I know that this is a bit behind from when u originally posted this, could u show us how u process photos? Sorry if it’s already been asked! Great video!
im going to try this. I like the idea of sharpening for output resolution. I often notice noisy ghosting edges from compressing sharpening especially in instagram. I wish lightroom would let you mask sharpening other than the simple slider. One really big problem with lightroom is to have the default masking slider all the way left. That is the worst place for it to be and there is a lot of noise in my early photos because of it.
This technique is more for web so works well on lower resolution images. I don't think it's overkill, but it does add extra work so up to you whether it's worth it.
..another quick question...when re sizing to 2048..is that ALL images or ones in landscape? ...and a portrait image would be different? Or is it the longer side is always 2048 regardless ? Cheers!
Thanks! There are two main types of NR in Lightroom - Colour NR is on by default, but I like to tone it down a bit to reduce colour bleed particularly on noisy images. Luminance NR I tend to avoid but I sometimes add a small amount in very noisy images. And yes I add it in Lightroom before exporting.
I haven't done much printing so I'm not really in a good position to say. I'd imagine it's the same thing except you'd do it on the full resolution file and might have to play with the high pass filter size a bit.
Rob Blight when you stopped your video in order to re-record it for purposes of making it more visible on UA-cam you lost me. It was no longer clear which actions were done specifically to make it "clearer on UA-cam" and which were integral to your tutorial. Clarification would be appreciated since I'd like to try this technique.
The technique is great, buuuuutt.... Am I the only one that sees this picture being brilliant as the original itself and that all these edits are unnecessary ? True there is noise, and just applying noise reduction in a layer and adding mask and bringing back the original details on the bird will do. But the rest of it ! :D it's like a skinny girl thinking she's fat... Haha this image is superb as it was, should have used another example to make the effects more visible. Half the time I found myself imagining the effects :D
Nicely explained! I was happy to discover that's more or less what I'm doing, BUT I haven't been pulling back the sharpening slider in RAW before I go into photoshop. Thank you!
Any other editing topics, tutorials or anything else you'd like me to cover? Let me know!
I captured a good photo can you help me with editing it.

Excellent, Very Helpful Rob, Have Used High Pass, Never As Layer With Brush Tool, Many Thanks For Sharing.
Thanks for explaining this sharpening process. It works very well on my bird images and is now part of my post processing flow.
Well done!
I usually don't comment on youtube video.. But this tutorial is Very helful ... Thank you..
Some great tips rob, Thank you. I'm gonna give that a try.

Great. My favourite method of sharpening as well.
Great tutorial Rob, really helpful, thanks for sharing...

Oh damn, I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing! Mandarin ducks are ridiculous haha, kinda like our Wood Ducks here in Canada.

Lightroom has the brush tool that you can use as a masking tool
Just discovered your You Tube channel, very impressed. I look forward to seeing where you take it.
I'm glad you like it and thanks for saying so!
Great tutorial! One question: Where is sharpening in your workflow? Is it before the lightroom(camera raw) edit or after?
Good stuff. I'm pretty horrible at Lightroom and PS post process right now. I need a lot of practice.
Great vid!!
Thanks for sharing.... Please upload similar video with different birds and different background
Hi there,
Where have you find Mandarin Duck in UK?
Thabk you!
Do you not think its overkill Rob unless the images are going to be blown up big time?
Helpful tutorial nonetheless. Thanks!

hi rob I take it when you put the layers in to groups this was just for the purpose of the video ?
Yes, but you can do the same thing if you want to pump up the effect even more. Usually one is enough for me.
Thanks!
Great video as always Rob! I assume you do the noise removal in either lightroom or Noisless CK first and then export to PS right?

@@RobBlight Thanks for the quick reply!
Most people starting their edit will not have such a sharp image! Wish it was more relatable haha.. but good flow!
Can I just confirm, do you double up on the Pass Through filter every time, or just to see the effect on your video? Cheers
Thanks Rob but what about sharpening for printing?

Link doesn't work!!! What to do?
Hello Rob, whats the name - type of your camera?
Incredible footage by the way keep it up!
Thanks! My main camera is a Nikon D850. There's a link in the description where you can see what cameras, lenses and other gear I use.
The technique is great, buuuuutt....

Very clever but WAY too complicated for my stupid brain 🤪
Oh man, look at all that noise at 2:1.....it’s disgusting!
Buy a mirrorless camera with IBIS, you don't need to sharpen.
