The "trick" isn't putting the bible down.
The "trick" is taking the time to read it starting with the premise that God is the Good Guy(TM) and to find yourself in its pages WITHOUT letting some other person or pastor to spoon-feed you "what it really means."
The "trick" is reading the bible...having only your own perspectives, experiences, and understandings to use to parse it...and then getting to the part where the Lord tells you NOT to lean on your own understanding...and then realizing that you have to reach out to Him with some *very* specific prayer, because unless He gives you some other spiritual understanding, you ONLY have your own understanding to lean on. ;)
But you cannot dismiss Scripture because it is from Scripture that we get the record of what the Lord wants us to do or not do.
When we ignore Scripture and God's words to us in its pages, we create systems that restrict or allow what God has neither restricted nor allowed.
We end up legalists shoving people back under the Law that cannot save us...or hedonists who slowly slip into antinomianism and even apostasy.
By all means, be a living example of someone conforming himself to Christ...but be *very* cautious about dropping our only static record of Who Christ was and how He taught us to behave.
