Hello Steve, I'd like your advice on what rum in my local supermarkets I could buy. Normally I don't drink alcohol anymore (like at home) but my love for rum makes me wanna buy a bottle now :) aside from bumbu, which is too expensive here imo. Perhaps u could tell me which ones out of this list i should consider: sailor jerry spiced 80proof, brugal anejo superior, pampero seleccion, pampero anniversario, bacardi 8yr, appleton estate signature, rhum agricole, negrita rum, saint james.. There's a lot of choice, my fav for now that I consider are the bacardi 8yr, sailor jerry or pampero seleccion. I like 'real rum" alltho spiced rum I might enjoy the taste more. Thanks!
@@JOKER6979 The bottla looks great & i love spicy but it's real expensive here, like I can buy a Bacardi gran anejo 10yr or desperado reserva exclusiva, etc. for that price lol.
Yes, my son-in-law got me a bottle for my birthday a few years ago. This stuff is like liquid candy. It's really sweet but I occasionally buy a bottle because it's easy to sip casually.
I don't know, as someone who is new to trying rums, I was given a taste of this and thought it was incredible. I'd only ever tasted Morgan's spiced and couldn't stand that. I've also tried Diplomatico and love that too. You've brought up some good comparisons and peaked my interest so thanks
I try at least one bottle of something I’ve not tried before when I got alcohol shopping. Tried this years ago and it’s been my favorite rum since! I drink it over ice and it’s lovely to sip on. The crème (white bottle) is very different, but a fantastic mixer. The black bottle I didn’t care for at all.
Great review. Thanks Steve. I just received a bottle of Bumbu(from the US) tonight as a gift, which is why I'm watching your review video. I'm new to the RUM world and am very much looking forward to trying this bottle as well as some of the others you'd mentioned. I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Keep the great content coming.
Great rum. Its the 35% bottle. Shared with a few mates and they liked it too. I drink it straight, no ice. Just an after dinner sipper. Very good. Kinda like banoffee pie.
Yes I actually bought it today just because I heard once that someone recommended it as the first Rum to try if you never had a Rum and I thought we'll let's try it and I really love it.
Thanks for this Steve! We haven't seen it yet around here, but certainly heard the word. Sounds like there are a few others I'd jump at before it, but if it shows up, I'll give it some fair consideration.
I can't really call myself a connoisseur of rum, but honestly, I really DO enjoy Bumbu. Because I only have a drink occasionally the price point is fine it will last me a long time. But I find it very enjoyable. The first time I had rum was MANY years ago when I turned 21 for my birthday (I can triple that age now! ) was because it was a Beatle drink - Rum and coke. I just find Bumbu a very nice, and relaxing potion. I really love your reviews too.
Definitely had my fair share of Bumbu! However, since finding your channel, it has been a while since I’ve gone back to it as I continue to search for what my opinion as “the ultimate sipping rum” that I am telling myself must be “an ACTUAL rum”
Bumbu Is 29.99 a bottle in the US, Most of the plantations come in around 23-28 a bottle. Personally, I Don't care what they call Bumbu, I will drink it regardless. I think Bumbu Original is absolutely delicious. I keep 2 bottles at a minimum in my house just so I don't run out. Bumbu Original is one of my most replaced bottles in my collection right after the Flor de Cana 12yr and 18yr which are my top 2 replaced bottles.
With bumbu its difficult, but i like to have it in my rum collection. Because people who are not into rums, they tried Legendario and enjoyed it. Then bumbu is the best option to step up from there.
Just saw this vid, i have just started my rum journey and have bought a bottle of bumbu i love it, it is very good to drink neat and i think if you like it then just buy it. I dont worry about the science of it I just know if i like it or not. I dont worry about a couple of quid here or there for somthing that I like.
Just barely bought my first bottle. Paid $37 USD which I feel is a heavy price in comparison to some other Rums that compare in my opinion. The smell and the smoothness of this Rum is unmatched! But as far as flavor goes, I really love the banana notes, but overall the taste doesn’t blow me away! This makes for a very very good (yet sweet) Rum and Coke. I really like this Rum, but Due to the high price, I am giving this Rum a 6.5/10. Great video and I love all the facts that I would have never known
Thank you for doing this for the rum drinking community its what we need. I have seen this rum for sale and was indeed thinking about buying some. But alas it wont happen after you description and explanation. I have to consider what I can get that is better quality for round about the same price, so I will get some other brand.
"spirit drink" thats very intresting Steve.I was planning on buying a bottle of Bumbu on my next visit to the Liquor store, not anymore. Thanks for the video.Iam enjoying a Appleton 8 yr neat as I write this.
I just picked up a bottle to add to my rum collection. I didn’t have the room in my luggage to bring back a bottle from Barbados when I was there last month, so I bought the last (overpriced) bottle on the shelf today here in the Gulf region (yes, some Muslim countries actually sell alcohol).
Cheaper? Hmmmm. Only really stuff like a Captain Morgan’s, Kraken, Dead Mans Fingers, Bacardi Spiced, and probably supermarket own brands. Like Aldi has Cassario.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Thank You Love the taste of Bumbu. Have tried Don Papa and Red Leg and thry just dont seem to have the same sweet flavour. I am completely new to drinking Rum and loving trying differant brands. So far Bumbu is the best I have tried but at £30 a bottle it gets expensive when a bottle is only lasting about a week lol. Trying to find something with a simular sweetness at a slightly cheaper option for a more day to day drink and keep Bumbu as a special occasion drink Keep up the great videos, I have enjoyed watching and learning about the different styles and flavours and look forward to trying more Regards Phil
It’s still 35% ABV in the U.S. It’s useful as a vanilla-rum liqueur, and you can make some fun cocktails when you adjust for that expectation accordingly. But it’s also way too expensive for what it is.
I was playing aroud mixing Bumbu tonight with the goal of making inexpensive, lower alcohol, tasty sweet drinks. Basically, something better than a Soda pop and a way to use Bumbu for flavoring in small amounts so the $40 it cost goes a LONG way. The result was pretty amazing to my palate. I mixed 3 parts Red Wine to 1 part Bumbu to 6 parts milk, (I actually used coffee creamer!) and then added a bunch of sugar and a little bit of sea salt. You can play around with the ratios, but I'm telling you this was so good. A decent Red Wine and Bumbu in the right ratio taste amazing together. The fat in the milk, cream, or creamer really enhances and brings out the flavors of the Wine and Bumbu. A tiny amount of salt adds an extra layer of depth and enhances the mouth feel. And we all know what sugar does. I was shocked that I actually much prefered this drink I made more than the Red wine or Bumbu by themselves, and I LOVE both Bumbu and Red Wine by themselves. You gotta be real careful with the salt and only use tiny increments of it until it tastes perfect...trial and error. If you use too much salt you get Gatorade but with the perfect amount at its sweet spot, you cant tell theres salt in it but theres something extra enhanced.
I'm so glad you did this video, my wife keeps trying to get a bottle of bumbu for me while she's out and i keep saying about the price im not so sure, plus I also made the point that for a couple of quid extra I can get the rumbullion and omg I do love that. Nice to hear you break down each of the notes to the rum and I think I've saved wasting 30+ quid so thanks
I’m a HUGE bourbon drinker. I have around 100 bottles ranging from 40% all the way to 72%. I’ve tried diplomatico and I like it a lot. I’m wondering what I should get next haha
So, Diplomatico is one of the sweetest Rums on the Market. (I assume you mean the Reserva in the Green bottle?!), so it really depends. I'm surpirsed that is the one you picked out after being a Bourbon drinker as Bourbons wouldn't be that sweet...unless you had flavoured Bourbons. So, normally for Whiskey Drinkers, what i'd suggest is going straight in for Doorlys 12, Appleton 12, El Dorado 12...those kinda big hitters. But they will be unsweetened and very different to Diplomatico. So if that Reserva is your jam, then actually you may appreciate something like Santa Teresa, or an aged Don Q.
I feel like I need to get a bottle. There was this tierlist video that introduced me to Kraken and this appeared there too. Since Kraken was pretty good, I have high hopes for this one when I do get some
Yeah, I probably wouldn't even call it entry level. It's VERY different to Rum. It s a Better than Average Spiced Rum. I suppose the next step could be Don Papa or Diplo at the same sweetness...just without the Spices.
I tried Bumbu and really like it. Great flavor, although not as strong as I'd like. My main issue is the price. It's just too expensive for what you get.
I found this in Jamaica at 40% abv and it’s a tasty sweet spiced rum. Quite different than any other spiced rum I’ve ever had. Tastes like rum cake in a glass. Haven’t tried the 35% abv version I can get here in utah but I don’t think I’ll buy it for $37.
I have a bottle. I make a Bocci ball with it that my wife loves! Here in Maryland, it's $45 but I can get it on sale for $35. I usually break this out when I'm looking for an extra punch of vanilla in my cocktails. I haven't had it in a Daiquiri yet.
Interesting. As i said, I did prefer the 35%. I am wondering why they haven't done the 40% in the US. It;s weird cos in the US, Kraken is 47% and in UK 40%. Capt Morgs is 40% US, but 37.5% in UK. It's weird that Bumbu is the opposite way round.
Bumbu at 80 proof?? Interesting. I've only had the old 70proof. I don't think is bad at all, but in my mind I never really classified it as a Rum. It is much too sweet for me to drink often or neat for that matter. but I quite do like the candy and spice flavors it does have. Ice, Ice, Ice... is the trick to mellow it down. I ended up using most of my bottle in Rum all fashions, but with a twist, I substituted the simple syrups/sugars with 1oz. of Bumbu instead, and, Smith & Cross being my rum of choice for an old fashion with a punch. Not sure if I will be replacing that bottle, but summer time is coming and I am already craving some Smith & Cross with a touch of Bumbu blend!! Cheers!!!
For me, personally, I've only tried bacardi white and Bumbu. I personally much prefer sweeter rums and alcohol, so I like this although the price is a bit much. Where I live, though, it's easier to get Bumbu than most of the others you mentioned. It is also cheaper on the local military base close to where I live ;) so I'm lucky. I'll have to try some of these other recommendations though
I tried Bumbu 2 years ago, one of the first "rums" I explored. wasn't a big fan of the taste and wound up drinking it in presses. Kept the bottle which is what attracted me, kept it to reuse as a decanter for my goslings 151.
Can you review Rumbaclaat rum please, they're a British company based in Nottingham, their product is getting a lot of hype within the Caribbean community. Thanks 👍
Just bought a bottle from Tesco only because the rum selection in Tesco is crap and I wanted something to drink tonight I can’t wait to try Pussers. Can you give a list of kick off rums you think one should try to start off on I always get lost when I see morn than three bottles. Ta 👍
I much prefer Bumbu to Chairman’s Reserve Spiced, but then I prefer bananas to oranges, which are the overriding flavours I get from each. Great channel Steve!
hi there just subscribed enjoying your videos just watched your doorlys live vid interesting. im a single malt man and have dabbled in cognacs and rum in the past. i was looking through my collection and descided i fancied something other than whisky, so descided to order flor de cana 12 and doorlys xo 43% will these make ok sipping rums as a start of a rum journey not a fan of cocktails and dont really add coke so these will be drunk neat or with a touch of water. i realize there are better rums but i needed some were to start. also have you done a video on the flor de cana 12? thanks.
Your comment couldn’t be more perfect. Stay tuned…5pm UK on Tuesday. 12yo Sipping Rum overview 👍👍 both of those are great…just bear in mind, very different. DXO is finished in Sherry Cask. Sherry Cask Rum for me is totally different to Sherry Cask Whisky. Sweeter and Fruitier. But I love both.
Thanks for the reply they will arrive tomoz and will update once ive tried them am i right in thnking that the flor de cana 12 and some other 12yr rums are not 12 yrs in the same sense as a whisky. Ie a whisky the youngest whisky would be a 12 but with some rums it can be that the oldest whisky is a 12.
They “should” be exactly the same. But yeah, you’re right. It’s not all clear. But 95% of Rums are open. Even Ron Zacapa has gone from 23yo on the bottle to sistema 23 Solera in a bid to be more honest. These days…as I say, if it physically says 12 year old. 95% (probs 99%) of rums will have a minimum of 12yo rum in them. But in an actual like for like. 12yo Tropical aging with be close to 18-24yo continental aging. Cos of the climate and humidity, hot climate rum takes on characteristics a lot quicker than say Whisky from Scotland. A 5yo Doorlys will have those similar Cask characteristics to a 12-15yo Whisky.
@@StevetheBarmanUK i think i read some where that becaue of climate 6 to bout 14 yrs makes a good age for a rum. I know there are alot older out there but im sure i read it somewhere a good examlpe in the whisky world would be 3 ships 12 which is a south african whisky.
Ok, thank you for posting this. I’m always so hesitant to even buy any spiced because quite frankly most are terrible! I can’t get Pusser’s spiced where I am. But the tip on the Chairman’s will do! I’ll skip the Bumbu and do the Chairman’s! Thank you Steve!
I like Bumbu quite a bit, but I do think the price is a bit excessive. Really nice packaging is part of why, but I’d have hoped the producer would be gentler with the domestic market (it’s produced a few hours drive from me).
I can detect zero rum in this product, but I do detect loads of Werther’s original and Brach’s butterscotch candies. I assume there are UK equivalents of these.
Yes, I have tried Bumbu. Here in Virginia it retails for $35.99/750 ml. Though drinkable, it in no way compares to Appleton Estate Signature(A proper rum) at $21.99/750 ml.
@@nateross14 Bumbu may be better than Appleton Signature (FKA XV). Don’t know if you’re touting Bumbu Original or Bumbu XO. XO can compete, though not necessarily surpass Appleton 8(FKA Reserve Blend). IMHO there is no Bumbu that even come close to Appleton Estate Rare Cask(FKA Appleton 12). YMMV! Tastes in distilled spirits is a very personal thing. I have tried many rums, from varied Caribbean locations, but I have yet to find one better than Appleton Estate Rare Blend(FKA Appleton 12). I have not tried Plantation 5, but I have doubts that it would be better than Appleton 8 nor Appleton 12. Again, taste is a very personal thing and YMMV. UBU, and I’m gonna be me. ✌🏻
@@billhudson50 I'm referring to Original Bumbu. Haven't Tried any of the other Appletons, only Singnature so can't comment on those. But in your original comment you said Signature was better than Bumbu and I highly disagree. I agree that taste is subjective. To me Signature just tastes like strange Molasses. I don't hate it, but everytime I drink it I can't decide if I like it or not, and then finally decide it's not that enjoyable for me. But yeah it's all just opinion and preference. I just don't want a newbie to think they would like Signature over Bumbu. I'd you did a blind taste test with average people, 90percent would easily pick Bumbu over Signature by a far shot.
@@skittles074 i have never seen Doorly's bottles like that. Doorly's usually have brand name in very visible in label. And there is normal Doorly's bottles in the upper shelf, but those 3 bottles never seen before.
It makes great rum balls. I dont think it would work for a daiquiri unless its a banana daiquiri. Its a celebrity rum so probably priced higher for that reason even though most dont care.
@@StevetheBarmanUK funny you mentioned that reading reviews from the local online and every low score have the similar “I prefer the original Bumbu it is smoother and easier to drink. This is harsher and does not taste the same”. Just goes to show there is still lots of education that could be made to inform the customer
Id drink it more often. Sadly this 55proof is 48 Euros here. Thats roughly 50 USD. And we dont have as wide of a selection when it comes to rums. This is the best I can get. Alcohol taxation and regulations in Finland is highest in EU.

@@StevetheBarmanUK I haven't had it yet, but the Bumbu XO is 40%. I wonder if that's part of the reason they haven't made the other a higher ABV.
@@StevetheBarmanUK tried the Daiquiri this evening. That was great! Thanks for the suggestion!
Love Bumbu with pineapple juice
Ni I haven't tried it. You read my mind about this question, I was about to text you this
This is drinkable from the bottle. You don't need a chaser or cocktail. But it goes decent with dr pepper
Yes, literally just bought a bottle to drink around the fire with my homie and my girlfriend🔥🥃
Cheers!!!
I think that could be genius. That touch of Funk alongside the Bumbu. Kinda cool twist!
Let us know if you do try any 👍
My first bottle I ever bought. Still love it
I tried Bumbu 2 years ago, one of the first "rums" I explored. wasn't a big fan of the taste and wound up drinking it in presses. Kept the bottle which is what attracted me, kept it to reuse as a decanter for my goslings 151.
Ha, The surprise kick from the Rum when Guests come round!
Can you review Rumbaclaat rum please, they're a British company based in Nottingham, their product is getting a lot of hype within the Caribbean community. Thanks 👍
I personally like tasting the alcohol. Sailor Jerry or kraken with a splash of a mixer or straight is my go to.
Just bought a bottle from Tesco only because the rum selection in Tesco is crap and I wanted something to drink tonight I can’t wait to try Pussers.
Can you give a list of kick off rums you think one should try to start off on I always get lost when I see morn than three bottles.
Ta 👍
Download my Freebie! It's got loads of stuff on that for you. stevethebarman.com/ebook
Just got your recommendations list 👍 and also Pussers spiced and chairman’s spiced happy day and just in time for the weekend
a great bottle also. i reuse all mine
Yes tried but wood's navy rum is the best!
Yes! I love Bumbu it's really great.
My wife and I keep 2 bottles of this in the house at all times!!
Why?
Also, isn’t kraken from Angostura in Trinidad? I believe they are clear about that. But I may be getting bad information
I much prefer Bumbu to Chairman’s Reserve Spiced, but then I prefer bananas to oranges, which are the overriding flavours I get from each.
Great channel Steve!
Thanks for swinging by my friend! You should try the new Plantation Spiced... Canerock! Thats epic!
hi there just subscribed enjoying your videos just watched your doorlys live vid interesting. im a single malt man and have dabbled in cognacs and rum in the past. i was looking through my collection and descided i fancied something other than whisky, so descided to order flor de cana 12 and doorlys xo 43% will these make ok sipping rums as a start of a rum journey not a fan of cocktails and dont really add coke so these will be drunk neat or with a touch of water. i realize there are better rums but i needed some were to start. also have you done a video on the flor de cana 12?
Have you tried the peaky blinders? Could you do your stuff with a bottle of it?
It's old, but... ua-cam.com/video/dyKfKWPUjrQ/v-deo.html
Deffo Chairmans. 100%. Is the go to Spiced for most Rum Lovers.
I like Bumbu quite a bit, but I do think the price is a bit excessive. Really nice packaging is part of why, but I’d have hoped the producer would be gentler with the domestic market (it’s produced a few hours drive from me).
And I’ve tried the Bumbu XO as well, also nice but even more pricey. I admit I never tried either mixed with more than a couple of cubes of ice.
Need to take a look at the XO. I believe (although not sure cos not looked) that actually IS Rum. Not Spiced?!
@@StevetheBarmanUK don’t know either, but it’s more subtle.
I'm gonna pick up a bottle of this for Christmas to mix with eggnog. Anyone done this, and was it good? I realize most anything mixes fine with eggnog
I’ve always thought it was kinda like a pre bottled spiced-rum take on an old fashioned. Didn’t know it was technically a spirit drink.
Hope to try it soon
I can detect zero rum in this product, but I do detect loads of Werther’s original and Brach’s butterscotch candies. I assume there are UK equivalents of these.
U said it’s a flavoured spirit drink but if u look up a bit on the bottle where u pointed it literally says rum on the bottle
£28 in my local. Can drink it all day. So smooth. And sweet. But at 40g per litre not surprising!
Yes , live in Australia, thought it was delicious. I swear a tasted a hint of banana in there too
Where I live the label just says "rum with natural flavors" , the same as Capt Morgan
Ha...see in the UK and Europe... Capt Morgs doesn't even have "Rum" on the Label. It's a Spirit Drink!
Yes.. so good. It’s like candy!
Yes, I have tried Bumbu. Here in Virginia it retails for $35.99/750 ml. Though drinkable, it in no way compares to Appleton Estate Signature(A proper rum) at $21.99/750 ml.
Bumbu is way better IMO than Appleton Signature. Appleton is not that great. Plantation 5 year blows the Appleton out of the water too.
Love the only fools and horses sign 🤷🏻♂️
Its really good on its own with ice :)
what brand of rum are those 3 parrot rums next to black tears rum in bottom row? never seen those in here where i am from.
Doorly's
@@skittles074 i have never seen Doorly's bottles like that. Doorly's usually have brand name in very visible in label. And there is normal Doorly's bottles in the upper shelf, but those 3 bottles never seen before.
@Sykoorus Yes I see what you mean now, they're called "one eyed rebel" the ones you're looking at.
@@skittles074 ah yes that's it. i like the bottles but not sure about that rum
@@Sykoorus I guess you'll have to try em out? 😂
Yes, it s the best for my taste! ❤️
So interesting, we do not have that on the labeling note here in the US! Cheese and crust 40 grams is insane.
You don't have "Rum with Natural Flavours" on the front of the bottle? Thought that was a standard across all countries.
@Steve the Barman That statement yes but the one you have on the back where it says Spirit, we do not. I thought yours only said Spirit.
Have to try canerock rum
Never tried it but its at a large chain store so it has arrived
Yes, it’s too sweet for my liking
Bumbu is one of my favorites, I actually found the 40 abv smoother than the 37
I just purchased à bottle here in Canada (Quebec), and its at 35% alcool. Love it with coke
I probably would replenish the 35% if I could get it. Deffo not the 40% though. Shame!
From the few spiced rums I've tried, rumbullion is easily the best massive step up from bumbu
It makes great rum balls. I dont think it would work for a daiquiri unless its a banana daiquiri. Its a celebrity rum so probably priced higher for that reason even though most dont care.
Yes, I very much enjoy it
Love the X.O.
by far my favorite. I just drink it straight out the bottle stuffs mint.
Yes, I have tried it. Got to say I wasn't too keen on it.
Deffo prefer the older 35% ABV version
Great Video. I was surprised.. it is NOT A RUM. Marketing HYPE.. the bottle looks killer, the contents is CRAP.
its only 35% here in canada
Yes - it's my favourite spiced rum, closely followed by Cut to The Spice
Having watched the video, I'll try out pusser's and chairmans and see what I think
I do love Cut To. That's great!
Best rum rap ever 👍🤑
We have to ability to buy the Bumbu XO locally. Might think about it, its a 40% aged in sherry cask
Yeah. Not looked. But from Memory, the XO is Rum, not Spiced. 👍
@@StevetheBarmanUK funny you mentioned that reading reviews from the local online and every low score have the similar “I prefer the original Bumbu it is smoother and easier to drink. This is harsher and does not taste the same”.
Just goes to show there is still lots of education that could be made to inform the customer
It's all in the cool bottle $$$
Well excuse me, but I do like it! And I do drink it neat.
In Canada with the bottle I'm looking at right now has the 35% on it
Id drink it more often. Sadly this 55proof is 48 Euros here. Thats roughly 50 USD. And we dont have as wide of a selection when it comes to rums. This is the best I can get. Alcohol taxation and regulations in Finland is highest in EU.
Steve! Where's your Bumbu RumX review??? (35% preferably)
Haha, okay, I'll add it soon!
