I just didn't understand (even after watching the press conference) why he chose Rh5 over Be7. Be7 seems like a much more human way to attack the weak g5 pawn in comparison to Rh5, and even if white didn't have Ne2, black still loses the bishop after playing Rh5 (for 3 pawns), while Be7 outright saves the bishop on c2. I'm a terrible chess player that couldn't in a million years understand those positions without engine assistance or top commentary, so I'm in no position to be even slightly critical, but the thought process behind choosing Rh5 really puzzles me.
@@joaoramos7160Ding explained why he discarded Be7 in post game analysis. Ding essentially saw the entire engine line but didn't evaluate the final position like an engine. In the real game too, Gukesh still had to play a series of super precise moves which Ding had to foresee at Rh5.
@@sancharsharma what I don't understand is that the line Ding showed after Be7 could still be played by Gukesh if he wanted to go Rc1 instead of e4, and they would reach the exact same position but Ding's rook would be strangely placed on h5. So playing Rh5 doesn't exactly prevent the position after Rc1 Bf5 e4 Be6 exd5 Bxd5 Nxd5 cxd5 (I believe he showed these moves after Be7). So I don't see what Rh5 does that Be7 doesn't.

2 decisive games out of the first 3 is so great as a fan. Fabi is who I always root for, but I must admit the 2018 WCC was pretty boring to follow lol.
I thought it was entertaining. The greatest chess player of all time could not beat Fabi in even one classical game. That might be the most accurately played match by 2 players in chess history.
@@LoganNagolagreed, these last two WCC are very entertaining, even though they lose their credibility because you realize that at least one player if not both should not be there, in terms of strength
Ding's really unstable in both WCC matches. It's amazing, but necessary that he plays aggressive stuff and create chances for himself, as he knows he will give away lots of chances for his opponent as well, even in major openings like the Spanish or Queen's Gambit
if he wanted to play faster he should've just withdraw this damn bishop. leaving it in place required excessive calculation on each move. and frankly even with Ne2 missed, as he said, bishop down for 3 pawns is still risky and unnecessary.
Especially when you consider the only reason it was there in the first place was to put pressure on a pawn. Definitely not a worthy justification to leave your bishop in such a vulnerable position.
I am surprised that fabi saw the press conference and still says that ding overlooked e4 when he overlook Ne2 instead. He also saw the Be7 line but thought after Rd7 in the end, that white is better, which is not true. He simply misjudged, actually both did
Thank you so much for a great channel. As in most sports, games, competitions and in life generally, preparation is usually the difference between a good and bad result... In the post-game press conference Gukesh said that he had prepared to move 13, whereas Ding said that his "knowledge" ended at move 3. Thereafter, he had to work things out over the board... which he did incredibly well until move 18 (rh5). This game-losing blunder was the cost of the time pressure caused by 10 moves of human calculation versus incredible preparation (the best engines and seconds as well as burning lots of midnight oil). Hats off, then, to Gukesh's remarkable ability to absorb it all and then execute one of what must have been many dozens of contingency plans.
Interestingly, the 3 games average gives more accuracy to Ding so far. He really shouldn't stop believing in his chances, Gukesh isn't playing extrordinarily by any means. Neither is Ding, but this is a wide open match where anything can happen.

There is a decent chance Ding had/has long covid. If so, he may not ever recover to his pre-covid self. Do not underestimate how incredibly difficult it would be to play top level chess if you have brain fog and tire out easily.
Defending a Pawn that isn't attacked and allowing your Biship to be trapped really screams GM I mean World Champion level chess doesn't it? I wonder what the Vegas odds are that people who bet on chess also believe in the toothfairy?
I think it's downhill from here for Ding unfortunately. I think he is fragile mentally and he won on black and lost on white, given that Gukesh was understandably nervous and now that he's starting to play to his potential I think Ding's mental issues will make it worse for him going forward. I hope it will be close but I'm thinking unfortunately it won't be.
Ding won and lost with black. His white game was a draw. I think (and hope) that Ding is far from broken mentally. I thought the game in his match against Nepo where he froze broke him, and he went on to recover and win that match. Even when he's playing badly he's shown that he has nerves of steel and a champion's fighting spirit. I agree that things are looking good for Gukesh at this point but I'm hoping for a hard-fought match.
@xCupressocyparis In addition he's been taking much longer in the first part of the game. It's like he's under more pressure than his opponent. I would rather this was a close match. I'm just observing the signs.
