Even after Michelle rose to the top, I would say that Lu Lu was still more beautiful. She was so elegant and musical. No matter what she skated to, she made me believe it and not many skaters can do that. She just has "it."
That was a beautiful program. Didn't know that it waw choreographed by Toller Caranston, but watch it again it does have his style. Interestingly it does not look so flamboyant as a Toller skate, instead it is elegant while joyful. Great job for both the program and the costume!
I agree with azsk8fan regarding the spirals. Chen Lu should be the model for skating; simplicity of moves, without excessive moves or Cirque du Soleil tricks that the young ones do nowadays. Her carriage across the ice and the posture of her back are great to watch.
The best choreographers do not try and put skaters into their own mold with the programs they make for them. They try to give skaters a program that best suits their own style and strengths. Toller must know Lu is not the same type of skater as him and it would be silly to give her a program that was the type he would skate. He instead gives her a program that suits her style beautifully. That is what a good choreographer does.
Kwan and chen lu were always the best artistically, in my opinion... no one before or since can touch them...and they skate so differently, so it's nice to enoy both distinct styles. Kwan is more raw emotion, and chen is more lyrical elegance. I love them both.
@smartskater1 this program wasnt great. Her combo jumps was wild and shaky, a triple toe is simpler, her spins werent great. I would say 3rd place in the short was plenty generous. Kwan who was 5th probably had a superior short, Bobek did by far, and Markova did as well.
In today's system, she would for sure have her Lutz deemed under rotated. Actually, she'd be lucky to not have it downgraded to a double, as it was for sure a half rotation short. I don't know why the judges didn't at all care about that in those days. She so obviously landed that jump facing completely forward; that totally should have been a deduction.
She has a reputation of under rotation on her jumps. Weak program, way tooo much 2 foot skating, her circular step sequence was nonexistent. 5.4. And 5.6
lutz underrotated...toe lop easy jump...technicly it didn t deserve more than 5.4 or 5.5. 5.8 from the chinese judge was ridiculous...artisticly good but not a good spiral sequence. for me 5.4 and 5.6. markova bobeck and kwan were better
I don't like her style or consider it gracious, spectacular or correct. She seems like a nervous grasshopper most of time, and the irony is that her jumps aren't big, at all.

@Mai Tandy Why are you talking about Sasha when my post was comparing Chen and Kwan?
I love her interpretation. She really feels the music and understands the importance of each move.

sandra bezic's choreography was the most sophisticated i've ever seen.
Beautiful Love the Layback

@koolaidnhemlock True, but Toller Cranston choreographed her programs for the 95 season. Sandra Bezic choreographed her programs 96-98.

5.5 and 5.7. 4th of the sp
