We have a live Q&A and hangout over in the DivKid Discord community happening with Jose from Vostok Instruments on Sunday the 1st of September at 8pm UK/BST. Support on patreon.com/divkid for access.
Watched the video yesterday, ordered the module today from Schneider, I'll pick it up tomorrow! I happened to be visiting a friend in Berlin. I'm looking forward to it!
I bet that would pair really well with the Pittsburgh Modular primary oscillator for complex tones. Straight sine out into a one mixer channel to keep the fundamental intact and then 4 of the more complex shapes blended in via Trace. Can't wait to get one!
This is great! I have patched something with this functionality several times now because I love to 'morph' sounds. This module seems tailor-made for me. Thank you!
Thank you, I really like that patch too. Gets even more fun with different oscillators too. I'll have a follow up video doing that sort of thing in the future.
Size is right. So useful. Can be a sequential switch. A simple crossfade. A mega fade. I mean what’s not to like. This and manic take the oscillators to 11
Nice one. One of my favorite and most utilized modules is the Doepfer 138e guad 3 way crossfader. Always thought it would be cool to cv the pan on that. There it is! Another helpful utility.
I’ve been saying eurorack needs more scanners - the fader makes it extra I wanted a 2x 4 channel so I’m glad you didn’t overdo it with a 8 channel scanner and so can grab x2 of these for stere-o-o ⚡️
Not available @ Schneidersladen in Germany, at the mo´, but managed to get one at Midi Amsterdam. Gdstuff! (Hope it arrives before Thursday - going down to my studio in Austria for a week to get away from it all). Cheers Ben! Good on yer!
I bought 2 immediately! The possibilities look really exciting. I use a shifty for hocketing, but interpolation is really going to change up what I can do with CV. I'm also looking forward to using it with ambient acoustic samples.
it's out now (yesterday) in lots of stores. A list of stores around the world is on my website at divkidvideo.com/trace/ if there's a store you like to use not listed ask them to get some in stock for you.
I was so happy when you patched the sine wave into the scan input! Also wow I've been casually eyeing that Vostok filter for a while. This is my first time hearing it and it sounds amazing. Patch Idea: Multi the output of Trace into four different modules (filters? delays? granular? fx? a swarm of oscillators?) and then route the outputs of those modules back into themselves for some scanning feedback chaos! Bonus points for using multiple Traces. c:::
Definitely have a look at Atlas, Jose did a fantastic job with it - ua-cam.com/video/kUtTe_ETlp0/v-deo.html Ooooh mega spread feedback patching. That sounds great. I've been playing with splitting the output of Trace to scan CV. But much simpler than that suggestion.
Let's use Make Noise Telharmonic and Waldorf NW1 as Oscs! Did a wonderful patch with RxMx in this style. Or Grant Richters Waveform City plus other low-bit Wavetables in one patch... 🎉 Also pretty inspiring could be to use several of those Supersaw generators tuned to the same pitch, just to glare at their sonic differences!
I love that hihat example. Reminds me of "Harlequin - The Beauty And The Beast (Underworld Remix)" from the classic Eye-Q remix album "Touch Themes"! What you did here would be the next step. :-)
I enjoyed the idea of modulating at audio rate, will have to try that myself with the Doepfer A144 as well. For a future video, how about using a synced wavetable oscillator as CV source to scan through different waves of another oscillator. Then you would obviously modulate the wavetable osc as well. No idea if this leads to musically pleasing sounds 😀
Absolutely amazingly cool new module! I bet scanning through effects could be super fun, like have some reverb, some bit crushing, a delay, and another something, and have it morph between effects. I could get super lost with some patches with this thing! Well done!
Thank you! Appreciate it. Scanning through FX nearly made this video, but I wanted a shorter simpler announcement demo sort of thing. So that will be in a future video. It's great fun with distortion/tonal shaping FX stuff but also slowly shifting through ambiences with verbs/delays etc.
Not the most efficient oscillator idea, but apropos: four oscillators, let’s say sawtooth for fun, all tuned up but each by a different amount from the master oscillator, which they’re all hard sync’d to (see what I did there). Scan through them at audio rates to get some unusual hard sync harmonics.
sounds great! Efficient or not not sweeping through sync tone harmonic series stuff but scanning to different specific tunings/harmonics ... sounds great!
thanks, not sure really. I have a lot of module ideas across a lot of different module types. But I'm not actively designing a voice/system set of things.
You can make Frames scan through 4 inputs like this. However it's a different sort of idea working with keyframes (keyframes are found in video editing) that can do much more.
Found Sound ordered some and that stock shipped a while back, they should have it very soon if not already. Might be worth a quick message to check in with them.
Yeah the 144 morphing control is the same idea. There's a good few variations of that sort of thing around. Frames could be programmed to do this, Morph 4 too. Both of those can do much more, but bigger and more complicated.

Subway's great, especially the buttons to enable/disable inputs, but notably is digitally-controlled and cannot handle audio-rate scanning like this one can.
(Not to suggest that digital control necessarily makes audio-rate scanning impossible, but it lowers the rate and, in the case of Subway, it lowers it a bit too far to be useful. Still, it's a great module too, just for different use cases.)
it's out now in lots of stores globally. Rather than me copy all the links, divkidvideo.com/trace/ has the stores listed as you scroll down. Thank you.
There's lots of ways to approach the creation of sound and music and I think shape and overall gestural or feel is often the thing we're trying to get across. Everything else is a means of trying to get those ideas out.
I iike using scanners as a one knob FX send that i send to a delay or reverb, It helps the delay sound less muddy and convoluted if only a small amount of sounds can go into the delay at any one moment. Vs conversely having individual FX sends on each channel tends to make you want to send everything to the same delay a little bit at once, which i think just in a whole mix can sound muddy, so yeah a scanner to tastefully send only a bit to the delay is awesome
@@DivKid Just ordered a Trace of my own, to do this very thing. I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with, if it does make it to a future video.
@DivKid I love using the SSF ZPO in my WMD subway to do a 4 octave stack of the sub -2, ripsaw, morphing pulse/saw, and upsaw Taking all 3 morph outs and interpolating between them with trace or subway is also a really awesome way to get really unique crossfading wave morphing!

Nice. I like my WMD Subway which is 8 inputs, lets you turn off independent inputs and it scans through evenly. I might grab one of these for another case.
I like it a lot and I'll probably buy a couple. However I think an major opportunity was missed here in the quest for a tiny module - it would have been wonderful to have the four VCA control voltages available as outputs. I believe David Dixon's scanner had this feature. Would have been great to be able to process the four signals separately, eg. panning
As with all design it's distilling to what the idea is and what it isn't. Original ideas were pretty different and this is of course why lots of variations on the same things exist across the market place. Small, simple and affordable were big goals for this.
What would be cool would be the opposite 1 into 4 crossfader to distribute one sound to different effects/filters etc. Also - is this sth. like a smaller, simpler version of the Morph4 ?

great timing! Enjoy it and Berlin.
Pam's as a playable sequencer when run through Trace and a quantizer! Damn you're good!
Yeah that's a fun one, just clock divided squares even can be good fun.
Pams is a playable sequencer using cv ins with an offset as macro to several parameters though
I bet that would pair really well with the Pittsburgh Modular primary oscillator for complex tones.

A nice 4-channel version of WMD's Subway, which is an 8-channel cross-fading switch.
the WMD looks good, while this isn't a "version of" the WMD at all, they do share the same scanning principals as do some other things.
