I think it's so scary because, as someone said in the above comments, it feels very sinister that these obviously (mostly) unintelligent forces of nature are cognizant of at least a fraction of who they were. Also, when you consider how benign the overwhelming majority of them are just ambling around, the variants are so much more dangerous than the normal walkers are with a layer of unpredictability - like that doorknob scene. It's the same reason that, in my opinion, the anime/manga Attack on Titan introduced the variant titans in the very early episodes - it adds a further level of mystery to the whole thing that is palpable in the narrative. A smaller, underlying "WHY" since we aren't made aware by the story as to "why anything is REALLY happening.
I remember that that horrified me the most as a kid I was watching that at the age of 15 and watching a walker smash a window to get to the main characters was actually more surprising
Those walkers got retconned. The show switched show runners after season 3 I believe it was. It wasn't until later on that they decided that they'd try to bring up intelligent walkers again. But yeah. Basically because of that, walkers like Morgan's wife and the brick walker are now questionably canon in terms of whether or not they were variants.
Daryl Dixon's Varients are actually my favorite ones. Sadly, this was the only show that explored the idea and brought something new to the table for the TWD Universe.

I imagine the virus is now reworking the bodies or even regenerating some of the lost tissue or organs to get the sudden gain in intellect, speed, or both. @@allenking8678 the reason why they can't explain it isn't because its hard to, its because it makes no sense. when the zombie virus takes over, their heart never starts. the only thing they should have control over is their brain stem and muscles. but their tissue somehow retains itself for years? that makes no sense. your heart needs to be pumping blood to it or else it will completely rot within a few months, and then the zombie would never be able to walk again. also walkers shouldn't be able to subconsciously breathe, because their heart has stopped beating, although you can just make the argument that the virus forces them to breathe so that they can use their vocal chords to attract herds. but yeah this show is super unrealistic
I'm rewatching it and I just realized that there were alwayss variant walkers, in season one when they're stuck in the building in Atlanta, one of the walkers pick up a stone and break the glass, it's so interesting

There were some variant walkers is season 1, the walker that used to be Morgan's wife knew how to use the door, there were walkers that were able to use stones to break the glass to get into the shop and Rick amd Glenn had to run from the walkers once their disguise had been washed of by the rain, then some were able to climb the fence
I think that is more just an incontinuity, writers/directors probs realized they could do more of the walkers were more dumb (closer calls, bc if the walkers have ability to have range attacks, run, kneel down, etc a lot of situations woulda turned out a whole lot different)

My personal theory is that: Because the virus was new in early seasons, it was just able to kill the host but not 'completely' take over the brain. They had their muscle memory with them. As to why people don't do stuff like earlier when they just died is probably because virus grew stronger over the years.
Reminds me of zombies in resident evil. There is a scary fact about them. RE zombies are not "living dead", they're still alive and fully comprehend, what is happening. But the deterioration of their bodies and continuing brain damage drives them insane. They're alive people, stuck in a decaying body I know it's unrelated, but since i found it out, it lives in my mind rent free and pops up every time i see a zombie doing something remotely intelligent.
Seeing all the normal walkers for decades thinking thats the worst its ever going to get and then you get the zombies that know how to use their hands and the rage beasts and the one that got calcified it may take time but this is why you don't drop youre guard around them.
I have a theory about in season one why they were valiant walkers. I think they vaguely remembered him in life and so they remembered the human motor skills and so that’s why they were able to claim fences and stuff, but when they got older and adapted, they also remembered stuff and adapted to seeing humans so many times.

If I'm not mistaken, they would make an extra scene that would have a walker picking up a gun and shooting, that would be terrifying and I would be scared of an intelligent walker.
I think the scariest Walker would be one that’s quiet…muffled grunts. One that amidst it’s fellow walkers running about aimlessly. one that simply walks in a dead straight line, as if it were an assassin and retained it’s skills
The first iterations of variants are more terrifying, as they seem to regain basic functionality with their upper body (hands, arm strength) utilizing this and adding the later versions just makes a Dying Light 1 & 2 viral zombie, as they’re not as badly contorted as the volatiles.
This would have been genius to do about season 5-6 of the main show. They deviated from the comic so much at that point it was a completely different thing anyway. They could have explained it as the virus mutating into a more effective form that all walkers carried, so while there were still old, slow walkers new ones would turn into runners. That coupled with the negan arc and war being handled better could have given the show a whole new life.
See zombies that hunt other zombies is such an interesting concept, because there's so much meat literally walking around and yes it's taineted but its still meat
It's probably because their cognitive functions are still partially intact which allows them to walk. Maybe more of that section is still in tact allowing them to learn, which would explain why they herd and head towards sound

I actually like the more intelligent walkers, it brings that uneasy feeling where its like it is a monster but theres a part of human still in there

If I'm not mistaken, they would make an extra scene that would have a walker picking up a gun and shooting, that would be terrifying and I would be scared of an intelligent walker.
Variant walkers now are apparently are sometimes acidic or are a bundle of merged zombies creating a huge beast.
Zombies that run will always be more scary than zombies that walk.
Think of walkers as Cavemen, they might not have the big brains like us but they surely knew how to use them.

I think the scariest Walker would be one that’s quiet…muffled grunts. One that amidst it’s fellow walkers running about aimlessly. one that simply walks in a dead straight line, as if it were an assassin and retained it’s skills

The first iterations of variants are more terrifying, as they seem to regain basic functionality with their upper body (hands, arm strength) utilizing this and adding the later versions just makes a Dying Light 1 & 2 viral zombie, as they’re not as badly contorted as the volatiles.
This would have been genius to do about season 5-6 of the main show. They deviated from the comic so much at that point it was a completely different thing anyway. They could have explained it as the virus mutating into a more effective form that all walkers carried, so while there were still old, slow walkers new ones would turn into runners. That coupled with the negan arc and war being handled better could have given the show a whole new life.
See zombies that hunt other zombies is such an interesting concept, because there's so much meat literally walking around and yes it's taineted but its still meat
It's probably because their cognitive functions are still partially intact which allows them to walk. Maybe more of that section is still in tact allowing them to learn, which would explain why they herd and head towards sound
