Termal paste is very much required for any repairs on the G4. The upper part of the housing is part of the heatsink and it's connected to the bottom with paste.
This helped me open an old iMac G4. Thanks. By the archeological effort I had to put in to remove the dust, this wasn't opened by anyone before. Here's the thing: the hard drive has this slick paper glued onto it: it wraps around from left side (over screws), over the top, to the right side (over screws). It covers the whole top of the drive. I imagine this is because it sits rights under the fan, which blows all that dust in, but why would they be worried about that? Or was it a warranty thing? This drive doesn't have one of those "do not cover" holes on it, but if it did, covering it with slick paper wouldn't have helped either way.
I have the osx snow leopard install disk but the disk drive seems to want to throw it up everytime I put it in, does this mean I should replace that as well? And putting a new hard drive in will erase all previous data, correct? Im locked out of all privileges and want to put my own account on the computer. And are these worth upgrading nowadays? I'd like to be able to use it for simple tasks and possibly very simple games.
I have a Microsoft surface pro 6 and it is stuck at 0 percent while it charges and when unplugged from the charger it turns off I tried everything to fix it but nothing works I think it needs a battery replacement. how much would that cost?
@@noahfriedman9269 do you know what is the name of the port inside the mac for bluetooth? I notice that outside end connecting to card is MHF type I. the inside looks like SMS but I am not sure.

The thermal past is required whenever you crack one of these open as there is a connection between the bottom heat sink and the top.

If I have a working G3 Tower using OS9 can I clone that HD to this iMac G4 after replacing HD?

You can copy the install disk to a usb drive. And games and sites will probably mostly not work anymore.

The older g4s are not Bluetooth compatible. The newer ones don't have it preinstalled but you can buy the antenna and it'll work
