Thank you. People respond to me like I’m crazy sometimes when I say wash multiple times a week, sometimes shampooing every time. Some of us have naturally oily scalps-you don’t need to have what some refer to as ‘silky biracial hair’ to have an oily scalp. Some of us swim or just workout a lot and sweat heavy. I’m not leaving chlorine or grime in my hair. It’s all still on my head and down my back. Stop believing myths. Experiment with your hair and see for yourself what’s capable of. Care for your hair according to your lifestyle and bodily needs.
"You have to move in baby steps. for example, if you wash once a month, try to wash every two days" 🤣 I know it was a typo, but it made me laugh out loud!
I have fine type 4 hair and I typically wash every 3 or 4 days because that’s best for me. I can go a week but that’s my upmost limit before my scalp rebels with itch and flakes. I alternate with a milder shampoo the second time. I have been criticized and told I was a “white girl”. It amazes me how people don’t think hair type and scalp are two different things that can have different needs.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and routine, just know that you're not the only one and I'm just happy to hear you found that sweet spot when it comes to your scalp care routine!
I wonder if Black women are experiencing so much hair loss and balding because of constantly dirty scalps. I've also considered that our "slower" rate of hair growth has something to do with our infrequent washing (dirty scalps).
Hair grows from the scalp fine. The reason why afro textured hair "doesn't grow" is because it breaks off at the ends. This is due to dryness and the structure of coily hair being more fragile than straight hair. My hair grows half an inch each month (which is the growth speed for hair). I can see it when I have braids and also when I had dyed hair. I wash my hair on average every 2 weeks with no problems.
I wouldn't say that it's a 'hair loss cause' but excessive buildup on the scalp can result into scalp inflammation that could lead to certain scalp conditions that could eventually cause certain type of hair loss. It won't speed up or slow down the hair growth rate though.
hair loss (except traction/friction caused) is an internal thing. If the hair strand is going in to the telogen phase, it might seem like you're loosing more hair than average during washing but this is just because of you circulating on the scalp causing it to fall out instead of falling out during that same day or week on its own. But you're of course always free to do what suits you best! So if that's washing every two weeks for you, don't change and stick to it!
Currently, I shampoo every 3-days since I was diagnosed with CCCA in Dec 2022. Previous to that I shampooed around every 5 - 7 days. Shampooing frequently has been a part of my routine most of my life, and my hair has not suffered from doing so.
Hi @Curlbellaa. Thanks for sharing this information. Lately I have increased the number of times a week I wash...then cowash my hair. I have gotten great results. I plan to continue it.
I wet my hair 2-3 times a week but only use shampoo once a week. I like the moisture without adding products and stripping my hair with so much shampoo. I don’t use heat (not even a blow dryer) so I find it hard to maintain styles because my hair is either damp or drying throughout the week. I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up because I can never wear stretched styles for longer than a day or 2… or is that the point?🤔 I just want to deal with my hair once a week without having to utilize weaves, wigs, or any other type of fake hair… and still look “polished”.
I wonder if the reason for this result is because of the length of time moisture is trapped on the scalp due to density and the lack of air that can freely flow thru type 4 hair🤔 maybe it’s causing yeast on the scalp
We all have yeast and bacteria on our scalp. So when it comes to conditions like dandruff or seb derm, there is an overgrowth of those yeasts present which can only be resolved when it comes to controlling the condition by frequent shampooing (preferably with active ingredient shampoos).
There is a UA-cam channel called "Cyn Doll", and I would be interested to know what you thimk about her views concerning natural hair, especially considering that she is a retired cosmetologist and you're a trichologist.
Why do people not shampoo and condition everyday? We have sweat, dirt from outside, from working out, product going into the next day etc. Just always felt someone created these don’t wash your hair with shampoo but once a week or once every two weeks was just lazy or trying to make our people look foolish
Product buildup, pollution, sweat, dirt in the air, things falling on your hair from the outside, the elements all contribute to dirty hair. I did a challenge of washing my hair twice a week and it did wonders for my hair, scalp and mind
i can't wait until the next state when we realize that "type x hair" is also irrelevant when it comes to hair care and we stop using that as a referral altogether. the more simple hair care is the better.
she's straight up gorgeous

Yeah.... maybe she meant increase twice a month.
Yes it was a typo my bad 🤣
I cleanse my scalp and condition my type4 hair every 3-5 days, I worked 5 days a week and sweat a lot in my scalp.

Do you have data to prove your assertion?

You are correct. Infrequent washing combined with constant oiling and greasing of the scalp.
I wouldn't say that it's a 'hair loss cause' but excessive buildup on the scalp can result into scalp inflammation that could lead to certain scalp conditions that could eventually cause certain type of hair loss. It won't speed up or slow down the hair growth rate though.
I tried washing my hair every week for 3 months and the amount of hair lost was depressing, never again! I’ll stick to washing every 2 weeks thanks

You’re so welcome! So happy to hear that frequent washing has been giving you great results! Keep up the good work! 🫶🏾

I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Maybe the scalp is dirty because of all the different products used.
