Cerulean City is so far the most economically diverse and culturally rich city yet still has amongst the highest unemployment rate so far and is affecting a particular group of individuals more than other citizens. As well, much of the city's industry is heavily based on encouraging tourism between Misty's gym having an audience unlike Brock's, Bill's collection being a world renowned exhibit, and the bike maniac encouraging longer distance travel given Kanto's overall lack of public transportation. These are all indicators of gentrification likely brought on by the establishment of either Misty's gym and/or Bill's lab which brought in new business such as the daycare but created a decline in employment among the former locals.
Man it really does feel like you broke through something on this one. It felt like your assessments were more accurate but also like you didn’t have to think as hard about them. Like a really nice natural flow, tapped into your instincts, like you just knew the answer every time. (Because it’s your job and you’ve been doing this for a long time obviously)
What started as what was just a funny joke is actually becoming super interesting to me! I am eagerly awaiting more episodes! Using this information to try and reason what sort of higher government rules kanto is super intreaguing! I have never really thought about it until now!
just don't think about what he says too much. Any normal person will find a lot of things wrong with what he says....employment means someone else is paying you, so no one pays the gym leaders. The Gym leaders own the gym themselves. And again, no one pays them. No one pays to get in or to challenge them. Only one who makes money is the markets. And we can't even prove they make money. How much is a pokeball whole sale and how can I get that? I have max money I should be able to buy bulk from some one else. So they must make their own pokeball, or be part of the company that does. And that leaves Team Rocket and farmers markets who make money. But then he also says player characters mom in pokemon red/blue/yellow is unemployed, but if you look that up, she owns and runs Pallet towns ONLY restaurant so shes employed...so WHAT ELSE IS HE WRONG ABOUT.... really doesn't take that much effort, so what hes doing is using his own opinion which isn't based in fact or reality...his videos are fun but wrong.
@@ravinraven6913point about the Gyms is wrong, they are federated by the Indigo League, and obviously the gym leaders change over time so that makes no sense. Point about the mom also obviously wrong because this is about the game not the anime canon, there are zero restaurants in Pallet in game
I have a suspicion that both parents of the house that was broken into work, however they had to return home to await the police department to file a report.
The idea of Brock just being a huge child labor enthusiast is kind of hilarious when in the show he takes care of his family. Guess they have to do something after all.
It would be super interesting to look into the towns in breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom. Since there’s like a 6(?) year gap between them, but they’re still the same locations, we could see how they’ve changed. (I’m assuming it’s over 6 years since Hudson and Rhondson’s daughter didn’t exist in BOTW but is old enough to travel to Gerudo town with supervision in TOTK)
I really appreciate the Bureau's dedication to examining biases and heteronormativity, or making other assumptions while taking surveys. You don't see that a lot these days.
Given the fact that in Gen2 Lance (who is at the time the champion of the Indigo League) is directly and seemingly officially involved in a very serious criminal investigation into an international crime syndicate (Team Rocket), I think it's safe to say that in the Kanto/Johto region(s) at least the local Pokemon League (includimg both the gyms and the championship) are either A) a government entity, possibly even a Bureau themselves; B) a major moneymaking corporation in a surprisingly benevolent anarcho-capitalist dogpile; or C) the actual government body itself of Kanto/Johto, meaning all policy makers are determined by who is best at training magical animals to participate in bloodsports. Definitely worth further investigation.
very interesting point anarchism of some form is well supported by the lack of police response seen when team rocket openly engages in criminal conspiracies involving large gatherings of members and coercion of civilians, as seen at goldenrod city's radio tower in particular. security guards are known to operate near goldenrod city, outside of city limits, but they may be a local volunteer force akin to a neighborhood watch or militia the takeover of the goldenrod city radio tower in particular would've been especially noticeable across the region. that lance, a Kanto native, did not intervene suggests that even the league itself may operate this way: B and C may be the same possibility
Just one small thing: At 14:40 you say the bike cost 1,000,000 *dollars,* however given the setting of the first few Pokemon games (including this one) and the value of certain commodity goods (most significantly Fresh Water costing 250P), I believe the currency here is closer in value to yen. Which is to say, the bike here would likely be worth ¥1,000,000; or roughly $10,000 given conversion factors in the game's year of release. Love this series btw, been a fan since Isle Delfino and any day I see one of these in my sub feed is instantly a better one

The guards around Saffron City should be attributed to there and the clearly employed guard by Cerulean Cave should be counted. I also feel the people on route 10 should be counted for Cerulean since Rock Tunnel is a barrier to easy commuting. The power plant workers from GSC and HGSS would count if they existed in this game along with the people at the Pokémon Center out there.
I enjoyed the increasingly unhinged thoughts without filter in this one! I think there was also a lifeguard in the gym? Might be wrong and it was a spectator but I hope there was one, battles plus that big of a pool? Hazard
The manga places the Gym Leaders (or at least the Elite Four) as the governmental authorities, so I usually go off of that (I also include Johto, Sevii, and Orange, along with Kanto, as the larger Indigo government, as they have a single Elite Four, and also the “Pokémon War” theory about the demographics of G1 and G2)
And also Bruno got his elite four position thanks to his connections, since he is too weak to be an elite four member. Corruption also exists in the Pokémon world
Hey Austin, I hear you've got connections as the Bureau, and I was wondering if they could survey an entire planet instead of a city. Timber Hearth from Outer Wilds definitely warrants some investigation.

All Pokémon gyms are said to be in affiliation with the region-wide Pokémon League, and seeing as intercity problems are often shuffled to the Pokémon League champion to solve, and local instances of public welfare are the responsibility of local gym leaders to manage, it’s my professional opinion that the Pokémon League IS the regional government. Ergo, gyms are most likely subsidized entirely with taxes. Perhaps property tax, which suggests why only towns above a certain geographical area size have a Pokémon gym in operation.
A possibility you haven't considered is that the nice city can afford a nice pokemon gym. Instead of a nice gym leader resulting in a nice gym and city. The city is successful and thus can fund a good pokemon center.
Love these videos, The Kanto cities are quite interesting for economic analysis as there also information about how they are doing 2-3 years in the future in the Gold & Silver games. Most notably Lavender town will convert its Pokemon Town from a Mausoleum to a Radio Tower.
The Pokemon Tower development is pretty interesting in general. The renovation was funded by Giovanni to function as a testing ground for mass-produced Silph Scopes, but once Rocket was disbanded, local radio technicians probably took over the half-finished Rocket base when it was determined that demolishing it could have horrible consequences due to the resident spirits.
My head canon is that the pokemon world was much harder to survive in due to the all the magic animals, so people depended on the strongest monster trainers to protect and lead them, which has lead to gym leaders being the mayors to this day, despite no longer needing that structure
“Anarcho-Capitalist Dictatorship” is not something I would ever expect to hear in a labor survey 😂. In all honesty though there never seems to be any sort of governance in Pokémon, with the closest thing being the local gym leaders. It could very well be that the Kanto region is governed by the Pokémon League itself, since Pokémon battling seems to be the main focus of the region. Every gym leader is like their own warlord who gains power by being the strongest, most influential Pokémon battler in the region, only adhering to the rules of the league, tied together in a sort of bizarre confederation. It’s hard to guess what role the elite 4 play, whether or not they dictate policy or that being left up to some other league entity. What is clear is that this line of thinking completely reframes the way Pokémon is looked at. It’s not just a sport, but the pathway to power in the Pokémon world, and the player is working his way up the hierarchy, which is an underly hilarious take for a children’s game.
Those trainers north of Cerulean city are there because they too heard about Bill's secret garden. Those diving platforms in the gym look unsafe, seeing how shallow the water is. I think you might want to get a building/fire department inspector involved. Also there's no safety railing to enter and exit the pool.
8:02 made me cackle. You may be a glorified adult lullaby composer, but it's an oversaturated market and I still keep coming back to you, so you must be doing something right.

i like the pokemon surveys because they give so little information so you have to analyse the situation a lot more. it makes arriving at the conclusion of whether they are employed or not more satisfying and is also very entertaining. I like your thought processes :) I think the backyard hunk is very happy with his divorced sugar daddy
In GSC Misty goes up past nugget bridge while on a date implying people from town still might go up there often enough. In fact since those games take place two years after you could argue hgss might be better to use? Idk when let's go takes place if it's even connected to the main timeline so...
Let's Go is in a near identical parallel timeline. Red and Blue have been aged up and replaced, but everything else is the same. I suspect Red and Blue would still end up in the same places they do in the main canon during HGSS. So, I'd say they're close enough to compare.

I would count the guard as part of Saffron City, since he along with his three other crewmates guard each cardinal direction to and from Saffron City until you give them a drink. Not very good behavior from an employed persons but he still is the guard to Saffron city. Also, if you somehow glitch your way inside of Saffron City before giving the guards their drink, you can leave the city, but not go back in- showing that he guards Saffron, and not Cerulean.

@@ravinraven6913wow, it looks like you’ve put a lot of thought into this. Perhaps you should make your own video with your interpretation!
"That hair was recently done... at some sort of Great Clips"... bro that hit harder and traumatizintg than you know
The idea of Brock just being a huge child labor enthusiast is kind of hilarious when in the show he takes care of his family.
Yes a chance to see economies evolving!
Definitely worth further investigation.
very interesting point
anarchism of some form is well supported by the lack of police response seen when team rocket openly engages in criminal conspiracies involving large gatherings of members and coercion of civilians, as seen at goldenrod city's radio tower in particular. security guards are known to operate near goldenrod city, outside of city limits, but they may be a local volunteer force akin to a neighborhood watch or militia
the takeover of the goldenrod city radio tower in particular would've been especially noticeable across the region. that lance, a Kanto native, did not intervene suggests that even the league itself may operate this way: B and C may be the same possibility
@@DavidJCobb which supports even more that Team Rocket are sort of the pokemon yakuza.
Big fan of Austin’s distress at seeing the people in the stands, it sounded so real and raw and righteous
This series is not only taking a census, it's taking a hard look at our internal biases and assumptions
I love this series. Your monologues on the weird minute details of games is always a treat and I’m still jamming to your music at work. Looking forward to the next vid and album, whenever you decide to drop them.
I'm rather amused at the fact that you got to Bill, and considered literally everything about him other than the fact that he developed and manages the entire Pokémon PC system in Kanto and Johto.
"im a glorified adult lullaby composer"
thats so funny because the first thought i had when i saw the notification for this video was "i cant wait to fall asleep to that"
Technically, for tax purposes, Bill is a Clefairy.
"That would explain the Onyx... ya know what im sayin" I LOST IT
The guards around Saffron City should be attributed to there and the clearly employed guard by Cerulean Cave should be counted.
Corruption also exists in the Pokémon world
I like how the lore of this series places Skyrim, Kanto, and Honduras in the same extended universe.
Lt Surge is American, so why not Honduras?
Hey Austin, I hear you've got connections as the Bureau, and I was wondering if they could survey an entire planet instead of a city. Timber Hearth from Outer Wilds definitely warrants some investigation.
When you said "Love a man who wears gloves to work" I remembered my sweat soaked gloves Ive been wearing for the past three weeks and now need to remember to get another pair. Thank you
“i’m just saying it’s a PROBLEMATIC relationship dynamic that we need to INTERROGATE… now, will i be the one to interrogate it? no -“
austin you are a gem of a human lmaooooo
gem of a human.....gems are like a few dollars, Red coral is a gem but its like $12 for a handful...so are you saying hes a dime a dozen?
That bit sent me, hilarious
@@ravinraven6913you are up and down this comment section saying the most unhinged shit imaginable, please touch grass and seek counseling
Why am I obsessed with this series, please keep making more of them
Love these videos, The Kanto cities are quite interesting for economic analysis as there also information about how they are doing 2-3 years in the future in the Gold & Silver games.
I love these
My head canon is that the pokemon world was much harder to survive in due to the all the magic animals, so people depended on the strongest monster trainers to protect and lead them, which has lead to gym leaders being the mayors to this day, despite no longer needing that structure
"Wisdom hairline" thats one way to say it
“Anarcho-Capitalist Dictatorship” is not something I would ever expect to hear in a labor survey 😂.
Hey the old man at the daycare is retired, his wife just cant give up running the daycare so he hangs out there with her and collects bottle caps 😂
He's getting ready for Fallout
Those trainers north of Cerulean city are there because they too heard about Bill's secret garden. Those diving platforms in the gym look unsafe, seeing how shallow the water is. I think you might want to get a building/fire department inspector involved. Also there's no safety railing to enter and exit the pool.
8:02 made me cackle. You may be a glorified adult lullaby composer, but it's an oversaturated market and I still keep coming back to you, so you must be doing something right.
Austin with no facial hair: beautiful
Austin with slight beard: please become my legal guardian
it’s giving, father
This video was a pleasant surprise in my recommended and definitely earned a subscription
The revelations discovered of the 2 households at 9:35 was too much to handle
I cannot explain why I love these videos so much. But I really do holy god thank you for all the great content
I feel like the bike shop is a front for money laundering 👀
I am laughing how you explained the divorced couple and the hidden suggestion why she has that onxi in the house.😂
It's nice to know Pokémon is still keeping their hidden adult jokes.🤣😅😯🤢
I love these videos so much but your methodology on deciding who lives in the town is insane. The master trainer is literally in the house
i like the pokemon surveys because they give so little information so you have to analyse the situation a lot more. it makes arriving at the conclusion of whether they are employed or not more satisfying and is also very entertaining. I like your thought processes :) I think the backyard hunk is very happy with his divorced sugar daddy
Gotta say that I appreciate that there are shadows to the text. Really nice touch
I just wanted to say it absolutely cracks me up every time you align the label with the way they're facing 😂😂😂
I didn't notice the smile until you zoomed in. Perfect.
Found the channel from the skyrim restaurants video, and have since gone back and watched all your videos starting at the mario 64 skybox episode, and a few before it too. I'll leave a notice of enjoyment for all them here. Keep making this stuff! It's all been great
I like to imagine that real census agents also determine employment and area of living based on 1 line of dialogue and how people are dressed
All employment enumerators go by whether the persons shirt is tucked in; its a very well-known fact.
Loved how you included the shadows for your employed tags. Keep up the amazing videos!
this is the best one yet lmao so many good bits and musings
Happy you are properly following the rules unemployment (excluding non residents, kids, etc.) instead of just counting who is or isn’t employed!
I really want to see this channel take off. It feels like you put more effort into your videos and ideas than most big name UA-camrs. Your efforts and creativeness does not go unnoticed by us
Ah yes Brokeback Cerulean a classic love story
I just wanted to specifically shoutout the intro jingle (0:20). It's so pleasant. Great job on that 😌
I like how you put the shadow of the employment status in the game too looks great!
The greatest enemy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Heteronormativity.
You forgot the bike girl and also Mr Hyper does have a job, he trains your pokemon
Great video! I love these employment surveys, please keep making them 🙏
Ur only getting better at this, this one was really refined and super fun to watch
the old guy and buff guy the way you described reminded me 100% of a clockwork orange LOL
Just stumbled upon this series and it absolutely smacks of public policy/urban planning master's student who loves video games and has too much time on his hands, A+
I only started watching about a month ago but I'm loving your videos! My first was the skyrim restaurant video, and I immediately knew I was going to enjoy what you do. I've binged a bunch of your other videos, and I really enjoy your style of commentary and the ideas you've created.
I really love the calm presentation of these videos.
the pen clicks at 7:43 are INCREDIBLE storytelling
He forgot the Guard of Cerulean Cave, he is employed and clearly lives in Cerulean City in order to guard the cave.
I still haven't recovered from the Mulan rant last time and here we have another
#blessed
“Wow we have a child training a bomb!” Breaking the suspension of disbelief around pokemon never gets old lmao
i really hope you do more of this, through all of kanto and maybe even going to other regions? would be really cool to see!
Seeing this in my notifications is like receiving today's newspaper and checking out the census of each city in Kanto, along with other current events by other Pokètubers.
Keep it up! I hope your efforts at the Bureau is being rewarded handsomely. Looking forward to the coverage of Celadon, Saffron, and Fuschia soon!
Something about these videos, they're cathartic to watch, very easy to listen to, I'm very much interested in what's being said. You're doing a good job sir..... oh, 11:11 and thank you for looking after me lol
I am possessed by a deep craving for ever more of these labor statistics videos.
I am definitely an average census enjoyer. I'd be interested in seeing some of the post-wartime recovery statistics for communities like Hateno Village in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
"adult lullabye composer" XD perfect. your videos are always so great. thank you.
The area where bill lives is known as a date spot people travel to, if you include the firered/leafgreen NPCs
"Woah a bomb" caught me so off guard
