This video gave me flashbacks to living in Niigata prefecture and having a car full of cultists pull over on the side of a busy road to try and get me to go with them. Another honourable mention goes to the guy I went on a date with from a dating app who after a lovely dinner proceeded to pull out a folder of material and try his best to recruit me. If it's the same folks in Joetsu as Nagaoka then it's the Nichiren/Soka Gakkai cult. They have a large headquarters in Nagaoka City.

Man it reminds me of my times as a uni student in Japan so many damn different cults trying to recruit uni kids. Whilst this could be like happy science the fact is there’s so many different cults there.
Not Japan, but I live in a rural area & my friends & I walked up to a small wooden cabin that wound up being a cult by the side of the road. Their leader Adi dam, died a little over a decade ago in Fiji. Then, I recently found out there is ANOTHER cult a few miles from me.... threw me for a loop.
On the subject of Japan cult stories, here goes! On a day off, a Japanese man (let’s call him Taka) approached me in Akiba カルチャーズ Zone building and asked if I liked anime and gaming. Taka invited me to hang out sometime and we later met outside a Mizuho bank building in Ikebukuro with his friend. His friend insisted on driving us to Taka’s "favourite temple", which made me uncomfortable, so I suggested going for coffee instead. Taka’s friend said OK and drove off. Taka then suggested we take the train to Tokiwadai station, buy some coffee on the way and walk to his "favourite park". During the ride he would ask me very detailed questions like my address in Japan, my family members names, along with sprinkling in what’s my favourite fighting game. When we arrived, the dude that I declined the ride from was sitting in the park waiting for us with some paper in his hand. Long story short, this park was right next a temple for Kenshokai: a buddhist religious cult prevalent in Japan. They then presented me with a paper detailing their religious leader's plan to save humanity and asked me to go pray at their temple, but I declined. Taka’s friend was pissed! On my way back to station, a woman from their temple waited for me inside the station near the vending machines. She followed me onto the platform and threatened me if I didn't go back and pray. This was a creepy experience for me, but apparently, it's a common tactic used by some religious followers. Weirdest shit ever but made for a decent story at dinner hahaha.
Has somebody already showed this clip to Geoff (Mother's Basement)? Bet he would be interested in this behind-the-scenes of the cult anime he has a few videos about.
It was most likely the Nichiren/Soka Gakkai nutters. They have a strong presence in Niigata prefecture. Any foreigner that's lived there has been approached at some point.
@@inflikktionHe did mention El Cantare. There’s no way that’s buddhism. Also, I never considered Nichiren to be a cult. Of course that depends on your definition of a cult but Nichiren Buddhism is quite old. Soka Gakkai on the other hand...
I think it was Sazae-san which, fun fact, is the longest-running anime series ever at *over 7,000 episodes* and is still running and having new episodes to this day.
Ohh they are talking about that happiness cult or whatever it is ...they have a fair community in India...they were officially dubbed in Hindi and a song by a famous singer
I went to a free viewing of "The Laws of the Universe" which was also a cult-created Japanese anime. I was handed a leaflet at a japanese rock show, promoting the movie. Just like Pete said, there were all these religious figures in the anime, as well as historical ones. Einstein, Hitler, Edison, I think even George Washington or some shit. It was wild propaganda.
sounds morally bankrupt ngl, but I guess to be fair I wanna get into the packinko world in Japan. Not playing it, but making machines and games for em So maybe I'm a hypocrite i dunno
Pete just be doing side quests
Nice 💪
dude's living his life like a Yakuza game
Best comment!
(I haven't seen the rest, but hey 😂)
Pete is fucking hilarious!!!🤣🤣🤣
He's probably the closest thing to a white Gintama with all his odd jobs and humor 🤣
that Gintama grindset
Holy shit he's definitely on the Yorozuya grindset 😂😂😂
thats such an accurate comparaison hhhhh
I thought exactly!
actually Unification church is from SouthK0rea.
Pete is straight up playing Yakuza IRL with all these wild side gigs he's done lmao

It’s pretty messed up that cults pay voice actors better than some bigger companies would, like you would have thought the opposite
Like that small indie company that made a recent release of doom?
Love how he had to channel his inner Zhang Jiao to convince a cult that he's channeling the voice of multiple gods.
Now I kinda wanna hear him do the "you flaming idiots!!" scene
*Yellow Storm intensifies*
Hey to voice a cult leader, you really gotta get into the character y'know?
That was the first thing that came to mind too lol man, I kinda want to play some ps2 dw
"...and it was when I was so young, man. And um...well, I was thirty......one"
the timing on this was PERFECT
I think this is the least amount of time I've heard the Trash Taste boys speak on their own show. Once you wind Pete up he just keeps going.😊
Pete is an incredible storyteller, one of the best guests I've seen on this
and now he's won the best storyteller awarddd
I've heard of this cult. Isn't that the one that produced those horribly bonkers anime? I think they were called Happy Sience or something like that.
Yup. That’s the one.
never heard of them making an anime
Mothers Basement did a roast of there anime movies. It’s bonkers!
Yuri Lowenthal also did dubs for there animes
@@Gassy555 there's much better content than his for niche anime imo

The cult is called Happy Science for anyone wondering.
