    I mentioned I wanted to start tailoring at lunch at work and one of my mates gave me her machine. Used and free is the BEST.

    I bought a cheap brother sewing machine at a Walmart Black Friday sale years ago and only started using it after watching these videos.
    The way it’s explained was so simplistic and made me feel I could do it and now I can.

    Glad to see your vid popping up on my feed, Big D! Have been following since almost your start.. but working on losing some weight over the last 6 months... 8 months or so. I think I'm almost happy / ready to start tailoring, and it's all thanks to you, brother! Just want to say I appreciate you and what you're doing here, you're helping to change people's lives

    I remember asking for a tutorial a while back on how to slim pants without having it bunch up/bulge in the crotch area, well I figured out it's not possible on most pants because of the zipper. The zipper length is long on non slim pants and slim ones have a special short zipper, anyway just wanted to post my realization if anyone else was having the same problem, look at the zipper size to see how much you can or can't slim them!

    My first one was a brother cs6000i. It was a beast of a beginner machine. Automatic button holes are chef's kiss! Also, it is something you can grow with.

      That's what it comes down to, having something that you can grow with!

    This was PERFECT!!!! Exactly what I wanted & needed to learn! I randomly decided to make my outfit for The Little Mermaid premier. I bought a skirt, didn’t turn out colorwise how it appeared in the pics so I decided either I could make it or get it made. And let’s just say by the time I bought the fabric I decided the cost to get it made would just exceed what buying a sewing machine could do for me in the long run. Plus! I wanted to tailor a lot of my own clothes, so buying a sewing machine (which I’ve always wanted anyway) it was!!🤌🏾🙌🏾

    Thank for inspiring me to have a go have done several alterations that went well ,but I'm struggling with stretch denim hoping you got some ideas

    • @StylishDTailors
      @StylishDTailors  2 роки тому

      Stretch denim is the same as regular denim, however the measurements will differ to compensate for the stretchiness. What are you struggling with exactly?

    • @daleo150
      @daleo150 2 роки тому

      Stitching seems loose and keeps bunching up underneath, tried with a needle for stretch fabric, i have ordered a needle for denim to try again, also had trouble trying to fold hem as so stretchy kept springing back unfolded ,many thanks for any idea's

    I bought a basic mechanical sewing machine on Amazon to do only two things: 1. Original hems on jeans 2. Taper jeans. Being 5' 6", you're constantly paying extra for alterations because most jean inseams stop at 30 inches, and unfortunately, I'm 27 inches. I've saved so much money by learning how to hem and taper used jeans from thrift stores!

    One more thing about a second-hand machine is that it will probably need a service. And if it was for sale because someone upgraded, it might actually be worn out!
    I got a second-hand Janome and the stretch-stitch mechanism would slip. When I got it serviced, the tech said the piece that made it move backwards a step in the cycle was worn and couldn't be repaired. So I avoided using stretch stitches until I'd had enough and bought a new Husqvarna.

    dont buy one with a lot of problems if you arent confident you can fix it.
    i bought one that needed a lot of work done.
    spent days on it fixing problems every couple hours i fixed something else.
    at some point i was able to sew a single pay of pants and then it started acting up again.
    so im planning on buying a used on that works properly and then selling the one i got, and hope i dont lose any money on it since it works way better then it did before i got it.

    *SIMPLE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS* Buy an ALL METAL Singer sewing machine from the 1950's to the early 1980's with straight and Zig Zag
    Have it serviced. Use it for the rest of your life, you will never need to upgrade it, fancy stitches - no one uses them, and unlike modern plastic machines, it WILL sew 7 layers of denim...

    Lets be hounest here , how many decorative stitches do people really use ? Just saying i see all these machines with all the fancy stitching and never see people wearing or useing them , so why buy it ? Just get a vintage singer that will last for ever , sew threw more then any new machine and most of all cost 10 times less , hey you like plastic ? thats fine you can TELL your kids one day about the machine you used to have , or you can show them with the vintage Singer or any vintage machine you STILL own ...lets be hounest 99.5 % of the time we only use strait stitch ....be hounest to your self first when looking for a machine , what stitch am i going to be doing most of the time , hmmm seems we dont need all the extra styles ......
