  • I'm selling a TDS 784C on EBay but there are a lot of 'sellers' who will turn off error detection when they sell these TDS scopes. I wanted to show that I haven't done that so you can see a boot to boot, one shot take of what my TDS 784C looks like (well hopefully it will be someone else's TDS 784C shortly but still it provides a visual example of what a zero error self test should be).

    Cool, keep the vids coming. Really enjoy them. Love the Aussie accent too, makes a pleasant change to hear "solder" as it should be pronounced !

    Agilent sticker means they did a cal verification, but highly unlikely they did an actual calibration update to the instrument. It's always best to have full calibrations done by the manufacturer of the instrument.

    One more question, as I don't remember everything . I have two labs one is strictly particle physics and the other is mostly Zenneck Wave and energy transfer. *My last video* is about what I'm working on
    I still have the two of TDS654C and with more than 500 devices I don't remember what was the difference between them and your TDS784C if you happened to know it ? ( it is not so important just curiosity)
    I'm recently fighting with lack of power on SSD on SATA adapter, as I'm changing HD to SSD in Lecroy WaveRunner 64XI Have you ever got into this problem?

      Unfortunately, I'm not really a Tek guy so I'm not sure what the difference is either - Would need to search for it. I haven't swapped HD for SSD in my gear but it should just work if you have the right SATA adapter - Maybe it shows a full connector but doesn't actually deliver power? What I have done is to swap the HD for Compact Flash cards (see my DolchPac video) and they work really well.

      @@tgsoapbox Thank you , I did quickly run into 5 of your DolchPac video. I'll watch it tomorrow as it is late now in New York.
      Interesting approach with this Compact Flash Adapter .
      The idea with compact Flash Card is interesting

      I do have IDE to SATA adapter - so my problem was that SSD didn't get power from the adapter.
      I do appreciate your help.

      @@stivep1 Happy to help where I can - One benefit I got from the CF approach is that I can swap the cards for different OS setups without having to deal with boot managers etc - I don't think that'll be helpful in the case of an oscilloscope but certainly worth keeping in mind.

    Pretty good that you say you like the Infiniium better considering it's a much newer scope. To even compare an older Tek scope to it, speaks volumes to it's performance... (just don't look at the waveform update rate, you'll be bummed out about selling the Tek)

    • @tgsoapbox
      @tgsoapbox  6 років тому

      If you had to use a scope daily the Tek is clearly the way to go I think - However, in my use case I do prefer the Infiniium but it is a pain to use for regular measurements.

      A lot of the time it's about what user interface a user is accustomed to using. The first scope we learn to use, often becomes a favourite interface. Having worked for both HP and Tek, (as well as the R&S scopes) I know this first hand. I love them all for different reasons. Just like there's different probing approaches, what you're used to, only gets displaced when the other brand does something your favourite can't do.

      @@tgsoapbox Hi! Since I was suggested to consider buying an Infinium scope, could you give more details about your claim '' I do prefer the Infiniium but it is a pain to use for regular measurements''? Thank you very much

    • @tgsoapbox
      @tgsoapbox  Рік тому

      @@JYTRW Happy to - The Infiniium scope I have has a way more complex user experience to it than Tek scopes of that era - What I mean is that common things I find myself doing are actually in different locations in the UI where in the Tek scopes they tend to be in the same place. This means that for general, day-to-day use where you are exploring a signal the other scopes are easier to use (this includes more modern scopes from other manufacturers as well).
      But if you know what measurement you're taking then the HP scope I think does a better job of taking that measurement and letting you drill in for accuracy.
      To sum up, the scope I use day to day is actually a Rigol scope - I have 3 digital Tek scopes but I never really use them as I just don't like the experience. When it comes to critical measurements of a waveform I like to set it up on the HP one and take that.
      If you're doing analog stuff (and by that I mean XY work) then you can't beat an old Tek analog scope for it.
      Did that help?

      @@tgsoapbox Sure it helped and thank you for sharing. I own only a TEK (2465B, perfectly suitable with the analog stuff I'm fiddling with). But I think it has a small display and lacks of the measurements you can get from a digital one. The Infinium I was suggested to buy is a 54825A: interesting price, great machine but it takes around 100 s to boot up! Is it normal? I've to ponder again the whole question. Excuse me for this OT with respect to your very interesting video. Bye

    Great info mate. How much did you end up getting for this bad boy?

      Glad you enjoyed it - Unfortunately, it turned out that this unit displayed an intermittent fault so I ended up changing the auction for parts and got around a hundred for it (I think).

      @@tgsoapbox I'm sure it comes as no surprise, I've got a Tektronix oscilloscope torn down rn. A TDS 524A with that weird 'nucolor' gel garbling the crt display. My 1st try to fix =]

      @@aaronadams112 I've seen that gel issue before - I hear that you can clean it off with IPA and a little patience but I've never done that - Good luck with it.
