Yeah, I have that, too. It's out of phase maybe? You have two humbuckers, that's strange to sound like a wah. I have a JB and a P90 and it sounds odd in the middle. Cheers, man. Your imperfections in craftsmanship make you more human to us. Your playing is still stellar! Out of this world!
It looks great man , painting takes time to perfect ive been doing it for 20 years and i messed up a million things to learn from my mistakes. 98% of people are unmotivated or scared to try things like this or step outta the box and you did just that , I think its badass!
3 times outstanding!: the sound, your playing, and the upgrade. Great job, especially if this your first time. btw, your a cool and modest dude. The reason for the thin sound in the middle position: pups are out of phase (either rewire one of them, or turn one of them 180 degrees).
Hell yeah! I get that idea sometimes: get something like a GRG7221 or a used 7321 and just give it a swirl paintjob, new pickups, new nut, saddles, and tuners.
Oh man, when you just started sanding down the original paint I felt sick, and it got worse when I saw you decided to paint over the binding... And then the yellow paint! But now... Holly shift! It looks amazing! I never thought I would like a color like that on a guitar but it definitely looks fantastic
I think you did nothing wrong with the pick ups. I have a GRG121X that sounds exactly the same weird in the middle position. Loved that project btw! We're waiting for more!
Amazing work!!!! This Ibanez looks BRUTALLLLL!!!! 💪😉 PS: I did a mod with a LTD E 256. I changed: Bridge ( an historic gibson) Mics ( EMG 81/85), Plate (GIbson) and tuners ( gotoh magnum)
I watched the 4 parts of this project and i have to say very well done buddy! What made me search this Ibanez RG because today i got it as a 2ndhand & paid 20 euro!! It's damn good deal!
Dude, I love it. I put together a headless diy kit and I also had a little trouble with the clear. Great job tho! I'd get it from you if I wasn't in the states lol. Have a great day dude.
The reason for that sound when the selector switch is in the middle position is that you have both the pickups in series and that increases the DC resistance (on already pretty high output pickups which have a pretty high DC resistance themselves). Put some more gain on it and you have something that's probably a lot more powerful (or edgier?) than Seymour Duncan Invaders. I did the same on my guitar, and the middle position, which is underutilized by many guitarist, has become my go to selection for riffs to sound less muddy.
That sound at 12:35 where your switch is middle position is PHASED. That means you wired one pickup with its wires reversed, so when both pickups are on they are out of phase. That thin, tinkly, phase-ey sound is exactly what you get. You can "tune" it, by adjusting pickup heights relative to each other.
Titans are killer! Have them in my Lespaul and ltd sctb 7 string. Good choice👍🏽 if you want to try another dimarzio then go with mark mortons Dominion. More articulate and more mids than the titan with a little less output. Its a rhythm monster
Capricious guitar, I installed SD Black Winter on it, a lot of tops and middles and you can’t hear the bottom, I installed SD Blackouts dirty rumbling bottom, I installed Fishman Modern, very good sound, something between 81 and blackout, at the moment there are SD blackouts EMTY, the sound is perfect for me , I don't experiment anymore.
Just found your channel and watched every one of these modding videos and man you killed it with the editing and the project itself. Congratulations on that Ibanez it looks and sounds awesome. I'm looking forward to your next uploads (: Also enjoying your reviews, I'm so glad I found your channel.
Good job! Although, I think you need a Fiji green guitar also... :-) ...and yes, the pickus sound out of phase. Are they mounted in the same direction? If they are, it probably is a wiring mistake :-)
I have an old RG120 that I want to mod, but it’ll be even more extensive. Replacing the crummy bridge with a Floyd, replacing the next with a leftover ‘88 Charvel that’s already satin finished with good fretwork, and a pair of JBs. Maybe going for a sort of cornflower or bayside blue?
@@toemasmeems I mean, it’s a cheap Ibanez. The neck is flat and wide, the body is decent, you can drop in a better bridge and pickups for a couple hundred, BUT there isn’t enough space behind the nut for a locker, so you either have to modify it or replace it, if you want double locking.
Hi soul if that’s your first paint job I would say pretty good....Yellow and Black for me. Are not easy yellow tends to shadow and black goes the same....next time do 650 800 1000 3000 then do your 3 compounds of meguiiars and then some glass wax and your finish will be amazing..

Man, you did a really good job on that! I have a black RG2EX1, pretty similar to this guitar. Hey, you asked for ideas, a nice project would be removing the paint and letting the natural finish, see what you think... Cheers!
do another project Ibanez like this one but put a Hipshot bridge on it and Seymour Duncans like A custom Custom and a 59 or pearly gates. Some push/pull pots(or those new push/push) would be nice. I'm not much of a Painter, but I do love taking my guitars apart and putting them back together. I look forward to seeing your next project!
Dude i loved this project, i watched all the videos from the beggining till the end, you can do more of this content, is quality content, i really like your channel, keep it up!! I would love to buy that ibanez but im in South America :(
Hello there :) i have a question about mounting pickups directly into the body. How you've made it? I'm curious about it because of repainting my cheap GRG170DX :) I'm unfortunately stuck in finishing the work because of pickup mounting. Greets :)
Nice I’ve been thinking it’s time to either upgrade my Ibanez GIO or get a better guitar and wanna see what it will be capable of with just some new pickups and tuners
I am amazed, especially with the neck result. I am sure it feels great and i am going to do it to my Ibanez RG as well. Can you describe briefly how you did the neck... did you sand it after each coat of tung oil and what sandpaper grit do you suggest ?
Thanks for the new video, as always cool, I watch all your videos. You have a very cool channel, I hope you will not abandon the channel and will make a new video. Thanks for the efforts .
The yellow guitar looks very good and badass what picups did you use? ı am thinking to buy rg421 or rgrt421 for modding and my first job get these pickups they are very good
I got that same guitar and was thinking changing the bridge and the pickups. So i would like to know if it's possible to change that bridge to hipshot and how big of a project that would be? I mean if the screw holes are in same place and if so, does the hipshot hide the existing holes under it? And if u wouldn't mind, could u actually do a video where u change hipshot bridge to this guitar so i can see how that process goes. Nice videos by the way.
I know this is old, but for anyone watching simply sanding the paint more won't cut it (put intended). The process takes a little bit more effort to get perfect. Always spray in light even passes. Build up paint little by little until the coat is finished. Always sand in a new direction with each new grit. Always thoroughly clean with a tack cloth after sanding. 1. Sand old paint with 220 grit. 2. Spray primer, sand the primer to 320 grit. 3. Spray primer again, sand 2nd coat primer with 400 grit. 4. Spray color, sand the color to 600 grit. 5. Spray color coat 2, sand to 800 grit. 6. Spray clear, sand to 1000 grit, 7. Spray clear coat 2, sand 1500, 2000, 3000, then buff with an automotive polish. Skipping out on the clear coat will cause issues down the line because paint just isn't durable enough. It's also what gives that shine that everyone wants. Two coats of each is really the bare minimum needed to get great results. Most guitar companies will use quite a bit more than that.
I know this is an old video and you may not remember but When you changed the pickups to direct mount from ring mounted did you have to do anything specific to change it? Or did you find you could just screw then straight into the body? 😅 Great vid man
Looks great. I bought one RG 170 for $45 and putting some ebay pick ups, a cool pickguard, it doesn't have one, new knobs, might router room for a floyd rose, and a bit afraid of putting the locking nut. Not sure if I can do it. Any advice let me know. I love the neck it plays well.
nice. I have an American Strat but want to sound like Satriani. Seriously. What is minimum Ibanez model you think is worth the time to do this? Besides Dimarzio "fred" pups what would you recommend for pups to get that clear high gain Satriani tone?
They were decent indeed! The difference is honestly not that massive considering the Titans were the most expensive upgrade. Still happy with the overall improvement of the guitar :)
very cool series, I enjoyed it and it IS obvious that you want to get rid of it, because you are not truly happy with the results, it was a great learning experience though. it sounds good as well the only thing I would do differently, I would use epoxy resin to reshape the dented edge(s), then sand the cured epoxy to perfection. these "car" / wood fillers are going to crack once you slam your guitar on the floor or something. I tend to fix everything with the epoxy nowadays. not the 5 minutes epoxy. the proper A/B 3:1 weight ratio sold in liters. mixing epoxy requires precision scale, even 1 gram off will make your epoxy into a gummy bear. you can also dye your epoxy resin, so it is not transparent. and it accepts the paint and even boiled linseed oils very well. it looks pretty much like wood. you can also repair the loose holes with the damaged threads by filling them with the epoxy, letting it cure for 48 hours. then the hole will be like brand new, and hold the screws extremely well. I know it sound destructive, but when repairing holes, make the bottom of the hole wider than the top. this way filled with epoxy, will never let that epoxy come out. it works on the same principle as the dovetail. once angled hole walls are filled with the epoxy, this epoxy will never ever loosen up and/or come out.
Hey you did a nice job. Yo state that you need to go up in sandpaper to 3000 grit or more. No that s not the answer. When you lay down a rattle can paint job the paint goes on in a very heavy mist. At the end of the color you need to water sand that finish before clear coating. If you have an HVLP sprayer you can do the whole finish before sanding. Also you need a drum buffer to get the sides. I used to teach woodworking. Experiment with Orange Shellac for tinting a neck. See UA-cam channel Sara-in-tune for a great auto finish that is a good tutorial for guitar finishing. Im an old Banez man,, NIce Job , sounds great too!
Hi ! Just subscribe to your chanel and damn I’m impressed by your content. Grâce à tes vidéos, je vais moi-même modifier ma vieille ibanez gio et la rendre superbe. Un énorme merci ! P.S Je me suis rendu compte que tu parles également français ? Cheers du Québec, Canada 🇨🇦
If your not liking the sound in the centre selection for the picks ups. Re wire the bridge pick up. So unsolder the red wire from the selector switch and the green wire witch you would have ground with the earth wire. Then solder the red wire to the ground and solder the green wire to the selector switch. Thus should solve your problem. If you like it keep it the way it is. :)
I have the same guitar and I was trying to find a video with the pickups changed out. Yours sounds killer and the yellow looks pretty bitchen. Of course I watched all four of your damn videos to get to the end of this one. Typical wormhole! Lol
The pickups sound like maybe one is backwards, i have a guitar that someone installed a new pickup in reversed and it sounds very similar to that. Maybe Thomann sent you two of the same position pickups? Id love to see more projects in the future!
Usually the wiring plays a big role. I have an X2N DiMarzio on an RG550 and didn't really know which direction to put it in. The techs told me, it doesn't matter!
Don't beat yourself up about the finish. You learn SO much on your first refinish project and it never turns out right on the first go, it's a learning curve. I always advise people thinking about a refin to buy a £30 squier and refin it. Make all your mistakes there.
Nice result for the first time ! You made me want to do the same thing I have an old Ibanez S series from 90' with a serious impact and welding problem, what took you the most time on this project ?
I didn't know I needed a yellow guitar until just now. That thing looks killer!
Hell yeah I like it too
So yellow looks actually really cool.
That yellow reversed headstock looks way better than i expected.
It sounds amazing.
Nice job dude.
Came for the mod, stayed for the epic playing. Great tone too
Maybe the pickups are out of phase, flip the active cables of the bridge and maybe it will solve the problem.
A Gary Moore Ibanez! The color even resembles the one on his LP. :D
@@Cthulhu_Awaken you mean Peter Green's LP
@@samuelashton8787 Yea. But Gary is way more popular and I thought somebody would wonder inside their heads who Peter is. :)

Alex Kaupp The paintjob is time consuming. Spray, wait, spray, etc...
Yes I imagine, this step is a bit scary at the same time, specially when you never did it hahaha
