When I first got mine, it was feeding back, and the guys I play with, that do our sound said I needed to get another mic because it was too hot. I said no. We just tweaked the settings; three years later, I'm still using it without issue. Love it! We had 56, 3 hour gigs last year, and the same this year.I had to clean mine tonight. Just took it apart and cleaned it with warm water, Ajax lemon dish soap, and a small bottle brush that came with a water bottle for cleaning the straw. I considered red for the grill foam, but according to Shure, the blue is historically correct, corresponding to the model that was released 1951. We had our mics set up for a gig. They use Shure 58s. The engagement involved people needing to speak after we played. I took my microphone with me as I don't use a stand. When they tried to use one of the 58s, the speaker said it wasn't loud enough and wanted mine. It did the job, though each speaker had trouble figuring out where to hold it for best sound. I felt bad because it needed cleaning. 😅
True story: I got the same BS from a salesman in France. After a while, eventually wanted it again and bought it from a local store in New Orleans and it’s a work of art. The 58 is a classic and sounds great always, but the Super with a nice pre has a certain magic and characteristic that is just unique for strong voices!!! Mine is here to STAY!!!
I've been using mine for YEARS. If I were just using it for studio work, I would save money and buy an SM58 or maybe a good condenser mic. But for live gigs, folks LOVE how it looks and it is WELL worth the extra $$ to me. As to quality issues, It is my understanding that Shure was at one point selling a 55s series mic with a cheaper mic element, but I know mine has the same element as an SM58.
I just got a Super 55. I love it. Sounds brighter and clearer than my SM 58. Maybe your salesman was an idiot. From what I have read, the 55sh series II is a dog. Looks great, has a switch, BUT, it's capsule is based on the SM48. Not as good. The Super 55 is based on the Beta 58, but sounds better. I have also read that there is a Beta 87 upgrade for it.
I have a Shure 55sh series II and also the Shure SM58. I prefer this one and to my ear, it seems like this one has more fidelity. As far as looks are concerned, nothing can beat it.
I just tried putting a regular mic windscreen over the element. Frankly it did not work that great. Still got Shhh and Pops. I just hung a cotton handkerchief over the mic and it was perfect. Next i cut a piece for wind cover foam to just fit the front of the mic on the outside. And held it on with two rubber bands top an bottom. (Kinda Rub Goldberg for now) But it works great. So all the audience can maybe see is the two rubber bands from the back of the mic.
It’s interesting that the salesman would say the 55 would have more feedback than the 58... the 55 is supercardioid while the 58 is just cardioid, so gain before feedback would be presumably less on the 55 at worst just equal. There are plenty of valid reasons to pick up a 58 over a 55, but also valid reasons to grab a 55, sounds like the salesman was just prejudice.
The first would be price points. The 55 is 250 and a 58 is 100. So you could get 2.5 58s for 1 55. Sometimes you can think of mics like shoes some fit others better, so it’s a good idea to a-b test them and see what you like more. Like shoes some people have preferences for aesthetics, I have both the 58 and 55 and different people say they like the 55 or 58. They’re both great microphones and if you talk to people who like microphones they will know instantly what you’re talking about and probably show you a couple they have, though the 58 is far more common (probably because of the price point and the value per dollar). Though I don’t think it’s a reason to be snooty about a 55
I guess in short for me it’s all about who/what you’re recording and what sounds best. Steven Slate told a story about a U-47 that he bought for 6k put it on a singer and the singer preferred a $500 condenser over the 47. So get what you like, can afford, and think sounds good.
I hate both mic's, Shure sh 55 and Shure super 55 from 3 reasons: Lots of feedback in a studio (when you sing with other instruments), lot of popping, lot of muddy sound when yous sing louder. You can sing blues or jazz but i can't sing rock, for example. Was a totally waste of money, from my opinion.

these mics are the best for vocals, great sound and sturdy build
Thankyou for making this video
Thanks for sharing! If you ever got around to replacing the windscreen foam, would be awesome to see that as well. Cheers

I turn on my microphone and it doesn't work I don't know why 😭 just with 7 months I don't know what happen
Good info, thanks!
I was looking for some cleaning and maintenance aspects for the mic, I didn't know how to open it. Thanks!

Every voice is different, just try several mics and you'll find the best for you.
Is it worth over twice the cost of a 58 if it sounds only just as good?
Did you ever make the mod video?
I love the mic but the salesman might have been right about a few things
We are using one and it’s great.
I have one with a wireless mod! 😆🎙
That is an awesome mic, is that a ribbon microphone?
I love you dad
