird, but can we get a whole series of law and order: BUG ?
The music, the voice over, the cut scenes. This is done perfectly
Seth Samuel's work on the scores for this series is totally genius
love the subtle change of cadence to the narration for this episode!! haha
Omg the starting itself
It feels like I am into a mystery solving case !(mentioning zombies wow)
Edit : Thank you for this amazing video
As they say, "Prepare for, unforseen consequences."
Now I want an "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank"-style whodunnit movie produced by KQED.
i have to say the dynamic range on this audio was awesome
Truly an amazing video
Thank you Leonardo!
@@KQEDDeepLook aren't assassin bugs also called kissing bugs and they bite humans too???
Love the video! But the insect at 1:26 is definitely a webspinner, not a snakefly. You can see the enlarged tarsal segments.
Definitely the best narration yet. 😂💯
Great content, production, sounds effects and narration. Keep up the good work
Crime footage hahaha like what y'all did. That assassin bug doesn't play around, it means business. Loved it 😁 keep up the great content!!☺
Will do RJ!
This guy is a peak evolution meme. Your food grew fangs that let them fight back? Okay, just grow a longer fang they can't even touch.
Cattapillars that eat flowers:*exists*
Assassin bug: *IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE*
love the music, sound effects and narration, thanks detective laura!
You're very welcome!
Bruh, this video really puts it into perspective how lowkey nature can be. While you're taking in the beautiful scene and enjoying the flowers, you could also by in the middle of a war and don't even know it 😂
0:25
Did anyone else hear “outlet mall” when she said “owlet moth”?
Brilliant narration!
Amazing one, loved the whole "crime/detective" narrative.
The results are very clear and completely satisfying.
That's not an assassin bug. It's a delivery boy bug. Sent by grocery clerk bugs to collect the bill.
"Good work 47. The money has been wired to your account." -Diana Tarweed
I used to catch dozens of wheel bug nymphs in a mason jar and toss in moths that came to the porch light. They are just diabolical little hunters!
That scream kind of a sound thou. That caught me off guard not gonna lie.
The relationships in nature are so fascinating. Your videos are simply the best, keep it up!
Your narration is absolutely awesome. Wow!
I really appreciate the creative work you guys put into narrative strategies that make empirical observations about fascinating correlations between fauna and flora more digestible ;)
The playful investigative tone here is spot on in my humble opinion.
Thank you!
This is my first episode and I love the narrative! I'm hooked
2:32 me when my sister tries to steal the last fry:
Assassin Bugs are one of those arthropods you don't really hear much about, but they are really quite interesting.
Great detective voice! And as always, a top notch production!
the narration was so spot on. well done
Love the way she talks for this one!
The defence by caterpillar against assassin bug was amazing🤩
That caterpillar said not today get away from me (throws head) 😂
A switch blade is spring loaded and moves in and out of the handle at the press of a SWITCH. This would have been better compared to a butterfly blade, because it would swing out like a wing and it would have been another pun.
Love the narrative style for this video. So funny and also entertaining
Your channel is gold 👍☺️
If she isn’t the one solving my murder I’m not going
💀😭🤣 idk who tf you are but this video was absolutely great your voice had me hooked 💀💀 you fasho earned a follower
very mysterious detective vibe
I really like this video simply because of the voiceover and the background score, it’s just 👌 perfect
I really love the narration on this one! Love to see it again in a future video! Big fan of the channel, keep up the amazing work!
Tarweed got those tricones on and poppin lol
She sounds like a prosecutor that tries defending the eaten bug filing the case to that assassin bug.
2:16 Awww, how thought of them
Leaving food along side the graveyard.. How sweet... 😂😂😂
Caterpillar: you really think you can eat me?
Assassin bug: I'm leaving with sum. I'm from round the way, I'm LEAVING with sum👀
My sister watched this video with me, and probably only because she saw the caterpillar head-butting the assassin bug.
what a great video for a birthday gift!
hehe its posted on my bday. thanks deeplook, I love and adore your content!!
Happy birthday!
These bug videos always make my day better
Funny enough, I saw a vid a couple days ago very similar to this. The plant was different, a carnivorous one, although it didn't eat the bugs that it trapped. The plant had assassin bugs that stayed on them, waiting for the bugs to get stuck and then they ate them, pretty much just how this vid went, but the reason the plant trapped bugs for the assassins to eat was because the plant actually ate the assassins poop. Basically the plants helped the assassins eat so they'd poop on the plant, thus feeding the plant.
Neat!
Really creative narration. Got me laughing. 😆
You want aliens, look no further than the bug kingdom. Even their world would be alien like. That dew plant is nothing to the size of you, but to the victim bug crawling around minding it's business, and where the assassin is hiding, it's a whole other world.
It makes me happy knowing I never got hit like this by a caterpillar but instead they just try to crawl on my finger 😂 glad I didn’t piss y’all off 😂
Maybe a more deeper look on how the assassination happens would've made it a bit more interesting..☹️ Still an amazing presentation
You should do a video on the spotted lantern flies that became invasive on the east coast
The assassin bug never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Hey, the caterpillars were asking for it!
That caterpillar had a nice check left hook
laura is literally an icon staying in character
The Tarweeds also get nutrients from the assassin bug's poop, it's much more energy efficient to consume that the entire insect corpse!
it is so weird i just saw an army of this things on a tree in the park near me
-Ahhh yess a Deep look into some good old logic!
No because why am I so attracted to her voice 😭💖
It's giant nose knife looks just like the brain bugs little mouth from Starship Troopers.
Would you like to know more?
Give it 2 days and I'll entirely forget this video existed. So I can unsee it.
"Let's review that crime footage again, shall we?" LoL
I like the 1920s detective voice
These things are amazing for any garden. Them and their relatives the wheelbug
Found an assassin bug here in Central Louisiana... never saw one before that. It looked like a large stink bug at first, but with further examination I was like "Hey I've seen this on Discovery Channel before!!!" LOL still though it kinda frwaks me out. I hope they remain rare.
Oooh! I’ve been waiting for the tarweed one! Very mysterious!
Great narration 👏👏👏
Incredible! Great footage and story.
hahah this is a great episode. Thanks for all great work!
Glad you enjoyed it Collin!
Love the detective's voice and the Assassin Bug committing premeditated murder, then devouring it's prey. I love how God makes creatures perfect for where they live and to do what they do.
I swear the nature is a never ending battlefield, I'm glad I am a human😅
bro i was shocked when this started and i didnt hear David Attenborough lol
Good job on the commentary! really Detective like!
the voice feels so serious like she saving some sort of case XD
I saw an assassin bug slurping up a small green wasp on a sunflower a little while ago. It was really neat!
it was just another rainy day, then.... she walked in...
I really thought it was someone else and that they tried to pull a switcheroo on us and hope we wouldn't notice. 😂
Personally I prefer normal Laura but this is impressive 😄
This was fun!
Wish you had some mugshot graphics for the "culprits"
0:37 that bug name litterally sounds like a harry potter spell
I love these videos.
Is this a different narrator? Btw loved the episode💖
You guys should keep one of those insects for me to look under the microscope!
Who done it? Of course it was the ASSASSIN bug!
"crime footage" like this whole thing isn't shot in a control room, and everything is being put where they want
Actually most of this was shot out in the field.
