This song and video are full of symbolism. In the first half the ambiance is old Hollywood; it’s warm and soft and bright( both inside and outside). But Billie is wearing a big black t-shirt that says “ I don’t have to sell my soul”. And her vocals are soft and slow, like a torch song mixed with Patsy Cline vibes. Her words and her surroundings are totally incongruent . At first she doesn’t notice the drops of water, much like the signs of abuse that comes from a relationship with a narcissist. When the lights start flickering I think it’s symbolic of gaslighting, another tool that is used by narcissists. When she opens the door it’s a watershed moment, literally and figuratively. “Wasting my breath” while she’s trying to swim to the surface. And at the moment that she breaks through it she’s realized “ I don’t relate to you”. NOW it’s dark and raining and her surroundings and her words are in sync. The water and the rain are almost baptismal. She’s free and totally in charge of calling out the bullshit. Like she was wasting her breath , but she won’t allow ( anymore of) her time to be wasted. Here she’s yelling “and don’t make me feel bad” like in Your Power when she says “ ( I thought that I was special) you made me feel like it was my fault you were the Devil ( lost your appeal).” Again, classic behavior of a narcissist.
The second half is so cathartic.
I left an awful relationship about the same time the album was released and i was like 'wow a whole album about a breakup with a narc'. It was incredibly healing for me to listen to & won my number 1 spot for last year by a mile in listen time. Really great comment - thanks for sharing your insights.

For 2 months, i listened to this song unhealthily. i was going through a breakup too. i would listen to this song on repeat almost all day. this was my first heartbreak and too im doing better😭

This song came out when I was with an ab**ive partner. I didn't know it would give me the motivation to break it off and do exactly how she's describing in her song. It's so cathartic i cry every time

The video is about an emotionally abusive relationship, with the house acting as a representation of being in the relationship and convincing yourself everything is fine, and the water rushing through being the realization of the damage that was done after the relationship which you couldn’t realize while in the relationship.
You need to read the energy on the whole album!! It varies from bitter, to angry, to sad, to sassy! It would be interesting to hear you describe it!
