Here is indeed an excellent concerto for piano and orchestra. It is the last one and dates from 1901 - a period of maturity for the composer. The piano has a relatively demanding part, but the orchestra is not forgotten - Reinecke is an excellent orchestrator. The construction is very firm. The tonality of B minor gives it its dark colour to the splendid themes and developments, which keep a dark tone but however never turn to drama. The extreme movement are rather energetic, the central rather lyric. It is a pity that this concerto left the traditional repertoire. I never heard it neither in concert nor in radio.

Wow! He wrote this when he was 77 years old.
As an aside he was the oldest (born 1824) person ever to have his piano playing recorded (old wire recorder), when he was 85.

Maybe you mean "earliest", not "oldest" as I understand other pianists (e.g Rubinstein) may have been recorded when older. Anyway, a very interesting comment

@@robertoasseodechoch2680 i am very curious about that recording. We can finally hear how real romantic pianists play.

Carl Reineke may have been a refined composer but he always had something to say. His harp concerto and later flute concerto are justly famous. The four piano concertos and three symphonys are excellent pieces and well worth listening to.

I fully agree with your statement. our composer knew perfectly the way how to write for the orchestra, alone or with a soloist. There is also a tremendous violin concerto and two charming concertos, one for flute, one for harp. At the romantic period, the fact deserves to be noted.

The 4 piano concertos of Reinecke are all romantic beauties. A pity that his concertos
are not performed any more, so he became a forgotten romantic pianist!

I've noticed among the comments on this video someone mentioning that there is just something missing from Reinecke's 4 piano concertos. The only thing I think is missingly is openmindedness from those who tries to call Reinecke "just another man who composed some concertos". Some people seem to be so stuck in the main stream composers, that they just cannot recognise great music by those who have been pushed aside by the establishment, even when they hear the music on Youtue. Reinecke certainly was not good enough to be place equal to all time greats like Beethoven, Schumann or Brahms. Yet, there is so much class and mastery in for example his symphonies and concertos (and not only the piano concertos) it certainly does not deserve its neglect. If not among the very greatest of composers, Reinecke none the less was a very fine composer and his name should also have been a household name among lovers off classical music. Those who cannot appreciate his music, tbey are surely missing out on great music enjoyment!

Yes, it is a fact that people like hearing the same most famous pieces over and over again to the exclusion of lesser known composers and works, but this is true of people for all things in life.

This concerto dates from the maturity of the composer (1901). It is an outstanding work, by its thematics, by the handling of the diffeent voices, by the complementarity between piano and orchestra. The extreme movements are fairly energetic, the central movement is fairly lyric.

4 piano concertos...Romantic, of course. Strong, of course. Full of temperamental glimmering feelings, of course. And yet...something is missing. Doesn´t make the "click", doesn´t leave a musical sentence in your memory. Just flows - and maybe that´s the secret: flowing just for the plasure of letting it down while the sandclock leaves the grains down the glass, who knows?

Il secondo movimento di questo affascinante concerto supera i canoni ottocenteschi e si puo' considerare di fatto moderno.

The 2nd movement is just beautiful, it carries one along a nostalgic and somewhat melancholy path. I suspect that a conservative composer like Reinecke intellectually avoids any big romantic tunes as, somehow, "cheap" or inappropriate to his idiom. I find that if I simply relax and enjoy this music, it is more profound and moving than anyone gives it credit for. Stop with the invidious comparisons to "great" composers and who is the "best". This is not athletics or a game of some sort. The idea is to enjoy the composers art and beauty as it is and it is , actually , really wonderful, even if we don't walk away singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms."
