I have watched videos of this machine hundreds of times, and of The Big Muskie dragline, and other machines over the years. I still do and they never cease to amaze and impress me. They all are engineering and manufacturing marvels. It is very sad that most are gone, now, torn down and scrapped.

The company I worked for supplied the gases to scrap this beautiful shovel. My brother and I was the last people to walk thru it only minutes before it was cut up. We had our cameras in case we got the opportunity . Sure glad we did! Got a lot of great pics that cold afternoon.

This may be your best one yet.
Still hard to believe she's gone, and we can't just drive down there and spend another weekend with her, as we did so many times.
We had an invite to go down into the pit, but never managed to connect on it. Too late now...
    Thanks!!!
    Dave

The Spade had seen better days, here, but was still doing the job, digging, hoisting and relocating, a couple of hundred, or more tons of material, over and over, with ease. I can turn the volume down to almost nothing, and this will put me to sleep. To me, there is something calming about watching the smooth, deliberate motions of this super powerful, iconic, machine.

Pretty cool! I live in Kansas and went to visit Big Brutus last weekend. I'm grateful we have it to enjoy. The Silver Spade was tremendous and of course bigger, but sadly she's gone. 😢

Aint that what coal companies do? Even to the men, when you quit functioning they can you.

@@tdv1985 There used to be a thing called the Social Contract and the public trust. Something that was eradicated by Reaganomics. And for what? To indulge the shareholder and usury class? Paying tithes to the false deity of trickle down economics.
Once the social contract and public trust are lost, then collapse is inevitable. The coal companies scrapped irreplaceable symbols of American industrial might. Our children will inherit nothing.

Operator appears to be very vulnerable to a boulder smashing through that cab

You would think with the tremendous girth of this monster it could at least triple the pay load.
