  • comicsforbeginners.com/comics... As an artist you often have more ideas than you have the time and resources to complete. How do you decide what projects to do next? How do you make sure you’re not just mindlessly taking on all incoming work but stay true to your creative vision? Is strategy even a word in the artist dictionary? And what does a walk in the woods have to do with making comics? More videos at comicsforbeginners.com/comics...

Nice to see you again! Great tips. I've been skeptical taking up (personal) projects because I really want to make sure it'd be worth the resources and time because in finishing my first graphic novel, I've quickly realized just how much that is. I am having trouble getting people to read my novel but I truly believe in the message I'm trying to get out and I personally feel that it's been worth the year I spent working on it (and time currently spending filling in gaps from the first edition). I'm just about to tune into the podcast you linked in another comment on comic success. Thank you for all the resources you've taken the time to share with us, it makes me feel like I'm on this comic journey and I've got someone looking out for me!

Personal projects are NEVER worth the time and effort but you gotta do them anyway! I'm just trying to make up for the number of years spent going in the wrong direction.. Congrats on the graphic novel. You will always have that. Both the experience and the IP, don't sell yourself short. You just did what 99% dream to do and never complete!

It's been some time you didn't make a video, when is the next one?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Any tips on how do you find out if your project is interesting for more than three or four people?

Ah, good point! One way to validate your idea is to do a Kickstarter, of course.. But that's a lot of work! I'd probably lean more towards webcomics and/or Instagram and see if you can get some idea there. Besides validation of your idea/style/whatever, it will also give you some leverage if you decide to approach a publisher. If you can say "I have 10.000 Instragram followers" they tend to listen harder to your pitch :-)

Thanks Palle. I’m (still) not using any social network. I’ll check the podcast you suggested. When do you think is a good moment to show your new work to a publisher? Having a script and, say, five pages of your comic book would be enough?

5-10 pages would normally be enough, check the individual publishers website. I have a longer article on how to create a compelling pitch in the premium section of the site.
