I've always maintained the Call Me Maybe is a huge banger. Carly's vocals literally sound like she's smiling the entire time and really convey the feeling of flirtiness. And the chorus strings! My god, the strings!
In every single song of hers, you can really hear her smiling and that melts my heart every time. God, I love her so much.

I think it's a miracle that Somebody That I Used To Know became as popular as it did on the pop charts given how different it was from all the other hits of the time. It's so understated, yet sure of itself. It wasn't gaudy dance pop but it managed to resonate just as loudly.
Being in highschool and hearing it non stop made me think i hated it and now hearing it i always am surprised how good it really is

Personally, I think the production on We Are Young really works in the song's favor. It sounds so loud and cramped, just like a crowded bar full of shitfaced people going crazy. Even Janelle Monae's feature works for me, because it's like she's the love interest that gets drowned out by the party, which fits the lyrics of the song.
Aim and Ignite is still a way better album than Some Nights, I maintain that it's one of the best pop albums of all time.

Its been 10 years.
The lead singer hated the fame and stopped releasing music altogether from Gotye soon after just so he could get less coverage. Just made music with his friends in another band and for fun. Its a shame because he had a really unique style that would made many bangers.
Call me maybe is so iconic, just hearing that violin play those 3 notes will instantly take you back.
I miss how the song would put people in a good mood 🤗

I remember hearing Call Me Maybe on the radio all the time when I was in junior high and absolutely hating it. I thought I was "too tough" and "too cool" to like a song like that. Now that I'm an adult, I can really appreciate just how well crafted of a pop song it is. It's absolutely adorable and extremely catchy and fun. I totally understand why it was as massive as it was.
I never hated the song but like I was definitely not a fan of mainstream pop music at the time and only listened to 90s rap. Fast forward a decade later and now I’m a huge Carly rae jepsen fan and ended up buying VIP tickets for her current tour😂

The entire Making Mirrors album from Gotye is so fuckin underrated. Everyone always seems to talk about him like he's a one hit wonder but he's got so many other good songs. Making Mirrors might actually be my favourite album from 2011

Some of his songs are just so good, for example Heart's a Mess and Eyes Wide Open
being an one hit wonder doesn't mean he's a bad artist, just as having lots of hits doesn't mean an artist is good. there are a lot of one hit wonders out there whose music is pretty solid overall despite not achieving the same recognition, gotye is definitely one of them. now just look at drake, he has lots of hits and most of his singles chart pretty high... and yet his career has been extremely mediocre for years now.
Still in my top 5 albums of all time, hearing it on iTunes when it came out absolutely transcded me. Making Mirrors will always remain the soundtrack of one of the best years of my life.
Call Me Maybe and Somebody That I Used to Know was overplayed to the point of annoyance during their released but definitely aged like fine wine.

"Paolo Cruz" More reasons to add why 2012 was an amazing year for mainstream music. Also, around that time Lana Del Rey got mainstream which brought Indie Pop to be mainstream and was a backlash to the club boom of the Late 00's Early 2010s . A year later, the genre would blow up due to the success of Lorde's Royals which is imo the Smells Like Teen Spirit of the 2010's.
To me, Alternative Pop being a backlash to the club boom with artists such as Pitbull and Flo Rida is like how Nirvana ended Hair Metal in the 1990s imo

Azealia Banks - "212"
Until this year per a UA-camrs' video about 2010's hits, I'm not sure I even knew this song back in the day unless it was just briefly in passing. However, after hearing it, I'm sad I didn't know it. Despite Azealia's terrible views and personality, the song is such a banger. The production and beat transitions are flawless, the lyrics are so hard hitting and only seem to increase in intensity through the song. It's truly a track that was far ahead of its time for the lane it was in. 9/10

2012 was unreal Nostalgia wise, seeing these songs turn a decade old hits different.
Year I graduated highschool, was too busy being a born in "Le Wrong Generation" teen to even give any of these songs a chance (except Gotye cuz it sounded like 80s music 🤣)
This Fantano series is so fun, I love going over these songs and getting nostalgia from these tracks I used to listen to back then!

I wasn't a fan of that song originally when I heard it, I mean, I was graduating high school in 2012 and I wanted to hear Avenged Sevenfold and System of a Down and shit but I'd always had a pop side to me and when I discovered Carly's album EMOTION, I was floored. I thought it was better 80s pop than The Weeknd. The Weeknd still slaps but I'm a huge Carly fan.

I remember when Lights released in like late 2010 I was playing OG one nonstop until the Bassnectar remix dropped. I still think that remix is the pinnacle of pop EDM remixes from that era.
EDM was crazy in 2012. Calvin Harris released too many hits and bangers that year and “18 Months” was a success.
I turned 21 in 2012 and so that's when I started hearing all these songs in awful college bars, so these all have pretty strong nostalgia value for me.
Gotye's Making Mirrors and Like Drawing Blood are absolute gems, well worth a listen if anyone hasn't heard them all the way through

Im currently going to school at Full Sail University for Recording arts and im learning alot about production and mixing and just improving my critical listening skills. This has been a fun series to watch because my critical listening skills have gotten better so its fun to hear all these old songs from my childhood and realize how dated some of these songs are but goddamn re listening to tracks like “Bad Romance” and “Somebody that I used to know”, its amazing to hear how well these songs hold up today! Fun stuff Anthony!
Appreciate the Gotye love! I highly recommend trying out his 2 albums, personally I like a lot of those tracks way more than his most famous song. I hope he’ll return someday!

2012 actually was a good year. I will always associate Death Grips' music with extreme heat and the smell of house paint from listening to Ex-Military and The Money Store while painting houses in Arizona that summer.
I wasn’t really into pop music as a kid (I was entering my preteens in 2012) but the very first joke I made in Minecraft was covering a friends house in torches, laughing through the lyrics “baby you light up my world like nobody else”

2008-2013 were amazing years, but the peak of it was 2012, definitely a crazy year for me, especially because I was young and was basically hearing these bops as well as other hits from prior years that I missed out on and never heard. Also hip-hop/rap albums were also pulling out bangers. Man that year was filled up with adrenaline.

Carley Rae Jepsen is an amazing artist. One thing I love about her is that her sound and quality have been consistent. She has set some trends but she also just does whatever she wants.
For me 2012 is forever defined by Tame Impala's Lonerism. Life changing album for me.
My biggest claim to fame is that Carly Rae Jepsen’s bandmate tavish sold me some skinny jeans when I was in middle school
I’d say the production on we are young gets the job done, the opening drum beat is extremely recognizable (was a TikTok trend) and the snare gives the song a lot of drive. Also a pretty memorable vocal performance especially when he exclaims “I just thought” and of course the chorus is killer. Easy S tier for me.
Glad to see “Somebody That I Used to Know” getting the love it deserves! Such a beautiful track with great vocals , killer chemistry, and a certain baroque melancholy that’s practically impossible to find in any other modern pop songs.

Call Me Maybe is awesome I’ve been listening to it proudly these past few weeks. While my friends are still stuck in their ‘ew pop’ phase, my sister and I have never been closer in our music tastes thanks to our revisit with that song and I cannot be happier. You really start to realise, ironically as derivative and mainstream as Pop attends to be, there really is an ‘elite’ in pop music that stands the test of the time past all the filth, looking at you Chainsmokers

Call Me Maybe and Somebody That I Used To Know could not be more different songs, but because both of them were written, constructed, and produced so magnificently they both wound up being surprise dominant smashes.
I'm still blown away that Somebody That I Used To Know was the mega smash it was because it was from an artist that was unknown to the US and it didn't sound anything like what was popular at the time.

theres really like 3/4 songs i’d give a 9/10 or above (die young, lights, Somebody that i used to know), and it competes with 2018 for the weakest ten best hit songs. for comparison 2011 had eight 9/10s and 2013 had six
edit: going through 2018, it had a LOT more good songs than i remember (a lot more than 2012 as well). 2010/2019 might be the closest thing to 2012 but even then i think their lists are better

We are young is obviously mid, but some nights is a modern gem no cap
fun. in general is underrated as hell, I wish we'd gotten more out of them before they imploded. Some Nights is still one of my favorite albums

Both Somebody That I Used to Know and Call Me Maybe are extremely nostalgic to me but for different reasons. The Gotye one I loved from the start and I was really glad that it stuck around for so long. Listening to it felt like participating in something legendary, kind of like what I'd imagine a 12-year-old boy would feel while hearing idk Stairway to Heaven in 1971.
Call Me Maybe on the other hand was this annoying pop tune that was catchy but also too candy for my taste at that time. I associate it with parodies mostly, be it some Minecraft one or the one about Mario sung to me by that slightly awkward goofy friend. I rediscovered this tune maybe 2 years ago and I love it! Really takes me back
I feel like I’m the only person who’d ever put We Are Young in S tier. Nate Ruess is amazing, the lyrics are great, the song is a timeless classic.

Looking back, 2012 was a HUGE shift into the current state of pop music. A lot of the music on this list is still relevant today, and the days of electro pop and pitbull felt so far behind it.
I listened to the pop hits of the 2010’s in order to prepare for this, and 2012 was definitely my FAVORITE. Hit after hit after hit!
