It's not really that ancient. Widely spread in 17th century due to little ice age. Europeans used with furs to endure but Korean used Ondol instead. The problem was it cost abundant amounts wood resources needed. Before Joseon dynasty has fallen by imperial Japan, there were almost no woods left for firewoods.

These are skills passed down from tradesman to apprentice over the years. Funneling hot gases from wood fires threw mazes under the floor is an ancient technique that still alive and well to this day, as is Lincoln Log style joinery... there's no lost art here, just a lost UA-cam commenter who apparently hasn't been in the right social circles to be exposed to these techniques. If your interested in this stuff, find a location in your country that has regular snow and log cabins and you will see whole houses built like this mud room... lots of fancy toung and grove type joints and trench heating. Or you can just watch video of people making cabins right here on UA-cam. Yes some are simpler than others, that's just the nature of houses in general.

    • @justplaintommy63
      @justplaintommy63 2 роки тому +4

@@binaryglitch64 yes, they are passed down, that' how I learned as much as I know. what I was trying to say is, years ago where I come from basic trade skills were introduced in schools to young minds. We don't do that anymore and I feel like it's the greatest shame in my country. I could be lost, but I found my way to men and women like this who share tiny bits of what they know. I'm nearly 60 years old and I know the one constant in life is you learn something new every day. So I'll just say thanks for teaching me something new, and go back to watching how great the art of carpentry really is on this man's youtube page ;)

Work that can't be off-shored, good, well paying with benefits, even retirement plans, so what's not to like. Girls can do these jobs as well. Carpenters, electricians, stationary engineers (cranes, heavy equipment operators, etc,) sheet metal, controls, plumbers and pipefitters, to name a few. You have work, and a paycheck, while you learn, plus you get regular raises. After 3, 4 or 5 yrs, you are earning a fair wage.

@@crowleythedemoncat I wouldn't blame any ONE political party, I was in a union for years. Any lacking or shift in the union workforce can be traced back to the work ethic that the people of this country bring to the job. Start with that before you play that political card. Politicians are the boogie men people use to get out of doing hard labor.

Wood wood you are such a very hard working man + an honorable one + you take so much pride in yourself and what you do in life. I loved watching your skills in building it from start to finish. Do you keep tract of the hours or days - weeks that this project took you? If so would to share even approximately how long if you don’t mind? I am 76 years old and I live in America and from what I have seen and witnessed in your country workers like yourself still take pride in life doing things the right way like we used to back 50 - 60 years ago because we were proud of what we did and had the pride to do things the right way. If we go back 100 - 150 years back in time the way you cut the joints and hand fit everything is how it was done also. Sure you use some power tools but you also use the old ways combined to do things the right way. Please forgive my long comment and if I didn’t make much sense forgive me I am working on the project my body needs worked on my brain tumor and it doesn’t look like I have much time left to finish other things either. From an 80 yr old to Toy: I remember my grandfather building a cottage in a manner similar to this though some nails were used in places. The old-timers had such a pride of workmanship and built for centuries of use. That things are now done “slap-dash” and “good enough” is indicative of the many things lost in our society.

Back in the 80's it was common to hear the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from leaking old homes heated by that system but if you ever experienced Korean winters it can be brutal. A well maintained system can keep those floors nice and toasty.

Korea's Ondol began to use anthracite-based fuels in the 1950s, and carbon monoxide poisoning began to occur.
Such accidents do not happen in the past when traditional firewood was used.

What an interesting system. Reminds of antique roman heating systems, but they were built under entire house's floor.
    Nicely done.

I'd love to see someone recreate/build a legitimate full sized Roman style house 😳
I'm super curious about the stochiemetry and airflow of those types of under-floor heating systems

@@jaymethodus3421 lolz...try cleaning the soot out of a roman system--or get rats! His method has places to block off vermin and to drain if flooded--very elegant system! The roman system had a floor of brick, is only about 18" in height. Apparently the Ondol often uses clay pipes but here he uses bricks to support basalt stone slabs. Someone else commented the number of people dying from CO poisoning in Korea. That sounds like the gaps were no longer sealed and the house was also poorly ventilated. Makes sense, these systems should last 100's of years without maintenance, so generations later would not know how to check.
