40k becomes more depressing when you realize that even during the great crusade, it was the equivalent of post roman era Atilla the hun barbarians reconquering earth with half broken modern day weapons and equipment. I say the main point of contrast is that during the great crusade things were actually improving , if slowly, and the future seemed bright, whereas post heresy everything is in decline and totally fucked.
I mean, in comparison to the modern Imperium it was a damn utopia.

I wouldn't say he's a complete monster, more so ruthlessly pragmatic. Though it's hard to get an honest image of the emperor's character when most of the time he's seen through the eyes of characters who either idolize or despise him.
You should've added the image of the wounded emperor sitting upon the golden throne to finalize it and give that real "grimdark" feel.

Amazing. The song and how the pictures transitioned from the Great Crusade all the way up to the Horus Heresy and the current state of the universe really managed to capture the grim darkness that separates 40k from other (mainstream) sci fi universes
I'm happy that Rylanor's picture is in it. All alone for millenia, entrapped within a tomb of a desolated world, both his robotic and human bodies broken, harassed and tempted by a demon he used to call "father" and surrounded by chaos sorcerers. Still, his soul remained unbroken: he still had his honor relentlessly shining against the darkness and even reclaimed the greatness of the Emperor's Children of old - and ended up turning traitor marines to his cause and humiliating a creature made out of pure pride. That was undoubtedly one of the best sci-fi tales of all times.

Hell, the only change is that they weren't fanatics, it was just some regular tyrant wanting to own everything because he had a big ego and tought he'd be the hero, but he rly screwed that up by treating his children like tools, huh?
