Habs have 4 pending UFA's and only one salary retention slot, which are an essential element to get contending teams to overpay at the deadline. Dvo would net a a draft pick that they don't need, but Evans and Savard are just the type of players that contending teams overpay for if the sender will retain his remaining salary. I would add Armia to this potential rental list, given his recent performance. So combined with a recent uptick in the Habs play, I think the Habs would be inclined to keep one or two of the three. I think Habs management views the experience of fighting for a playoff spot, or playing playoff games is more valuable to development than the draft picks they could get. As a Habs fan, I would be delighted if they signed Evans to an extension.

Pettersson's sensitivity is getting in the way. He CHOSE to be in very public high-pressure job as a high salary NHL star. That role requires a thick skin, especially in a Canadian market. Cozens, Byram, Kulich and a 1st round for Pettersson and Desharnais. Cozens has consistently shown flashes, is a right shot centerman, 2 years removed for a 70+ point season, and it's becoming more and more clear that he needs to be around some veterans to improve his game + consistency. JT Miller may be the type of player Cozens needs to bring out that consistency. Byram is unlikely to sign long term with the Sabres, and he MIGHT want to sign long term with the Canucks due to them being his hometown. If not, they have a partner for Hughes, with control of his contract for an extra year to make an actual attempt at the cup. Kulich is a center who has shown he is capable of playing with the big boys in the NHL. He is also a player the Canucks can send down to the NHL with no risk of losing, and allow him to develop there, and can fill in reliably if a player is injured. This is only if they are moving him btw.
