I like to think that White didn't get rid of all of her Pink, for some reason. It would explain why Pink is smaller and why White started reflecting pink at the end of the episode. It was because she still had some pink left in her.
Ik your comment is from 4y ago but I have to say I agree! And I don’t think she got rid of all of the blue and yellow either, that would explain why they are also smaller than her too I suppose. Someone mentioned she had black (not just grey) accent colors, a stark contrast, literally the opposite of white, unlike other gems. And magenta (pink), cyan (blue), and yellow all together make black!! She definitely has the most pink left though and that definitely explains why pink is so small, she didn’t have enough of whites “pink essence” to be as big as the other three.
I *love* that you're getting into color theory with the Diamonds! I have given this a lot of thought too! ONE IMPORTANT POINT is that White Diamond seems to be the only gem that *radiates* light. We see this in Legs and CYM - all of the characters are clearly illuminated by White. Other Gems do not usually radiate light unless they're fusing or reforming. This includes the other Diamonds. This reinforces the concept that White is different from the others, as Pearl hinted at in Legs. When White "bleaches" the other Gems, they don't start radiating light. They start reflecting all wavelengths instead of absorbing some. Contrary to 7:15, I think White doesn't begin to reflect pink. She seems to be the only light source in the room. She radiates pink (probably actually magenta, which is red and blue light combined), which means she's radiating less green, technically. (Not everyone might know that red, green and blue are the primary colors, and that Blue Diamond, IMO, is probably technically colored cyan, a secondary color like yellow and magenta.) The other gems reflect pink when White starts radiating pink. So considering that White is the only radiant Gem, I don't think she "split herself". She created each Diamond to fulfill a purpose, but for some reason these other Diamonds couldn't be white - they each had to absorb a primary color. Yellow absorbs blue, Blue (cyan) absorbs red, and Pink (magenta) absorbs green. How/if this color absorption corresponds to their personalities is a curious question, and it's cool you're digging into it. But I think the radiant/reflection distinction figures into it somehow! Great video :)
Though I like this hypothesis, and I know I'm about eight months late, I can't help but point out a flaw: green is _not_ a -creative- primary color. The primaries are red, yellow, and blue. Certain hues of pink could be considered "light red", so one could say that pink _reflects_ a primary color rather than absorbing it.
I always found White Diamond’s wording weird when she said “But you’re apart of me- the part I always have to repress.” It seemed like she actually created the other Diamonds, but I didn’t have any idea as to how she could do it. Curse you, high school physics! It does make sense as to why she’d expel the colors she absorbed. Without the emotions Pink, Yellow, and Blue represent, she’d be completely focused on her responsibilities. Without those emotions present within her mind, she wouldn’t lose sight of what she had to do. It’s almost like stoicism, where you simply endure without showing any emotion. The difference is that with White, she behaves apathetically and sometimes condescendingly.
I haven't seen the whole show but the Diamond lore is one of the best parts. True White may've been casting off that part of herself as Pink but was Pink herself a mistake? She obviously defied the Authority and eventually colonization and became enamored with life. She was also quite immature as a Diamond and then turns into this pudgy little obnoxious kid
All this makes me think of the Diamonds as a... reverse fusion? Maybe that's why fusion between different gems is seen in such bad light by homeworld gems - it represents the very thing White was trying to rid herself of by splitting up.
Not sure if this has been suggested yet, but if the sweat of the Diamonds is needed to create Diamonds, does that mean Steven's sweat could be used to make his own gems? Could Steven becoming a gem parent be an arc for later seasons?
Interesting take… I also find it interesting that when Steven is in the extraction room with yellow, Steven’s sweat appears to be pink… not sure if it’s just because of his skin color making it look that way, but I know a lot of thought goes into this show, so it could be likely that he can also do the same and the color choice for his sweat for this scene may be deliberate!
I think it was both, White had a vast empire and she couldn't be everywhere AND she needed to be perfect. I have a very huge theory that White is an AI that knew the gem creators and so her behaviour reflects that of a servile AI rather than a gem who has never known what they truly are.
While I think Pink was more representative to passion and love as opposed to empathy, as an extension to this theory, I think that's why pink diamond came out so small, because she was the part of White that she had the most trouble separating from herself, and a semblance of Pink remained a part of her, meaning that, at least on a physical level, pink is smaller because less of her actually became her, and instead remained a part of white, which is why white struggled so much with "suppressing" that part of her. White might have been a great deal weaker after the energy it took creating Yellow and Blue, and if she succeeded in fully separating Pink from herself, maybe Pink would have been bigger. Alternatively, or partially, it could also be a sign of how little White had of her to begin with.
I always thougth that White diamond said the thing "You were the part of me that i needed to repress" because, tecnically there are no pink/magenta wavelenght, its just a mixture of reds and purple in a specific way.
The reason pink is smaller than yellow and blue is because white didn’t expel all of her empathy, that’s why they’re still some pink left in her but no yellow or blue
White's dialogue always implied to me that she 'removed' the other diamonds from herself to become perfect, but the lore book seems to imply that all four diamonds emerged at the same time 20,000 years ago. I sure hope we get a more conclusive answer to where they came from some day, especially since apparently Future was originally supposed to delve into that lore.
But that’s not possible. Pink came after the 3 diamonds emerged, or so the show leads us to believe. Honestly, I feel like White created the other diamonds herself. How she did that, I don’t know. But it seems obvious that White is the oldest, Blue and Yellow came around the same times, then Pink.
It seems like it could be a president, mayor, governor relationship. White Diamond is the president, but she's one person and may not be able to manage as many people, so she makes a governor like Yellow and Blue Diamond, and then trains Pink Diamond to be another Governor.
Great theory video Toon Ruins! I do believe that that your theory might be accurate. Also, your theory does a good job explaining how Blue Diamond loved Pink Diamond the most out of all the diamonds, how Yellow Diamond cared for Pink Diamond but still clashed with her, and how White Diamond cared for Pink Diamond the least of all the diamonds, all through the different wavelengths of light that produces different colors.
So what I’m getting here is that white diamond used to be black, and each making each diamond drained some color out of her. If she had made yellow first, she would have turned purple, if she made blue first, she would have turned orange, and if she had made pink first, she would have turned green. After making all of them, she was totally drained of color. Her blushing could have come from her toenails!
Even though the show is long over; I still hold onto the headcanon that The Gems are basically The Necrons from Warhammer 40k. A species that abandoned their organic bodies and now view all organic life as inferior.
I love this theory. WD splitting herself to create other diamonds embodying her different personalities. makes me think she used to be bigger but shrunk in the process. Also if this is true, it must also be the reason why Pink resembles her
It makes complete sense when you think about it. White is all the colours and so she split herself into three which they have different personalities and which made her flawed. But at the end of change your mind, pinks personality affected her making her feel flawed
Their ship could even give the theory more credit, WD is the main part of the ship head/torso and BD and YD are the arms and PD is the legs. They’re parts of her and when combined she’s whole again.
yoooo i got a theory since suf trailer came out!! white diamond bleached herself! and i know this sounds like a stretch, but look at her in the trailer, she’s pink. and when she said the things of having to repress pink, i think she meant she needed to repress herself to be perfect and pretty much the exact opposite of pink
Blue Diamond is cyan, which is what you get by absorbing *red* light, leaving blues and greens. Yellow Diamond is, well, yellow, which is what you get by absorbing *blue* light, leaving reds and greens. Pink Diamond is magenta, which is what you get by absorbing *green* light, leaving reds and blues. Each diamond absorbs half of the other diamonds' spectra, except for the parts of White that aren't that deep non-reflective black. Of course, unfortunately for White Diamond, she can only reflect the light that's around her. By surrounding herself by the other diamonds, she shines a brilliant white, with twice the luminescence of the other diamonds, but taking them out in the way she did left her at the mercy of Pink's reds and blues.
so basically, all colors don't exists and everything is black but we don't see it thanks to the illusions of light... well, that just brightened my day ... But since Pink isn't around anymore, does that means that Gems like Rose Quartzs can't reproduce anymore? or do they just need the sweat of any Diamonds? that's a interesting theory about why White created the others diamonds but if they are the parts of her she wanted gone, why did she keep them around? why not get rid of them or imprison them if she view them as flawed and if she can do everything herself? I always thought the others diamonds were supposed to fulfill a purpose for the empire, like Yellow being charged to expand it. But that doesn't work quite well since all diamonds can have colonies.
So, going off of this theory and the science of colour reflection and absorption, as explained in the video, can we assume that it might have been possible for White Diamond to have been 'Black' Diamond, before she seperated herself?
This video makes me think of when white told Steven that she was "supposed to be better" is true. She took that part of herself away so that she was flawless... Or so she thought.
i wonder if her emotions worked almost like pigments. a printer uses cyan, yellow, and magenta dyes to create all colours. but if you strip them all away, you have no colour; ie no light is being absorbed by any pigments giving white. strangely a lot of her is black or grey like printer ink though, ie she can absorb all colour. maybe it’s reflective of how she can bleach others
What if White Diamond popped out naturally! The right minerals and substances collected together to form her. She wanted to have company or something and she attempted to make another one of her. So yeah that’s my theory :)
I agree with you, that was my exact thought. She wanted to repress or get rid of her anger (Yellow), her sadness (Blue), and her compassion (Pink) in order to do the job she believes is the best. To be the perfect leader, because those three emotions are the strongest ones that can change or alter ones thought process and make one question if they are doing the right thing or not. Without them, one will solely do something they believe has the best outcome, regardless of possible repercussions. That's what she says she's perfect, because without those emotions, one won't doubt themselves and find themselves imperfect.
This theory makes so much sense however, in one of the episodes it is stated that when pink diamond was still “alive” blue, yellow, and white hung out with pink. Its also suggested white diamond laughed along with the other diamonds when pink was around. It’s also stated that white and the three other diamonds were once well aquatinted and very close, until pink diamond was shattered. This small little detailed almost completely ruins your theory because if white diamond really split herself into different emotions she thought made her imperfect therefore getting in the way of her purpose and her job, then she wouldn’t have the need to laugh and play along with the three other diamonds. On the other hand, it could also be that pink diamond was the part of her that she actually loved, which could be why when pink was gone she went and hid away which also conveys to us that she didn’t feel the need to stick around anymore as the part of her that kept her laughing and having fun was now completely gone. Which meant that all her imperfections were now also gone with pink. This is also proven when it’s shown that pink diamonds purpose was to “entertain “ which is why she has child-like qualities and is shown throwing tantrums and getting easily bored. She’s also smaller then the other diamonds and it’s implied pink diamond wasn’t also meant to have a colony. But your theory also sort of proves this point, as if pinks personality and sympathy and love for things was originally white diamonds emotions, this could’ve also gotten in the way of destroying other planets as she would’ve felt too bad to kill them. If these were white diamonds emotions this further proves when she split herself into different diamonds and placed her imperfections in them, she knew pink diamond couldn’t of had a colony as she knew she would’ve felt bad for destroying it. However as originally stated earlier, all four gems used to be pretty close. This closeness could indicate white diamond knew pink well enough to understand she couldn’t have a colony as she knew she wouldn’t be able to do it. (Also due to her size possibly). I really like ur theory tho
Sorry to say this about theroundtable but his wild off-the-wall fan theories and obsessions drove me away from SU related videos, but you take a much more realistic view of the show, with much better case studies, love the work
This definitely sounds like what White Diamond would do, I mean she's a perfectionist extreme. If she wants "perfection", oh she'll find a way to get there
It seems like White created the other Diamonds in order to externalize and sever parts of herself she feels weakened by; grief, sadness, love, empathy.
I'm 4 years late but given that White Diamond is still able to show warm colours through "blushing", that could imply through this theory that her repression and therefore ejection of the warmth in her spectrum into a new Diamond was probably incomplete. If she had fully ejected red from her spectrum, would Pink Diamond have been Red Diamond and of similar height to Blue and Yellow? And would White Diamond have been essentially unbeatable by Steven's quip as she wouldn't have had the emotions required to "blush"?
Hmm... Yellow... Cyan... and Magenta... the three additive primary colors... Also, common gems being made from the fluid that comes from the Diamonds explains why second era gems weren't as strong as first era. Pink disappeared, and with her an important ingredient.
There’s a book that Rebecca and the crew are making called End of An Era, and they BLACK OUT the diamond origins, however there is a small image of them bursting from a planet
A good theory was that the diamonds came from another alien race who created them as colony servants when they rebelled and escaped to little home world where they made their empire of gems.
I wish there would be a new race just like the gems where they are called the the Ore(s) which would have masculine physical bodies opposite to the gems that masters different martial arts or fighting techniques instead of weapons. The combination of gems and metal/valuable minerals would make jewelries ~_~. And instead of upgraded weapons, their fusions will have the gem's unique weapon matched with the ore's fighting technique.
Pick up "encyclopedia of crystals" and the endless gemstone possibilities that I'm sure Rebecca sugar herself owns and probably got ideas for certain characters
I know this might be an age old question, but why do white and pink diamond have full diamonds, while blue and yellow only have diamond shapes? I’m confused. It leaves pink and yellow with giant gems, but blue and yellows gems aren’t as large. I don’t understand.
Maybe it has something to do with size too like yellow is bigger than blue and pink because she was really hot tempered but pink is really small because she isn’t to empathetic
I originally expected White diamond to be the creator of diamond social structure, but she seemed to have been operating under someone elses ideals. With regard to making diamonds, I think diamonds get made 'accidentally', much the way Jasper was just 'better' occasionally an injector produces a diamond. This is why Pink was 'younger' then Blue and Yellow.
well because perfect is good, its, well, perfect. Everyone drives to improve themselves and thats exactly what she wanted to do. Its just natural to want to be better.
@@penntopaper9305 Exactly. Being the supreme leader of an enormous empire, you are expected to be flawless. (Which is what White Diamond pictured herself to be) She wanted a utopian society, but in the process, hurt Gems around her.
Here’s a thing that could of happened in Steven universe future. So when Pearl and Steven were at the reef to fix the pink pearl couldn’t she get poofed and reform without the crack?!
Y’know, given the intro for Steven Universe Future we saw, this theory’s become WAY more likely for me. In it, WD is pink and she looks like she’s grabbing her head and screaming in pain. Maybe her emotions, after being repressed for so long, are coming out and being shown, so she’s lashing out.
I just think the diamonds were randomly created on home world and white came out first then yellow and blue and pink came out last because that’s why she’s the smallest and that she was the fourth diamond of the gem empires logo
Sugar said that Rose lacked empathy - Steven got that from Greg *not* her (I don't appreciate misinformation; but~ I'll just assume you didn't know because that interview was *years* ago and I can't find it - only people who referenced it). She did, however, have *sympathy* . Maybe that was all she needed - after all, she didn't need to feel what they (the other gems) felt, only to understand that they needed change. Not everyone has empathy, but everyone can have sympathy. ((To sympathize is to pity and to show compassion or provide condolences)) ((To empathize is to put yourself in *their* shoes and feel their emotions from *their* perspective instead of your own.)) They may sound similar but they are quite different, no? It's mostly done subconsciously, at least in my experience...
i know this is really late and this probably wont be answered but if she created them to take out some emotions to make her better as how she sees better then when pink was "shattered" or so they thought at first why did she just not make a new pink if she made the first one
That is a very good idea! I always thought the first being was White. She was joined by Yellow and Bkue after a few thousand years. They discovered other smaller gems. They discovered how to make them themselves and this gave control over them. The way gems originally were created was lost in time. (Maybe there were male gems but they got irradicated because the diamonds didn't like men. Idk, that's just funny to me) Pink formed after the process of starting colonies, and from the moment they realized she was a diamond, the others took her in, but were too comfortable with the way of things to give Pink her own colony for a while.
Oh!That's why pink diamond and pearl can change collors and stuff!Because she doesnt have any impurities and stuff like white do!That's why pink diamond shapeshifted into rose and had different collors and same did pearl! It makes sense

Time to get into physics, biology and such to further prove this theory
White is like a mom to all the rest of the diamonds and gems
Jesus I felt like I was knocked into class.
"Fanart by Guzma"
Now Im imagining Team Skulls leader squatting down to lovingly draw that image
I think you're a genius cause HOLY SHIT THIS WAS GOOD, AND MADE SO MUCH SENSE!!!
I love diamond lore! I wish there was more of it ):
All this makes me think of the Diamonds as a... reverse fusion? Maybe that's why fusion between different gems is seen in such bad light by homeworld gems - it represents the very thing White was trying to rid herself of by splitting up.
Not sure if this has been suggested yet, but if the sweat of the Diamonds is needed to create Diamonds, does that mean Steven's sweat could be used to make his own gems? Could Steven becoming a gem parent be an arc for later seasons?
Technically he already created a pebble :0
I like your human design! I always figured Blue was also weak to Yellow if she absorbs warmth.
It makes sence but I think white creating the other diamonds was also to help off load the burden of producing that liquid.
Please, call it what it is. Gem Juice.
This theory makes sense but there was an article that confirmed that all diamonds emerged at the same time or at least the same way.
Soooo? White diamond use to be black diamond but bleached her by splitting her personalities into fours. *CONFUSION INTENSIFIES*
It seems like it could be a president, mayor, governor relationship. White Diamond is the president, but she's one person and may not be able to manage as many people, so she makes a governor like Yellow and Blue Diamond, and then trains Pink Diamond to be another Governor.
Definitely. It takes some leadership attitude to notice this - well done 🔥
Toon: Well I’m not going to go too into this-
*Has a three minute long science lesson*
Also if this is true, it must also be the reason why Pink resembles her
Wait, maybe, if this theory is correct, if all four of the diamonds fuse, would that mean that we would technically see the "true" WD?
It makes complete sense when you think about it. White is all the colours and so she split herself into three which they have different personalities and which made her flawed. But at the end of change your mind, pinks personality affected her making her feel flawed
Their ship could even give the theory more credit, WD is the main part of the ship head/torso and BD and YD are the arms and PD is the legs. They’re parts of her and when combined she’s whole again.
ADVANCED -CRYSTAL- CLASSROOM GEM!
[But what about the biggest question...
*_... am I the best character in Steven universe? I am, right?]_*
Ruby bae
Maybe not THE best, but definitely in the top 5 !
There's Leggy-
I'm not that sure..
*[This isn't a question... yes]*
yoooo i got a theory since suf trailer came out!!
white diamond bleached herself! and i know this sounds like a stretch, but look at her in the trailer, she’s pink. and when she said the things of having to repress pink, i think she meant she needed to repress herself to be perfect and pretty much the exact opposite of pink
I think she *thinks* (or well, thought) that she had split herself
when in truth she just creates new beigns and pretended she was perfect
You literally explained everything I just learned about colors at school
my conclusion was:
White Diamond creating the DA = Homunculus expelling the 7 sins in FMAB lol
What if White Diamond popped out naturally!
The right minerals and substances collected together to form her.
She wanted to have company or something and she attempted to make another one of her.
So yeah that’s my theory :)
Best one so far
Man that message was deep.
I remember being in college watching the show. Good times!
Sounds like a solid confession to me" -Yellow Diamond; The Trial
There’s a book that Rebecca and the crew are making called End of An Era, and they BLACK OUT the diamond origins, however there is a small image of them bursting from a planet
A good theory was that the diamonds came from another alien race who created them as colony servants when they rebelled and escaped to little home world where they made their empire of gems.
They created them as power source but they didn't realize that this energy was alive
I think she did. But the question I have is 'who created white diamond and why?'
I knew i wasn't the only one who questioned this! Also great video as always ❤
Good to see you're back! I hope you had a nice break and got some relaxing done. I hope you're doing alright!👍
wow i never thought of the diamonds colors scientifically, this really opened my eyes
White diamond looks like the father on fullmetal alchemist brotherhood
That kinda make sense on why white diamond is so emotionless a bit....
It’s like the other diamonds are actually her split personalities.
Maybe it has something to do with size too like yellow is bigger than blue and pink because she was really hot tempered but pink is really small because she isn’t to empathetic
White Diamond is The Dwarf in the Flask (aka. Father) from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Manga.
You always blow my mind with your theories Lea
I originally expected White diamond to be the creator of diamond social structure, but she seemed to have been operating under someone elses ideals.
With regard to making diamonds, I think diamonds get made 'accidentally', much the way Jasper was just 'better' occasionally an injector produces a diamond. This is why Pink was 'younger' then Blue and Yellow.
So White Diamond is basically Father from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? Good to know.
thats EXACTLY what i thought, thank you
This is now my headcanon
Another question is: Why does she feel compelled to be perfect and destroy the first society (era 0) that inhabits homeworld?
well because perfect is good, its, well, perfect. Everyone drives to improve themselves and thats exactly what she wanted to do. Its just natural to want to be better.
@@penntopaper9305
Exactly.
Omgsh I've had this theory for so long but youve said it so much better and I'm so proud!
This is wonderfully put together. I fully believe in every idea in this video. This is amazing~
FYI for science. Pink and Purple are not pure colors, they can more accurately be described as a lack of green light.
What if white just popped into existence and made the other diamonds but left them in the ground longer so they would not be as powerful as her
This broke down so much-
Y’know, given the intro for Steven Universe Future we saw, this theory’s become WAY more likely for me.
Shooting star falls to homeworld
Bebe White diamond : OAA OAAA
Thats how WD existed
Can I just point out how cool the new "sprites" (I forgot the actual word) are?
The previous ones were cool as well, but too "dolldivine".
Character
I once had a dream I was Steven and I was riding around Colorado in a pink jumper and all four of us had sunglasses on it was ducking lit yo
i just wanna appreciate about the cool article link you have mentioned in the description of this video. thanks for sharing this great info
((To sympathize is to pity and to show compassion or provide condolences))
((To empathize is to put yourself in *their* shoes and feel their emotions from *their* perspective instead of your own.))
They may sound similar but they are quite different, no? It's mostly done subconsciously, at least in my experience...
i think White Diamond evolved from a corrupted gem and divided herself creating the other diamonds creating a sapient species
i know this is really late and this probably wont be answered but if she created them to take out some emotions to make her better as how she sees better then when pink was "shattered" or so they thought at first why did she just not make a new pink if she made the first one
Diamond sweat is critical to making gems. I had never heard that before. But it explains why Steven's spit/tears have life giving power.
What happens if one of the diamonds see a actual diamond
I’m really glad someone touched on what white diamond said in that last episode as it co fused me so much.
Idk, that's just funny to me)
Pink formed after the process of starting colonies, and from the moment they realized she was a diamond, the others took her in, but were too comfortable with the way of things to give Pink her own colony for a while.
Oh!That's why pink diamond and pearl can change collors and stuff!Because she doesnt have any impurities and stuff like white do!That's why pink diamond shapeshifted into rose and had different collors and same did pearl! It makes sense
so if all the diamonds, including steven, fuse. it will be black diamond or a variation of black diamond (due to his human side)?
I would just like to ask, if colors are illusions, then how exactly do things like dyes, paints, etc., work?
