More precisely, I don't know how it was done, but if you need that kind of sound, try those, or modern equivalents like MilkyTracker they are even technically compatible in terms of output file format.
Tbh i get the game boy comparison on the music just sounds like midi to me, honestly though somehow more grating than the original ost for this area absolutely flabbergasted that this even exists.

It's a handcrafted game, just oldschool development without any special editing software
