Norstar Modular ICS I was able to connect a PSTN line on the patch panel that labeled "TRUNK" (1 pair) when i dial the school the system rings and i get their old voice mail, i can each Extensions and the system transfers it. However on the Extensions when I dial 9 i can not call out, just silence, any tips?
I know buddy. I want to get Part 3 done too. I moved shortly after I finished part 2. So, I've had some challenges getting the new lab setup to a point where I can do that.
You were 100% right about the paging contact closure -- you're just missing it because its pins 40 and 15 and is off the top of this page. Look up at 19:45
This is super awesome stuff. Thank you for all your videos Steve. Im thinking about deploying an old norstar MICS I inherited. Did you ever make part 3 that shows some setup / programming? Thanks.
+Hardware Failure . Hey thanks! So, what happened was I moved shortly after I made "part 2". I moved from Connecticut to Florida. It's taking me some time to get back up to speed. I just got my lab setup again. So, yes I will get to part 3 at some point. Yes, definitely install that MICS. They're awesome.
Thanks, Steve! That's good old fashioned telephone stuff; I love it! VoIP is ruining the world. I believe in a power down situation, ET1 connects to CO Line 2 and ET2 connects to CO Line 26.
Exactly how is VoIP ruining the world? That's what's known as progress. I have nothing against this old fashioned telephone stuff, and I find it very interesting, cool and still very relevant (actually I kind of love it honestly) but it is just silly to say something like VoIP is ruining the world. You're essentially saying "hey, don't try to make improvements to things, just stop all progress"....I mean, think about what you're saying. If everybody had that mindset, we'd be stuck in the 90s, or the 80's or the 50's or 20's or whatever era that everyone just decided that new technologies are ruining the world....come on man....that's just silly what you said.
I believe that the black/slate pair on the second station cable is for paging audio signal and the yellow blue is the contact just for paging. I have the MICS 0x32 which I got for free along with about 22 to 25 phones. But here's the thing, when I do a page all feature 630 or 62 I hear a click in the main cabinet. Is that normal, There was a youtube channel where a bcm did the same thing. and he said it was a relay in the system doing that. Since I dont have an actual paging amplifier to test this with I jerry-rigged an rca cable to the black slate pair and it works. Its plugged into a regular sound system.
Very informative videos. I'm trying to set up a Norstar Plus MICS. Pretty basic system so far just the system itself a 66 block and a couple test phones. I'm to the point where I'm trying to wire the phones, and I'm not using any kind of jack, I'm just running two wires into the 66 block, but no matter which two wires I use I still have a dead line on the phone. Am I missing something that will be in Part 3?
Do you have a video that shows a bix block. Where is part 3? If you connect a phone wire to extension 226 (for example), do you still need to program the phone or will it automatically ring when you dial intercom 226. Can Nortel T7208 (beige) be plug directly to regular analog line?
If you want to see what extension that new 7208 is, do a "Feature * 0" then press the Intercom key. that should tell you. No, def cannot plug into an analog line. It's proprietary technology that only works with the Nortel Norstar line of phone systems.
Just to confirm, at abour10:30 min mark, you mentioned that every pair of wire represent a station, eg extension 221,222,223. So if I attach a phone to pair 3, does it get extension 223? I do not need to program or assign the extension223 to the phone. What is the output voltage of the Nortel lines, will it damage a regular analog device (eg. fax) if you plug it accidentally to a jack used by a Nortel phone? Can you also put the links in the description you have mentioned in the video?
How do the line numbers continue when using trunk expansion modules? I noticed in the line programming that it goes from line 28 to line 49. Would this mean that line 49 would be the white blue pair etc. on the 25 pair coming from the expansion module?
Cassandra, they don't usually beep continously. Is it possible you have a UPS (Uninterruptible power supply aka: Battery Back) that maybe making that noise? It's possible the Voice mail unit didn't come back online correctly. Or, doesn't have power at all. The Voicemail is sometimes a separate little grey box.
I love that punch tool u have. that exact color and model. It cuts well. I have had it for 10 years and got it used. #lightblueandyellow Awesome video!
thank you. Yeah, that little punch tool has been around! I've had that for about 15 years. I'ts been dropped so many times that it finally cracked about a year ago. So, I super-glued back together and continued on.
You said that you posted a link that explains how to punch everything down on a 66 block instead of a 110. Can you point me in the right direction for this link?
I've been meaning to purchase and install one of these phone systems for my home office, and further down the road the rest of my house, would you recommend a 616 or 824?
@@thenortelguy I'd really appreciate it. We are kinda numb to these kinda things. I knew a lot because I've been studying this stuff off and on for years, but got stumped on a few things. We only have one issue now which is getting the correct type of correct disa card
Hi Nortel Guy, We have the Nortel M7310 and are using 5 phones in our office. How can I tell if the Caller Id is programmed? When I call our phone company they say that we have it, but I cant seem to find the steps in the manual on how to tell if its available and how to turn on in the phone systems???? Help
+sandie s caller ID is tricky. First it helps to know which type of Nortel system you have (bcm 50, cics, mics 0x32). You van go to the nortel guy website www.nortelguy.com and click the menu option for identify system. There are pics there to help you figure it out. BCMs come equiped for CID out of the box while other system do not. Let me know and I will see if I can help you.
ok good... so those would require Caller ID enabled trunk card(s). (as opposed to regular non-cid trunk card(s). These are the long, 1" wide, grey modular cards that fit into the CICS module. Each card handles 4 lines. Usually, if the card is "Caller ID enabled" it will have a CI or CID on it.
Igancio, yes, there is that possibility. The internal backup battery that maintains the programming data between power outages may have weakened or may even be dead. If you must disconnect the power, do it for as short a time as possible!
Hi Steve, this videos are very interesting. I'm excited to see the part 3 of it as promised. If I will do the wiring on jacks, why would I need two pairs (White Blue and White orange)? Where would I terminate it on bix? Thanks in advance : )
hi Edwin, I know I really need to make that 3rd video. Unfortuneatly, Nortel guy is not my F/T gig. I can tell you that for each phone, you only need 1 pair. those will terminate on pins that begin out of that top amphenol connector (port 101, port 102, etc...)
is there any way you can help me a new phone number was installed by att but they didn't know how to send get the new number to work on sysyem or phones
Hey I am looking into getting a Nortel 0x32 for the Fire Department I work for, where can I get one cheap. We are a Volunteer department so we can't afford anything fancy.
+ARSx TheLegend yes, unfortunately it's a very wire-intensive endeavor. If you want a nice phone system, but without all the wire, consider a cloud VoIP system like 8x8 or callcentric. The phones just plug into the network and there is no PBX to manage.
I installed many of these systems in my telephone career. Long retired now. The video brings it all back!

Excellent introductory explanation. I am willing to pay to learn about legacy systems like this.
These old systems were amazingly reliable. 😎
Steve’s facial expressions while explaining male and female amphenol connectors is too funny
Ha! Ive not watched this video in years. Now you got me interested!! 😁
just finished part 1 and taking notes this is really cool stuff thanks !!!!

Eric Browning Ok I figured it out, it was just a wiring issue. I'm patiently waiting for part 3 now :)
Great video. Some info, the thing you call the dental floss is known as a "rip cord".
And with good reason
Digital telephones ring twice for intercom calls. Is the signal “on off on off” or does the signal weaken and strengthen?
Do you have a video that shows a bix block. Where is part 3?

hey mike how do you restrict calls going out on a norsta pbx so that anyone making a call has to dial a code to get a call out
I've been meaning to purchase and install one of these phone systems for my home office, and further down the road the rest of my house, would you recommend a 616 or 824?
Mike, I would definetly go with the 6x16 unless you think you'll need more than 16 phone sets. the 6x16 is cheaper and simpler.
The Nortel Guy Okay thanks for the insight.
