The biggest advantage of Chrome OS is that you know outright that every single bit of data about you is being collected, so you don't have to feel confused about what data they have on you, you just know that it's everything.

@@EmmanuelGoldsteinUKMicrosoft's recent moves have triggered a lot of people. Privacy aside, I cant even listen to a local MP3 file I have. It opens in groove music and groove music shows an ad for spotify. Those ads make my blood boil each second I use stupid windows 10. The slow "Photos app" which literally takes 2 minutes to preview a jpeg. The constant push to use onedrive and edge eventhough onedrive is buggy af. Can't imagine how horrible 11 will be. 11 is more spyware and crap with a better looking shell IMO. And by the time windows 10 goes out of support in 2025, I assume linux gaming would be much better with better proton and wine supporting windows games and vulkan being state of the art API for native games with all features being supported in linux. Sorry for the long rant. Have a good day!

Although the “fragmentation” and “hostile environment” are very real in the Linux world, I want to assure anyone interested in Linux that they are much less severe now. So many distros give everyone the option to try and choose according to her/his needs. And if you dig around a bit, you will find forums that are much friendlier and decorous than those of Windows or Mac.
Although the caveats of using Linux mentioned by Gary here are well-intentioned, he should’ve mentioned the caveats of Windows and Mac, too. Windows is notorious for its privacy violation and security issues, and Mac suffers from unnecessarily set price tags and unnecessarily closed computing environments.

At times with some arch users you can be unlucky, but most New users don't start with arch, so that's not a problem

I have a history of "slower" machines using Windows 10. One time I bought a $300 3in1 laptop/netbook and it was suffering hell under Windows 10. 32 GB disc space couldn't handle constant updates, browsing just 2 tabs put a strain on CPU, I dare you to open MS Word. So I obliterated Windows 10, installed Linux Mint... it's not that it now runs faster, it's basically a useful machine now. And it wasn't. And the best part: with scripts available online I managed to re-create the 3in1 functionality: disable keyboard and touchpad when the device is folded, rotate the screen 90 degrees, open on-screen keyboard - all this without any programming knowledge, just straight up copy+paste scripts.

Windows 11 should use a DirectX HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) & HEL (hardware emulation layer) which could encapsulate ALL your multiple CPU cores (whether you have just 2 cores or as many as 64 cores) into a single "black box" interface, so when games make CPU calculation requests, it is instead passed to the CPU DirectX HAL/HEL black box, which breaks up the task and spreads it efficiently across ALL the cores and threads. This way, even though computer games programmers only currently optimise their games to make FULL use of 4 to 6 cores in most games, windows DirectX could act as an interim step which makes the game THINK you just have one AMAZINGLY fast CPU core, with windows 11 DirectX HAL/HEL creating that illusion. The net effect would be that ANY game doesn't need to be rewritten, it just pasts CPU calculation to this DirectX HAL/HEL black box interface, and then gets its answer back incredibly quickly from the other end of that same black box, without the game programmers needing to know how it did it. And this will FINALLY mean that PC owners get the FULL power of EVERY CPU core being used, with this DirectX HAL/HEL making it appear it is only dealing with an incredibly powerful single core, and removing complications like multithreading. My Masters degree was looking at DirectX (with HAL and HEL) and how it could be used in VR, so I KNOW this is possible, and it would make a HUGE improvement for gamers with CPUs that have lots of cores. :)

Actually running Win11 will be a real alternative to Win11.. TPM-free Win11 sold in China will eventually find its way to torrent sites. I'd assume since there will be official TPM-free version, there will be fallback code for lack of security features in all versions of Win11 kernel.. Someone will just patch the installer, remove these requirements and they won't matter. You can still run the latest version of Win10 on socket 478 Pentium 4s (without NXbit support) by patching the installer.

I think Linux won't probably be 1st spot:
Lack of programs, drivers, and games compatibility (95% people use Adobe, MS Office, Windows Games and they're used to use these programs, they don't use Open Source alternative like that and it'll feel uncomfortable for them).
Most people don't even know how to use a computer other than opening MS Edge and Google Chrome so Linux will be nightmares for them.
95% of them learned to use Windows when they're young so they're used to use Windows, Linux will feel uncomfortable for them.
Linux has too many distributions and it's not a single OS, regular people will be so confused even I was back then. Windows is Windows, MacOS is MacOS, ChromeOS is ChromeOS but Linux isn't.
Even people with most technical at computer don't even know what Linux is.
ChromeOS / Chromebooks now seems to be more dominating than Linux and MacOS due to how cheap and easy it is thanks to COVID-19 pandadamic, someday developers will port Windows programs to ChromeOS. ChromeOS is popular in school and learning.

Have heard people say something broke their distribution, didn't happen to me, shouldn't happen unless you're doing something crazy which everyone has warned against.
Also there's an awesome repository of community built packages called aur, this means almost all softwares that you had to build using cmake is just one click away with very small chances of failure.

Gary "... but don't buy a macbook with an x86 processor". Actually I did a few months ago, for the reason that one software application I use for work only runs on Windows, and its licensing is very restricted on a VM, so I was planning on using Bootcamp on the Mac. (In the end, I used my existing Windows laptop and did remote desktop from my Mac to the Windows laptop).
But this leads to, any idea if Windows 11 can be installed as a dual boot; and if Windows 11 can be run as a guest OS in a VM?

But I thought that the Arm version of Windows sucked. And the application I use isn't ported to Arm anyway.
P.S. One of the first computers I used was a VAX 11/780 at the company my father worked for and I wanted to work for DEC. Never made it though, although in the 1990s I got to work using MicroVAXs, VAX Alphas and even DEC PCs

@AstroCat Hey that is true, it doesn't (and will not be) retired. I more mean that if I want to use Windows 11 I will have to retire it even though it is perfectly useful still. Before when Windows 10 was introduced that was the only way to get DX12 as Windows 7 didn't support it. But that was no problem as I could easily install Windows 10 without a hardware change. Now if I want to use Auto-HDR and DirectStorage I need to go over to Windows 11, but I can't bring my current, perfectly good hardware. So it feels like if I want these features then I am being forced into a hardware upgrade that I don't actually need for these features.

Gary, hello from another DECite. You probably know by now, but in-case you don't, it is possible to install Win 11 on any PC hardware that supports Win 10. There are videos on other platforms that show the only limitation and restriction occurs during the installation phase which can be bypassed allowing the installation to continue. This so called security requirement (TPM) can also be dis-proven on a fully supported Win 11 PC by checking the TMP status after install. TheTMP manager will indicate you have a TPM but will also indicate whether it is in use or not. In other words it is still a user decision to use TPM or not. So why enforce a requirement if it's use is optional?

Now I administer a company office with 65 PC's that are all 4th to 6th generation intel i5's, with SSD's and 16GB of RAM on all of them. For the time being none of the 65PC's is capable to update to Windows 11. The company will stick for the time to Windows 10 but I'm mostly worried what's going to happen after 2025 in regards of security. Sure the company may upgrade some of the 4th Gen PC's to newer ones, but under no reason I can't see them deciding to replace 65 fully functional and working PC's in the next 4 years. And just to be fare with them, I wouldn't either. It's not a multinational big company we're talking about. It's a middle class company that it's annual clear profit after taxes would merely be sufficient to replace all the computers at once. In other words, Microsoft asks from a middle class company to either loose a quarter of it's clear profits each year for the next 4 years, or take it's risks with security issues after 2025. Well done!

MacOS is not a good replacement for Windows 11, as it's just more of the same. Apple has for years made older hardware redundant with the release of newer versions of MacOS, routinely forcing users to upgrade their entire computers. Anyone who goes down this route would just be stuck in the same rut, long-term, but with a less familiar and less functional system. You also don't need Windows 11 to be able to run Android apps, as there's already multiple options for running Android apps in Windows... not natively, granted, but fairly easily for anyone familiar with emulation or virtualization.

I would love to switch to Linux, but I've experienced more "hiccups" in Linux than I ever have in Windows. When the installation fails then it doesn’t inspire confidence in the system and hardware compatibility does cause issues, some never addressed. Yes the community in Linux is second to none and there’s often a workaround if you’re willing to get your hands dirty in terminal, but that’s more effort than your average user is going to enjoy.
On paper, Linux is the operating system of choice for me. It can be installed as a minimal OS without the kind of bloat that comes with Windows. You can choose whatever UI floats your boat and pretty much customise it so that it’s perfection (well in your eyes anyway). Hell, you can even install tools of your choice…no more Bing integration.
As Gary says, the biggest problem is its diversity, which is perhaps great for the geeks but a headache for others. I understand that choice (which is generally a good thing) has given rise to every aspect of the system being taken in every direction, but this has split the user-base and means that while one kernel or distro offers you what you need today it may be lacking in what you need tomorrow. Yes you can swap distros but perhaps you already use a feature that you are using that is not available in the destination environment.
I just wish that Microsoft would make the base Windows OS (not the ecosystem it has become) available for free without any caveats or unnecessary requirements. They could then charge an amount for all of the parts of the “ecosystem” you want to buy into. Of course, while distributing the minimal OS for free would get it on many more PCs, very few people would actually want to buy into the ecosystem and utilities that are forced onto the user in the current Windows environment bundle…you know the ones that tie you into other Microsoft hardware, software or Bing!
Come on Linux, get together and support some common developments that will tip the balance come 2025.

Try some distro with lots of support for the latest stuff, like Manjaro. You should have a better experience and it has a hardware manager that helps you with drivers for closed-source devices.

@@EricchiYukia Thanks for the suggestion, but Manjaro was one of the ones that struggled to install and when I finally did it was very unstable. Linux Mint has always been the best of my experiences. Unfortunately they dropped their KDE release and others, including KDE Neon, were just not reliable on my hardware. Some of the others (apart from Mint) that deserve a mention are Solus Budgie, Ubuntu (and its other flavours), Zorin OS and Deepin (fab, just concerned about its origin). Linux is almost there and surpasses Windows in many ways, but its diversity is both its crown and its ball & chain. Again, thanks for the suggestion, it may just help someone else having issues.

I have used several desktop on Linux desktops on Linux. It's not that hard to learn. But I have used computers from Vax VMS, RSX-11 on PDP-11 and IBM mainframes in a banking environment. Also used GEOS and the Amiga Workbench. Its really not that hard and their are plenty of tutorials on You Tube and elsewhere. Not bragging just been around a while. It takes some effort but its worth it if you really want learn computers and not just Microsoft.

ubuntu kylin is about the best Win 10 UI copy I've ever seen. It uses the UKUI desktop which can be installed on other distros as well. Still needs to have a fully English version (a few things are Chinese only, e.g., the weather plug, software center, and the Calendar appears bilingual). It's stunningly beautiful actually. For someone transitioning to Linux, it's pretty difficult NOT to just know how to use it from the get go.

Yeah, Linux biggest problem is that there’s not much of a common ground besides the core. If one package could be installed on all distributions without changes it would mean a lot for the adoption of Linux.

I'm not a big Apple person. Bur, I do have to give them one thing. They do support their products for an extremely long time compared to everyone else. I have, I think, a second gen Apple Mini and an iPad Mini 2. The iPad's support finally ended just within the last year or so. I have lots of Android devices around thst haven't had updates since I can't remember when. Fortunately, none have ever needed service. If they weren't such jerks about spare parts and service I wouldn't buy anything else. Too bad.

Still, you can make a custom Chromebook or "ChromePC", you can bypass Windows 11 installation and probably other fans will create another ways to bypass it, even MacOS has it's way with Hackintosh.
Linux have many alternatives to Adobe too, and that's not a Linux problem, it's Adobe and totally Adobe the problem.

Personally I have Win 10 so I can run all my games library. I use a Linux distro for some Linux native games, ( massive thanks to the devs who support Linux ), and literally everything else. Sadly, if you're a PC gamer then alternatives like Chrome OS, Mac etc aren't even a viable option. When it comes to gaming Microsoft has everyone by the short and curlies and they know it.

I use Kubuntu 20.04 with a KDE Plasma desktop its just like a Windows machine in terms its interface. I started to use it after Windows crapped out on me, for the last time, I vowed! I have used Microshaft since DOS 6.22 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in 1995 and don't miss it at all. I moved to open source programs whilst still on Windows, Firefox, Filezilla, Thunderbird, Open Office, Netbeans and VLC and those programs run identically on Linux so not much has changed for me.

    Love it!!! :-S
"Don't get Windows 11 because they have made an arbitrary line in the sand on the hardware that they support!"
    Get these alternatives instead:
MacOS - Same arbitrary lines in the sand and have been doing that for ever.
Chrome OS - No Google supported version that can be installed on 3rd party hardware with out hacking it (technical ability).
Linux - Sure you can use this as an alternative but only really recommended for those that have a bit of technical ability if you want to do anything else apart from email and browse.
If you have the technical ability then you can probably hack Windows 11 installer to run on unsupported hardware, if you don't then you have to go buy a new PC, just like you would for an Apple device or a Google (android) device. I don't quite understand the diatribe?
All the alternatives have their merits, as does Microsoft Windows.
Not too sure I'll be taking my advice on the qualities of Windows 11 from a tech reporter (may be a little too kind?) that mostly wears an Android tee in his vids.
    Rant out...

Looks like MS wants to take a back seat to Google as most people are already familiar with the OS due to all the mobile devices it's currently running on.
Mac OS doesn't count as they require you to upgrade hardware as soon as anything goes wrong with your mac. Apple doesn't repair they replace at full price or you can buy this new computer.
