"What is real empathy? What is real love? What is real service? Is real service connecting in the sense of an attachment? Does that serve somebody? Is that an expression of love and concern and empathy, or when we attach emotionally is actually much more of a narcissistic drive?"
"...this is a great opportunity to really look at what your idea-not just in your mind but the other 90% of you below the neck-what your whole feeling about empathy is, because there's something that's good in it. There's something that's love. There's something that's real compassion, and there's something that's real caring within it. I can feel that in you. And there are other elements that cause that love and that empathy to start to drain you and feel like you literally need to cut off love and empathy so you can recharge."
"So then you get to see what is it in my love and empathy which is real, which is natural and compassion, what other elements are you adding that cause this sort of bonding in a way that's not healthy, that's very sticky?"
"As you explore it, you'll start to get it. You'll start to see...it's very common because part of becoming open as a human being is experiencing deeper loves of compassion and empathy and love. That's part of opening up as a human being, but the difficulty when we do open up that way, that we don't usually open up that way very cleanly, that it's also mixed in with our ideas and our beliefs and our concepts and our emotional attachments, and all of that get mixed in and then we think that's empathy and love. And when you start to disentangle it, a part of real love is also freedom."
